Carla Johnson works exclusively with women on probation that have been mandated to participate in the (AB) 109 Bill. Miss Johnson shared with me what a day consists of working with these women The interview started with Carla sharing information regarding this program, how it came to exist and its impact upon these women. Carla explained to me that “In 2011, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed Assembly Bill (AB) 109 and AB 117, historic legislation that has helped California to close the revolving door of low-level inmates cycling in and out of state prisons” (n.d.). This means “Assembly Bill 109 establishes the California Public Safety Realignment Act of 2011 which allows for current non-violent, non-serious, and non-sex offenders, who after they are released from California State prison, are to be supervised at the local County level. Instead of reporting to state parole officers, these offenders are to report to local county probation officers” (n.d.). This means more opportunities for those that have been incarcerated for low level crimes. ...When I was deciding whom I wanted to interview, I had a tough time finding the right coach because I never had a coach truly understood myself as an athlete. I’ve had good coaches over the years don’t get me wrong, but finding the coach I admired the most was hard. ...Approaching new people at school can sometimes be a difficult thing. Before I had the chance to interview Bobby I had only noticed him around school every now and then, and I never seemed to have a good opportunity to actually approach him and have a conversation. Interviewing Bobby told me minor things such as when his birthday is, to other more important things, like what he wants his career to be when he gets older and what he seems himself succeeding his graduation from high school. ...On November 14th, 2015. I conducted an interview with my volleyball teammate, Kelsey Olion. To no one’s surprise we did the interview on a bus traveling to an away volleyball game. We waited until everyone had put their headphones in and laid back in their seat before we started. This created a quiet environment. The only noises were the sound of our voices and the humming of the bus. Because of my relationship with Kelsey, our interview ran very smoothly with no awkward or uncomfortable situations. Or find themselves as the host of a super bowl party with no idea what food to make to or how to make it for a large party of people. That is why the authors of “How to Interview” and “…Chili for Fifty” wrote their essays, to help others. At a first glance someone wouldn’t think that the essays have anything in common. Once one takes a deeper look into them it can be found that both essays can be useful to a young adult audience and offer helpful steps to completing separate tasks in everyday life. This is all done by using different writing techniques. Although both have a similar purpose the way each task is explained is different. For example, in”…Chili for Fifty” Eric Michalski says “… you could boil a cow’s head in. (Don’t ask how I know.)”(Michalski 359), “I hate Jalapenos” (Michalski 361), and “If you plan on moving the chili pot, which you shouldn’t, potholders are useful.” (Michalski 359). These examples show that Michalski uses a more informal tone, almost as if the reader is having a conversation with the author about how to make the chili.
