Personal Narrative: A Career In Human Resources

Being raised in poverty and having neither of my parents attend college, I didn’t think I would ever be able to obtain what I have today. To start off my story, my career in Human Resources began in the United States Army. In October 2014, I enlisted with a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code of 13D which is a Tactical Data Systems Specialist; it is the position that directs and calculates artillery rounds. I was named the Distinguished Honor Graduate of my Advanced Individual Training class which was a title afforded to only those who met a certain academic threshold as well as being the best out of their class. To describe this feat, the 13F trainees also known as Forward Observers reported that my round which was instructed to hit a vehicle a few miles away entered the driver’s side door. I tell you this story not for bragging rights but for comic relief as when I arrived to my first unit I then filled a slot of a clerk and never again performed the duties of my contractual MOS ever again. …show more content…
I was in charge of over one hundred and twenty personnel in terms of their records and requests. I provided guidance and supervision to two to three other personnel concerning the personnel office. These duties were performed in a garrison and deployed environment and ranged from benefits, adverse actions, compliance audits, awards, appraisals, and adhering to Division and Brigade policies. Upon exiting the military through a disability retirement due to injuries sustained on deployment I continued my Human Resource career with the Department of Veteran Affairs in November
