The sun beat down on the salty, turquoise waters. The day was like any other. I could feel the breeze running over my heads and I could hear the constant singing of the gulls. I am Scylla. I live in a cave in the Strait of Messina. Before, I was a beautiful nymph. Then that cursed witch Circe transformed me into this horrible, six-headed beast over a dispute, some 100 years ago. She ruined my life forever. To this day, I still hate her for all of the pain and suffering that she caused me.
Just as my stomach rumbled with hunger, I saw a dot on the horizon. As it got closer, I could make out a ship. “Finally, this will be my first meal in weeks”, I thought as I stretched my necks, preparing for the hunt. Every ship that passed through this strait …show more content…
Throw them now!” yelled the captain. The spears flew through the air like eagles, straight and as fast as can be. It must have been luck for I evaded all but two spears, which clipped some of my tentacles. The others splashed in the choppy water all around me. The men all ran to grab more spears.
I had had enough of this. Who did they think were to be throwing weapons at someone as powerful as I? If they were not completely terrified of me, then I had not done my job properly. So, I reached down, and I grabbed another man off the deck of the ship while he was bending over to pick something up. Then, I tossed him up as if he was a doll for everyone on the ship to see, and swallowed him whole.
This made all the men, including the captain, who had faced me so bravely before, turn white with fear. And just to scare them even more, I added my best evil laugh. With that, everyone remaining on the ship dropped their weapons and ran for the rowing benches farthest away from me. There, they proceeded to grab the oars and row like no one had ever rowed before. The ship went from bobbing on the waves to skipping over them. For good measure, I snapped a couple of my mouths in the air behind them as they flew over the churning sea.
