BANG! BANG! “Sargent! Enemy at 130 North East is firing shots in our direction, should I take him out?” I said. Throughout all of the times that I’ve been shipped out here, to the wonderful country of Iraq, no enemy has ever taken fire at me before we’ve even landed the helicopter. “Private Austin, how dumb are you? Those shots are nowhere near us. It’s more than likely just some terrorists having a dispute.” Either Sargent Peppers is going insane, or I am, because I can clearly hear bullets sprinting past our apache attack helicopter. The guns firing in the distance are the only source of light, to the naked eye, at this time of night. After each bullet is fired, I get a glimpse of the terrain, covered in rocks, mud, and dead plants. …show more content…
BANG!
Shots are ringing out just a few blocks over, I can see the firefight.
“Who goes there!”
“Sargent? It’s me! Private Austin.”
“Yes! Austin, welcome back. Where have you been?”
“I’m not sure, I remember waking up in some helicopter next to someone who claimed to be you. Don’t worry, I took care of the imposter. Damn terrorists and their lies… Anyways, where were those gunshots being fired just a moment ago?”
“Oh.. umm… We thought we saw a terrorist so we began opening fire. Turns out it was just a deer in the distance. Ain’t that funny?”
“Haha, your humor has never changed Sargent.”
“Yes, haha! We have a house over here, would you like to come rest with us? We have an important day ahead of us, tomorrow.”
“Of course, Sargent. Any chance there’s any chicken leftover?”
“No, we ran out. On the brightside, we do have lamb. Let’s go get you washed up and eat some food.”
What in the world… Lamb? What has gotten in to him? I’ve never even met someone who eats lamb meat. Anyways, I am extremely filthy and a shower sounds perfect.
“Austin, are you coming?”
“Yeah, sorry. Walking into this house, I immediately smell blood, sweat, and humidity.
“BAH BAHEHEHEH”
“What the hell was …show more content…
My team seems a whole lot shorter than they had before… They also smell different. And why are they carrying RPGs? Did they steal them off the body of a terrorist? Who are the terrorists, anyhow? There’s a vehicle approaching us in the distance at high speed… “That’s them, the terrorists, in the distance! Aim your weapons.” “Omega delta!” Who is approaching us? How do they know our secret code? This can’t be… If that’s my team and this group is not, I must have murdered Sargent Peppers back at the helicopter. “Private Austin! Run!” How can this be true… I need to get out of here. I see a bunker on the other side of the road. As I passed it earlier, it appeared to be several miles long. BOOM One of the terrorists attempted to fire his RPG at me as I was running away, only to have fired it directly at the ground, obliterating himself and more than half of his team. I cannot look back any longer, I need to get as far away from here as possible. After about thirty minutes of pure sprinting across this bunker, I hear a voice in the distance. “Private Austin! Are you in there?” I approach the end of the tunnel and my team standing

Personal Narrative: My Life In A Bag

...On Tuesday, January 23, 2018, I preformed my life in a bag speech. Overall, I feel that my speech was decent, especially for being the first speech assignment for the course. Though I definitely believe I have areas in improve in, such as the rate that I am speaking, my tone in voice, and dividing my time accurately for each set of point. Before the presentation, I was slightly nervous. I felt confident in my topic and the contents of my speech, but I was worried about the length of my speech and the grade I might get on it. When I had practiced my speech at home, my lengths varied greatly at first. As I refined my speech, the variations decreased, but were still present. My anxiety towards the grade was mostly present since this was the first...

Plastic Bags Don’t Suit You

...Plastic Bags Don’t Suit You: A campaign to reduce plastic bag use Plastic bags, invented in the 1930s, were first introduced to super markets in 1977. In the following decades, they have spread all over the world. Currently, almost 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year (Warner, 2010). This waste can be considered as a symbol of consumerism. Meanwhile, it’s also the evidence of our ignoring the environment. In the past half century, efforts have been made to reduce or even eliminate the use of plastic bags. Until now, the global use of plastic bags has been on the rise, according to The Culvert Chronicles (2011). That’s why this national campaign needs to be launched. It’s time to declare a war against the plastic bags. And with the assistance of multiple cognitive theories, it’s not hard to win this war. Harm of massive plastic bag use Plastic bags are usually made from oil. In the US alone, an estimate that about 12 million barrels of oil were needed to meet the US citizens’ needs of 100 billion plastic bags in the year 2001 (Jenkins, 2011). And if we think about the global situation, the oil consumption resulted from modern society’s addiction to single-use plastic bags can be a major contributor to global warming (Khoo, H.H., & Tan, R.B.H., 2010). Moreover, oil is not renewable, and our attempts of finding new alternative energy haven’t been proved effective so far. Both manufacturing and recycling plastic bags generates toxic gases, like compounds of...

Slavery Narratives

...Describe the genre of Slave Narrative in his essentials on the basis of an example. What was the role of the genre for the abolitionist movement? Anti-slavery literature was very important for the abolitionists` fight against slavery. The Slave Narratives took a special importance because of the fact that slaves reported from the personal perspective. They described autobiographically how the life in captivity looked like. Consequently, they disputed the description of slave keeper, which were played down and romanticized. Frederick Douglass, one of the former slaves, wrote his story on his own, whereas some who couldn´t write and read (who were illiterate), dictated their stories to abolitionists. Those wrote and published these stories. Moreover, the Slave Narratives always were authenticated in preface and epilogues from whiteness. In the following part, I will quote many a time from the autobiography of the mentioned Frederick Douglass‘ “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass“ “Master, however, was not a humane slaveholder. It required extraordinary barbarity on the part of an overseer to affect him. He was a cruel man, hardened by a long life of slaveholding. He would at times seem to take great pleasure in whipping a slave. I have often been awakened at the dawn of day by the most heart-rending shrieks of an own aunt of mine, whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood. No words, no tears, no prayers...

Personal Narrative: People's Goal For A Bible Camp

...Personal Narrative Most people’s goal for a bible camp is not to get in trouble ,but on the other hand I am not like most people. I was not actually planning on getting in trouble ,but if you would have seen my tribe you would understand how we were able to get in trouble and still have much fun. Most grades had a huge spread out from girls in 6th grade to 9th grade. For us though we had about all 9th graders so we were all very wild and fun. Well it was the third day of camp and we were suppose to be having an overnight in the woods ,but since it was raining like crazy we could not. The two Maras, Olivia, Shelby ,and I still made fun out of the rain including making a slip and slide with only the ground and ourselves. We were...

...contemplation. Instead of exposing a world of negativity, The Mezzanine, completely defies the common perception of the hyper-productive, desensitized post-modern society. The symbol of the escalator allows Baker to illustrate his take on the industrious, consumptive postmodern world. It was quite interesting to witness the methods Baker used to interrupt time for both his protagonist and his audience –of possible naysayers. The time spent on the infamous escalator forces Howie to explore many of his forgotten memories. Immediately, the thoughts flow through his mind as he approaches the escalator. “It would have been less cumbersome, in the account I am giving here of a specific lunch hour several years ago, to have pretended that the bag thought had come to me complete and ‘all at once’ at the foot of the up escalator, but the truth was that it was only the latest in a fairly long sequence of partially forgotten, inarticulable experiences, finally now reaching a point that I paid attention to it for the first time. (Baker, p. 9)” A simple lunchtime errands leads to the beginning of deep contemplation. Already, we see that his reflection doesn’t have to arise while he is absent from the commotion of his workday life. With a simple elevator ride, Baker is showing us that the workday life and one of the universal...

Susan Cain Introverts

...homes or schools. Overall, Susan Cain's Quiet illustrates the unique perception introverts have of the world and the value they hold in it. Narrative (1st Person) A story or written account of events The novel is frequently interspersed with first-person narrative, where the author accounts for her own personal journeys. The use of this thematic element broadens the message in allowing for more emotional appeal and casual prose. It separates itself from a more informative, textbook-like feel and reiterates the fact that this book, at its core, is about humanity. Quiet mentions the idea that introversion and human experience are not black and white; the first-person narrative brings this principle to the forefront by letting perspective shape the writing. "I've paid $895 in exchange, according to the promotional materials, for learning how to be more energetic, gain momentum in my life, and conquer my fears. But the truth is that I'm not here to unleash the power within me (though I'm always happy to pick up a few pointers); I'm here because this seminar is the first stop on my journey to understand the Extrovert Ideal" (Cain 35). The author, Susan Cain, writes about her experience going to a seminar. Rather than describing events like this in objective detail, she tells her own personal tale. The writing includes personal touches and feelings. It welcomes (even urges) the reader to see the world through an introvert's eyes and consider her point of view. In describing...

Invention

...invention Commercial Break!!: Creative Play With Media Influence Purpose: Works well to introduce a personal visual media paper, or other media analysis paper, because it encourages students to think critically about their childhood experiences with TV, etc in a personal, creative way. The exercise may become an early paper draft, or simply stimulate their thinking about the programs and commercials they have watched, and how these media affected them. Description: Students will write creative narratives about a childhood TV experience, then trade papers with another classmate, who will assess the program, the narrator, and then complete the narrative with a commercial break description suited to the program and audience. You may want to have your own example written up to read to them before each step, just to get them thinking about what’s possible. Suggested Time: 20 minutes to a full class period Procedure: Ask the class what their favorite shows were as kids: cartoons, sitcoms, even documentaries. You may want to bring in a few stills or uTube clips to project (in a tech class), as a memory jogger (ex. The Cosby Show, Ren & Stimpy, etc). Once you’ve discussed a nice variety of TV programs, ask the class to freewrite for 5-10 minutes (however long you wish to tell them) in first-person P.O.V. about their experience watching a show like these as a kid. They should be specific and detailed, writing whatever comes to memory about what’s going on in the program and their thoughts/reactions/and...

Travels and Culture

...Writing 101: Title University of Maryland University College  Insert Title Here Throughout my life I have traveled to many countries on four different continents. My occupation is centered around interactions with other human beings, despite their background, culture, language, values, or beliefs. My success hinges on my ability to relate to other people and earn their trust. This in and of itself can be an overwhelming task when dealing with other Americans. Pile on top the stresses of a hostile environment where your country is viewed as an occupier, morally and religiously at odds with the host nation, and the fact neither of you speak the other’s language. This, to some extent or another, has been a large part of my life for the past eight years in the Marine Corps. Other than making me really, really good at party games like Pictionary where you have to communicate without words, I have picked up some similarities through my experiences between the cultures I have interacted with that are shared despite geographic separation, cultural exclusivity from lack of outside influence or exchange, and prior indoctrination of biases through propaganda or limited experiences. In the following pages, I intend to discuss these similarities to assist the traveler when she or he finds themselves in a similar position. While each interaction with an individual in a foreign country may seem trivial to the average American, that may be the only American that foreigner ever...

Jane Osborn Analysis

...Presenting ideas successfully to an audience can be challenging; however, if done right, it can greatly benefit both parties. Kirk Osborn spoke on the importance of presenting information through analogies and stories in an engaging manner. By using this method, instead of overwhelming the audience with an overload of information, the audience and presenter interactions become more valuable. Osborn demonstrates the significance in effectively connecting with the audience through not only his stories and analogies, but also his own delivery. The first example of a successful technology Osborn introduced was Transmeta. However, when it was initially pitched to the public, the company had a difficult time convincing people of Transmeta’s worth....

Reel Women

... how severe is sexism in the film industry? This 20 minute long documentary is based on women’s careers in the film industry, how they may be underrepresented, why this inequality persists and how this may have increased throughout the years. Actresses and women from around the world are calling out sexism in the film industry. “Is there a lack of material and great stories for women to work with?” These questions will be answered through a compilation of archive footage and interviews with female students to understand how younger women aspiring in strong career paths feel about it – and also women that are already in the industry who experience the inequality first hand. This leads to my first contributor which will introduce narrative and to give the audience a strong storyline to follow: Carla Lacey is 46. She has recently graduated from Manchester University and wants to excel in her dream of becoming a successful screenwriter. She grew up always wanting to be a singer but suffered with heavy bipolar, restricting her from following her dreams. Carla wrote poems and two novels which are published in books and on the internet – with this not being good enough for her she researched into screenwriting and now aspires to work with many other female screenwriters in the industry.
