Literacy results from the combination of passion, hard work, dedication and success. Obtaining the stature to be viewed as literate in an area is a process, there are no short cuts to get you to that level, and no substitutions for the work you have to put in. An area I believe that I am literate in is soccer. In my 18 years alive, I have put in countless hours, shed tears of both anguish and joy, persevered through the toughest times, and have been recognized for my achievements. In the process to obtaining literacy, passion is the driving force that ignites a reason to become literate in an area. My soccer journey started at a very young age, when I was five years old my parents decided to sign me up to play in our community youth soccer organization. It was love at first sight, from that point on, I always needed a ball at my feet. At a young age, a majority of my love and passion was based off of the amount of fun, and enjoyment I had playing the game itself. Another aspect of my passion at a young age, was the satisfaction of feeling like I belong to a group. I always was one of the smaller kids in my class, sports like football did not cater to my size. Often times, I felt that I could not compete in a lot of sports my peers played, due to my size, until I began playing soccer. This is one aspect of soccer that I have always loved, size does not matter at all! The best soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi, stands only 5 foot 7, and weights a mere 148 pounds. In soccer, once I began improving my literacy, I was able to strive for bigger goals and achievements. My soccer team and I both have experienced a good amount of success. I played on the same club soccer team my entire life, ever since my teammates and I were 8 years old. Our team stared out in the lowest division for our age group, by the time that we finished our club careers we ended up moving all the way up to one of the top teams in the entire Midwest. There were numerous times my team struggled, we lost some of the most important games ever and some years did not move up through the ranks. But my team had the mentality to never give up, we knew how we had to achieve our goals and that was through putting more time in.
