In my life, I have experienced many different styles of leadership through interaction with different leaders such as coaches, teachers and camp counselors. Despite the lasting effect their specific leadership abilities had on me, most leaders I have known have come and gone, and I only am able to learn from there for a short time. However, there is one leader in my life who has seen me through my entire life, and has guided me to become the person I am today. This person is my mother, Lori Johnson. My mother is a courageous mother of three, and a wife of 26 years to my father, Ron Mercer. My mother's strength and determination as a person is evident in how she selflessly and fearlessly she leads both my family and her many other endeavors. Effective leadership requires three specific skill sets, these are conceptual skills, interpersonal skills and technical skills. First, conceptual skills allow a leader to step back and look at the "big picture" in order to effectively analyze, anticipate and use sound judgment in their reasoning. Through her use of critical thinking, and wise intuition, my mother exhibits conceptual skills that allow her to provide appropriate and effective guidance to those following her. Second, a true leader uses interpersonal skills to develop relationships and communicate with those around them.
