The last run”

There I was the last few seconds of the game, it was my turn to kick. And I ran up there as they pitched a fastball. I slammed it out into the field and i started running toward first base .they were bringing it in. Well I was running to second base I twisted my ankle.

However then I thought to myself what if I don't complete the task .They won't be happy with me, maybe, I should have practiced last night I regret it. all I did was sit around. and ride my bike. But I didn't practice. I wonder what I would have done if I could flash back in time to go practice instead of riding my bike.

But then I made it to second base. When I twisted my ankle it hurt so bad. I thought I wouldn't make it, i'd get tagged out, but I kept

Maus: A Survivor's Tale

...In Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, Art Spiegelman presents not only his father’s Holocaust narrative but also his own personal narrative, especially with regards to his relationship with Vladek. Readers learn that Artie and Vladek do not always get along, and there is a palpable tension between them. Vladek seems frugal and argumentative, while Artie appears self-centered and uncaring. In both cases, the characters’ faults are not glossed over. They are portrayed realistically, with positive and negative traits on full display. These portrayals accomplish two different goals for Spiegelman: one, they emphasize Artie’s interest in accuracy as opposed to sentimentality, and two, they allow the audience to discover Artie’s own personal trauma—namely,...

The Ingenuity of Narrative in Memento

...The Ingenuity of Narrative in Memento Abstract: Narration, simply put, is telling stories. However, the way movies narrate tales is not like that of novels developing plot in words or drama unfolding in stage space, but has its own special method for narrative - moving images. In Memento, through its unique nonlinear narrative structure and intense structure contradiction, the motifs of memory, self-deception and revenge and the philosophical exploration of existential angst are demonstrated in an elaborate and subtle way. Key Words: Memento narrative structure narrative contradiction Memento recounts the story of Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia, who distorts his own memory to deny the harsh reality in a both conscious and unconscious way. Living in a world full of lies fabricated by himself, the ill-fated protagonist makes the very principle of his life consist in the pursuit and systematic exercise of the revenge for his wife’s death which is actually caused by himself. In Memento, the splendid way of narration gives audience not only indelible psychological experience, but also a test on their ratiocination. Below is the analysis of narrative advantages in Memento from aspects of narrative structure and narrative impetus, compared with novels and dramas. I.Narrative Structure Narrative structure is the structural framework that underlies the order and manner in which a narrative is presented to a reader, listener, or viewer. Compared...

...of resound realism, a fork in the path that resonates with many readers. Keith’s friend Stephen, also described as the “best behaved boys at Marlings” offers Keith and his friends a cigarette (68). Mickey and Norman do not hesitate to take the offering, and the pack is raised like a “gun” at Keith and in turn it is you who decides how to react. This is a crucial moment, a gateway to partake in society’s pressures. You are given three choices: to turn down the cigarette, try to fake smoke it as demonstrated by your friend Mickey, or do better than the guys next to you and smoke it properly like your friend Stephen. Most choices given by the novel can be labeled as the easy, moral decision like the first choice given or bad choices like the last. Other choices can be described as neutral...

...Synthesis *Disclaimer: the views represented in the synthesis essay may not necessarily represent my personal opinions (I won’t write this disclaimer on the AP test). To live a meaningful life is awfully vague, for it can mean a life of happiness, of financial superiority, and of success. But the reason behind why the definition remains vague is clear: we become too obsessed with external factors and often forget ourselves--our character and our individuality. Thus, the prospect of a meaningful life continues to run away from us as we grow jealous of others who have more resources than we. To live a truly meaningful life that embraces both controllable and uncontrollable factors, we must resist trying to please others by avoiding the tendency...

Performance Appraisals

...Performance Appraisals A performance appraisal is very useful to a company and their employees. Performance appraisals are “the formal process through which employee performance is assessed, feedback is provided to the employee, and then corrective action plans are designed” (Youssef & Noon, 2012). For this assignment I am going to use my mother as an example. In this short paper I will be: describing the occasion in which she was being evaluated, describing the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluation process, and providing at least two strategies to improve the performance appraisal process. My mother works for my Aunt Jane. Jane owns affordable apartment buildings and only has a small staff of five (including herself). My mother is a secretary/inspection worker. She mainly does the secretary work, but once every six months she inspects the apartments (unless it is a problem apartment then it’s done monthly). Jane is pretty laid back when it comes to employer responsibilities. She does not give out yearly raises, evaluations, etc. Rather, Jane goes by a time based example. The ways she looks at it is for every five years she will give out raises if the employee deserves it. Since Jane works side-by-side with her employees, she is always evaluating them on how they do their work. Some strengths of doing the daily evaluations are that the work is always done when it is supposed to be done and it is done the way the boss (Jane) likes it. What Jane does would be considered...

An Exploration of How People Form Trust in Cloud Computing Sarah Kim University of Texas at Austin 1616 Guadalupe Suite #5.202 Austin, TX 78701-1213 srhkim@gmail.com ABSTRACT Ayoung Yoon University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 216 Lenoir Dr. CB #3360 100 Manning Hall, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 ayyoon@email.unc.edu journalists, IT experts, and scholars have addressed challenges of trust in cloud computing often accompanied with concerns for security, privacy, diminishing user control, lack of transparency, and reputation issues (e.g., Ghosh & Arce, 2010; Kahn & Malluhi, 2010; Pearson & Benameur, 2010; Habib, Ries, & Muhlhauser, 2010). Many of the trust-related discussions, however, are often based on the viewpoints of service developers/providers or technology focused (e.g., Hwang & Li, 2010). Cloud service providers (CSPs) saying “trust me” does not necessarily motivate people to respond with “I trust you.” Understanding of users’ thoughts on trust issues in the cloud computing environment is necessary in order to build and preserve trust between users and cloud service providers. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH The present study explores individual end-users’ perspectives of cloud computing, especially issues regarding their trust/distrust of cloud services. While current cloud computing service development focuses on adoption by enterprises and organizations, individual endusers who use cloud services in their everyday lives also constitute an important consumer...

Motivasi

...Notes on Case Analysis David Robinson, September 2008 Business school cases are quite long and complicated. We study cases not so much to find the right answer, but to train ourselves in systematic analysis so we will be effective decision makers in the business world. Successful case preparation depends on multiple readings of the case and multiple points of view. Multiple Readings of the Case If you attempt to analyze a case by pulling an “all-nighter” (waiting until the last minute, spend hours poring over the case and going line by line looking for insights) you will be overwhelmed. You should plan for multiple readings of the case over several days, complemented by group meetings and discussion. Multiple Points of View Even if you are preparing to write an individual brief, you should plan to discuss a case with a study group. You’ll notice that in business the major consulting firms always assign a team of people to each client, not just their single best industry expert. The reason for this is that no one person is likely to comprehend all the problems a firm faces. No two individuals are likely to have the same insights, but the combined wisdom of a team is likely to come up with a fairly comprehensive analysis. First Reading of the Case You should read the case first on your own—if you meet with your study group and open the case book and say, “OK, what’s this about?” there is every likelihood that your team will degenerate into “group think” (one person comes...

Voyages and Visions Essay Exam

...! Voyages and Visions Essay Exam! 1. Mary Rowlandson in ‘A Narrative of the Captivity’ sees a sense of hope and gives her suffering all to God, even though her daughter has faced death, as she says: “Thus nine days I sat upon my knees, with my babe in my lap, till my flesh was raw….” (Page 65). She also makes a reference to the 28th chapter of Deuteronomy; where Moses warns that God will bless those who obey Him and curse those who do not. “So I took the Bible, and in that melancholy time, it came into my mind to read the first chapter of Deuteronomy, which I did, and when I had read it, my dark heart wrought on this manner, that there was no mercy for me, that the blessings were gone, and the curses come in their room, and that I had lost my opportunity” (Page 67). But, instead of losing her last resolve, she continues to read on; “But the Lord helped me still to go on reading till I came to chapter 30.. there was mercy promised again, if we would return to Him by repentance; and though we were scattered from one end of the Earth to the other, yet the Lord would gather us together, and turn all those curses upon our enemies. I do not desire to live to forget this Scripture, and what comfort it was to me….” (Page 67). This shows that even through her misery from losing her daughter and being held in captivity, she gave it all to the Lord; and prayed in finding peace and a new life. With her faith, nearing the end of her long journey, she states: “ But I was fain...

African American Literature

...because these factors contribute and influence an author’s point of view as well as each author’s unique voice and message depending on the time period. Harriet A. Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is a slave narrative. The literary conventions of the slave narrative define the work. Slave narratives echo biblical stories that often reflect persecuted groups attempting to escape to freedom. Jacobs’s piece details her struggle to escape her master from sexual abuse. Vivanco (2003), “The process from sin to rebirth in spiritual autobiographies is paralleled by the process from slavery to freedom in slave narratives. Slaves experience a change from chattel, enduring suffering, to man or woman living in the Promised Land, the North,” (para. 5). Further distinction of the slave narrative is how authors shape the story, often chronologically. Slave narratives illustrate an author’s personal experience though many share common themes of extreme violence/abuse and racial prejudice. Slave narratives are essentially autobiography, which offer an author’s own experience for readers to find meaning. Jacobs’s female voice sheds light on issues affecting slave women; sexual abuse and losing children to death or slave trade particularly. Jacobs’s narrative is a prime example of how different slave women were treated as opposed to men. Both...

It belongs to the genre where the author alters events that really happened in the past and sets his plot in the resulting changes. In the case of Flight, the novel can be called speculative fiction with a heavy dose of history and historical elements. O What Is That Sound

...O•Auden suggests that in times of war, when death is threatened, the need for self-preservation is stronger than personal loyalties. •He suggests that war makes people corrupt, and breaks even the strongest bonds (ie, marriage) - Indeed, it seems that the husband is keeping the wife calm and in place so that she can be captured but he can escape. •He suggests that people who create war or pursue the capture of others are evil/immoral. The rhythm generally is used to imitate the marching soldiers. Therefore, the longer the poem goes on, the longer the soldiers have been marching and the closer they are to the characters creating panic. The narrative is a conversation between the two characters but changes to 3rd person at the end. The voices can be viewed either way. Form OWITS is a poem about the universality of war through the use of war affecting the lives of the couple in the poem causing them to run away. There is a sense of betrayal too depending on who you choose to be the first voice and second voice. The poem adopts the ballad form. This is a 18th-19th century form which is part of folk tradition. It is a typical form for Auden with many of his other poems using it such as O Where Are You Going. The imitation of ballad form is used to reflect upon the subject matter of war: there is no time (obscure time choice). It is recognisably in ballad form due to the consistent four beats (in musical terms) for every line. Each stanza is four lines long Structure ...

Film Style

...Ramandeep Kaur Essay Assignment ARTS-2000-0BW In this essay, I will be analysing two sequences from two different films. The first sequence is the last scene from the movie “Apocalypse now” directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie depicts the story of war, not as much the war between Vietnamese but the war within us. At first, movie appears very realistic and formalist and by the end, it is appearing symbolic as during the final scene Benjamin Willard finally killed colonel Kurtz and On the other hand ceremony of slaughtering the buffalo was happening at the same time which illustrate both scenes as one symbolic event. There are few editing techniques that worked well in this film are Sergei Eisenstein’s creative editing techniques who is a famous Soviet filmmaker. Eisenstein’s discovered three types of montage that is Rhythmic montage, Tonal Montage and intellectual montage which is also called conceptual or thematic montage. Eisenstein’s philosophy of intellectual montage which explain a way of editing that could form relation and symbols to two different shots created from juxtaposition. At the end, these two images of shooting and killing of Colonel Kurtz while Villagers were performing the ritual of slaughtering the water buffalo combined to make the connection between the viewers signifying the execution of civilian was more like a vulnerable slaughter. Another editing technique that greatly worked in this film is Rhythmic montage which is editing on the basis...
