When I think about the person I dream of being in the future, one key word comes to mind. That word is successful. For me, success is measured in several ways. One's financial situation, their effect on the world around them, and their overall happiness can all be elements used to measure success. When I think about the man I hope to become, I want to be financially secure and happy, but at the same time I want to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Villanova is the place where I can cultivate my skills and talents, in order to experience the personal growth necessary to be able to make a sizeable impact in the lives of others. Courtroom Psychology

...Abstract How human beings judge others has been the subject of many psychological studies over the years. In this paper, psychology in the legal arena is discussed including jury selection, juror life experiences and how it affects their biases, and the impact of the media on their decisions. Jury Selection and Its Importance Juries have the all too important task of making life altering decisions dealing with money, freedom, and many times life or death situations. Therefore, serving on a jury is a very serious and important proposition. Unfortunately, in today’s society it appears that many times juries are selected in a rather casual manner. Many individuals called to jury service, especially those with a higher education or in a higher economic echelon, can find ways to escape their civic duty, while those who are less educated and theoretically less qualified for jury service, end up serving on the jury and making critical decisions. A fairly new trend in jury selection is that of trial consulting, which gained notoriety in the mid 1990’s in the O.J. Simpson trial. The application of scientific jury selection (SJS) was first applied in 1971, and has grown tremendously in recent years for those who have the means to employ such methods. The goal of the trial consultant is to find persons to fill the jury seats who optimally will arrive at a decision that will be favorable to their client. The tools used by the trial consultant include “…community...

Common Core State Standards: The Inequalities Of Education

...Core State Standards, as already established, are standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy. The standards are high-quality standards that meet certain previous state standards, while enhance other state standards. After the Common Core State Standards were published in 2010, originally 46 states, the District of Columbia, United States territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity adopted the standards. However, not all of those 46 states still participate in the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Many states have begun to grow wary of the standards because they feel pressure from the national government to adopt them, or the states see problems in the curriculum. Edward Fierros, an educator at Villanova University, said, “Many educational experts agree that the CCSS in and of themselves will have a limited impact on improving student learning outcomes. However, states that fail to adopt CCSS or similar lose their eligibility for federal Race to the Top funds or NCLB waivers. States are required to adopt college and career-ready standards, and the CCSS are one way to demonstrate this goal. What is unclear is if states lose their eligibility for federal Race to the Top funds or NCLB waivers if they have already received such funding or been granted an NCLB waiver” (Common). While the Common Core State Standards were created to enhance education, there are supporters and critics of these standards. Critics of the Common Core State Standards are...

...International Journal of Management and Innovation Volume 1 Issue 1 (2009) Living with Organizational Politics: An Exploration of Employee’s Behavior Rajib Lochan Dhar, Symbiosis International University, India Abstract Though organizational politics has been perceived as a threat; negatively influencing levels of staff retention and work productivity, hardly any studies have focused on the employee’s attitude towards the perceived players and the survival strategies in such an environment in the Indian setting. This study aims to explore the employee’s perception of organizational politics, the phase that they go through while working and the ways they adopt to cope up with it, in a sample of 26 employees working in three different automobile manufacturing companies. Qualitative methods have been used in order to understand the feelings and experiences of employees while working in a politically influenced environment. Analysis of the data was done through phenomenological principles. Findings of this study led to the emergence of four major themes namely perceived threat, attitude towards the players, Coping Strategies and intentions to leave. This study has tried to bring out the emotional circumstances that employees go through while working in a politically influenced environment. Key words: Organization, politics, employees, perception and intention Introduction There is a bit of Machiavelli in every one of us. ...Leadership Development at 3M: New Process, New Techniques, New Growth Margaret Alldredge, Cindy Johnson, Jack Stoltzfus, 3M; Al Vicere, Smeal Coiiege of Business,The Pennsylvania State University; and the 3M ALDP Design Team rom the moment she first shook his hand in a receiving line after his arrival at 3M, Margaret Alldredge, staff vice president, Leadership Development and Learning, knew Jim McNemey was passionate about developing leaders. He talked of implementing Six Sigma (a rigorous process designed to improve productivity, increase profits, and enhance customer service) and shared his view that Six Sigma was not only about process improvement but aiso a way to develop leaders rapidly. He also suggested that 3M might be ripe for the establishment of its own "Crotonville," GE's vaunted center for cultivating leadership talent. Accounting

...P R E FAC E THE ACCOUNTING ENVIRONMENT Accounting is the most employable, sought-after major for 2009, according to entrylevel job site CollegeGrad.com. One reason for this interest is found in the statement by former Secretary of the Treasury and Economic Advisor to the President, Lawrence Summers. He noted that the single-most important innovation shaping our capital markets was the idea of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). We agree with Mr. Summers. Relevant and reliable financial information is a necessity for viable capital markets. Without it, our markets would be chaotic, and our standard of living would decrease. This textbook is the market leader in providing the tools needed to understand what GAAP is and how it is applied in practice. Mastery of this material will be invaluable to you in whatever field you select. Through many editions, this textbook has continued to reflect the constant changes taking place in the GAAP environment. This edition continues this tradition, which has become even more significant as the financial reporting environment is exploding with major change. Here are three areas of major importance that are now incorporated extensively into this edition of the text. A New Way of Looking at Generally Accepted Principles (GAAP) Learning GAAP used to be a daunting task, as it is comprised of many standards that vary in form, completeness, and structure. Fortunately, the profession has recently developed the Financial Accounting...

...Leadership Development Seminars and ECQ-based Readings The success or failure of any endeavor depends on leadership. Now, more than ever before, we need leaders in our organizations and in our world. Great leaders create and communicate a vision and move people into action to achieve it. They ignite our passion and inspire us to do our best. Government leaders in the 21st century are experiencing change at a more rapid pace than previous generations. Rapid advances in technology have expanded the quantity of work we are capable of accomplishing, and also where it’s accomplished. We have a more highly educated workforce, yet face diminishing resources with an increased demand for productivity, and the essential services we provide to the American public. To be successful at navigating these challenges leaders must develop the essential skills to motivate their employees, effectively communicate with others, fine-tune critical thinking skills, and build and leverage partnerships. Future leaders must also be visionary; i.e., possess the ability to identify trends and the courage to be innovative. Being technically adept in your field will no longer be enough. In response to these demands on senior executives, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management identified five Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) that all aspiring government leaders and executives must possess.
