My personality type is Inspiration an equally strong cross between Dominance and Infuence. There are many personality traits both good and bad that I feel really match my personality type. On the Dominance side, I would say the traits that are best about me are the fact that I am goal oriented and I tend to self-drive myself self without supervision. I am strong willed, decisive and efficient. My challenges tend to be that I am Competitive, Inattentive to details and very direct in nature.
On the Influence side of me, I would say the positive traits that I have tend to be that I am a people person taking an optimistic approach in situations, always taking stock in the popularity with others. I think with my heart and have a tendency to trust people indiscriminately. My challenges tend to be that I am Inattentive to details, and make superficial analysis in situations. The Hybrid of personalities makes for a strong sales person that always takes a ”I’m here to help attitude”. I would say this also is consistent with my tendencies as well.
There are also traits that are in the Inspirational personality that I don’t agree with match with my personality. On the Dominance side, I feel like the “resistance to be part of a team” trait is the opposite of how I am. Being team oriented is one of my best traits. On the Influence side, the trait that I feel least describes me would be that fact that I over sell. My approach to selling is very educational in content and I try not to sell high dollar because I would rather have many smaller account then many larger. It doesn’t hurt as much if they cancel.
Although I don’t believe all the personality traits of these two categories are across the board accurate. I do believe that it is a good snap shot of how I am as a sales person.

Prof. Dr. Chong Chin Wei – DBA/PhD/MPhil Malaysia 26th December 2012 MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION Are you born to be a leader? Are you a “natural”? Or is leadership a set of behaviors and competencies that anyone can develop, given the right experiences, circumstances, and training? Since the 1960s, researchers have examined whether there is a relationship between the basic agreed-on factors that make up personality and leadership. The Big Five personality factors are Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion, which some researchers have labelled the CANOE personality model as an easy aid to remembering each factor (Bligh, 2009). As Tejeda (2001) asserts, “the past two decades have witnessed a great deal of scholarly attention transformational leadership behavior, which is currently the most widely accepted leadership paradigm” (as cited in Rubin, Munz, & Bommer, 2005, p.845). Transformational leadership behavior represents the most active/effective form of leadership, a form in which leaders are closely engaged with followers, motivating them to perform beyond their transactional agreements. The leadership theories discussed in the paper include the trait-based, situational, and transformational leadership theories. Trait-based theories represented the earliest attempts to quantitatively study leaders and leadership effectiveness by focusing on the innate skills and traits of the person. Situational theories expanded to explore the influence of different situations on leadership. Lastly, transformational leadership theories further expanded on the role of the leader in motivating followers through inspiration. ...developing a vision of the future; then they align people by communicating this vision and inspiring them to overcome hurdles (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Throughout history strong leaders have been described in terms of their traits, trait theories of leadership differentiate leaders from non-leaders by focusing on personal qualities and characteristics. Different studies identified nearly 80 leadership traits, but only 5 of these traits were common in 4 or more studies (Robbins & Judge, 2009). A breakthrough of these studies came when researchers began organizing traits around the Big Five personality framework. It became clear that most of the dozens of traits emerging in various leadership reviews could be submitted under one of the Big Five and that this approach resulted in consistent and strong support for traits as predictors of leadership (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Extraversion is the most important trait of effective leaders when organized around the Big Five personality framework, conscientiousness and openness to experience also showed strong and consistent relationships, though not quite as strong as extraversion (Robbins & Judge, 2009). The traits of agreeableness and emotional stability weren’t as strongly correlated with leadership; it does appear that the trait...

...help contribute towards the effectiveness and success of the organization (Yukl, 2006, p. 21). Additionally, a leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort to influence people to follow that direction while possessing certain characteristics and traits. To be an effective leader, a manager must influence his associates in a positive way to reach the goals of the organization. They are numerous theories about leadership, or about carrying out the role of a leader. These theories both behavioral theories and trait theories as well as contingency theories such as the Leader Membership Exchange Theory, transformational leadership, path-goal theory, and Hershey & Blanchard situational leadership theory and how they influence leadership success. Trait theories are theories that consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from non leaders. In contrast, behavioral theories of leadership imply that individuals can be trained to be leaders. In recent times traits have been organized around the “Big Five Personality Framework” that is, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience. Extraversion out of all the other personalities is mostly found in individuals who indicate effective leadership. A core component of EI is that empathy and empathetic leaders can sense others’ needs, listen to...

Leadership Personalities

...1. Introduction There is a resurgence in the trait personality approach to understanding work-related behaviour and performance (for a current review, see Burch & Anderson, 2008). In particular, there is growing interest in the personality of leaders. For example, a recent meta-analysis into the trait-leadership relationship found leadership to be positively correlated with extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and negatively related to neuroticism (Judge, Bono, Ilies, & Gerhardt, 2002). While there is this developing literature considering the ‘normal’ personality of leaders, another literature is growing alongside – that of the ‘dark side’ of leadership personality, that is, more negatively connotated traits (e.g., Hogan & Hogan, 2001). The study of the ‘dark side’ of personality has an important role in helping organizations identify those with the potential for ‘derailment’, deviant behaviours, and poor work performance (e.g., Furnham and Taylor, 2004, Hogan and Hogan, 2001 and Moscoso and Salagdo, 2004). Within this literature, a relationship between the ‘dark side’ and transformational leadership has often been alluded to (see Parry & Proctor-Thomson, 2002), yet there is limited empirical research investigating this relationship. Transformational leadership has been described by Bass and Avolio (2004) as encouraging other people to perform and develop beyond what is normally expected of them, and differs from transactional leadership, which refers to...

Leaders have been depicted within an array of backgrounds to include prophets, kings, chiefs, idols, gods, government officials and inspirational individuals throughout the history. “The word leader dates back as early as the year 1300 but the word “leadership” did not appear until the first half of the nineteenth century” (Wren, 2008, p.50). The term “leadership” however, dates back as early as the Egyptians and Roman Greeks. “Throughout history, leadership has been defined by specific attributes that a leader is thought to have. There is not a right or wrong definition of leadership, but it is important to know the roots and history behind the term” (Coburn, 2008). Leadership is often defined as an intangible and usually difficult quality to define. However, it is not difficult to distinguish the traits of a...

...Walmart CEO: William Simon Part of the long-term success of Walmart is the effectiveness of the leaders within the organization, including CEO William “Bill” Simon. An exceptional leader achieves goals for and with their business for the reason that “successful and effective leadership means, fundamentally, influencing others by establishing a direction for collective effort and managing, shaping, and developing the collective activities in accordance with this direction” (Lather, A., Jain, V. K., Jain, S., & Vikas, S., 2009). According to Derue, Nahrgang, Wellman, and Humphrey (2011), “leadership is one of the most discussed and debated topics in the social sciences [beginning] with a search for heritable attributes that differentiated leaders from non-leaders and explained individuals’ effectiveness as leaders” (p. 7). William Simon, without a doubt, carried each of these qualities, and as such, has helped to develop Walmart into the amazing conglomerate that it is today. William Simon has been Chief Executive Officer and President of Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC since 2010, and has been the Executive Vice President of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. since 2010, as well. Leadership Models

...many individuals and has led to many theories and models to be developed that have both similarities and differences. Four theories or models of leadership that have been researched and developed include trait theories, transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and situational leadership. The research on each of these has varied in amount and focus, but mostly the information has helped to develop theories and styles that can be important in understanding and developing leadership skills (Clawson & Bevan, 2006). Trait Theories The first type of leadership theories studied revolved around the traits effective leaders were shown to have. Trait theories of leadership focused on what traits an individual has that assist in his or her leadership abilities. These traits were considered innate or heritable and were believed to be passed down through familial generations (Zaccaro, 2007). Originally the traits were believed to be a part of the individual from birth, but later enduring traits were considered just as important. Traits important to these theories included “accuracy in work, knowledge of human nature, and moral habits” such as judgment, speech, interpersonal, and administrative skills (Zaccaro, 2007, para. 1). Researchers would measure specific traits thought to be found in indivduals who...

...There is an old business saying, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” In order to be an effective leader of a large or diverse organization, one must have the courage to lead, follow, and get out of the way, depending on the situation. Every large organization has dozens or hundreds of leaders without titles who know just how to do that (Goddard, 2002, p.35). There are generally two types of leadership styles, transactional and transformational. Transactional leaders focus more on accomplishing tasks. They are job-centered leaders who concentrate on production and the technical aspects of performing a job. The transformational leader is more people-oriented; they focus on the individuality and personality of their employees. These leaders are charismatic and inspirational....
