Chelsea McMillen’s Persuasive Speech Outline

General Purpose: To persuade my audience
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience into being in favor of distributing contraceptives (condoms, birth control pills, spermicides, etc.) in high schools.
Thesis statement: In order to explain why contraceptives are becoming such a necessity in schools today, I will share how teen parenthood is being glorified, reasons for such an increase in teenage pregnancies, and how effective distributing contraceptives would be.

INTRODUCTION

I. Attention getter: (show slide of pregnant girls) How many of you have ever seen television shows like “16 and Pregnant”, “Teen Mom”, or “The Secret Life of an American Teenager”?
II. Credibility statement: I am not a teen parent, but I have several friends who are and went to school with several teenage parents. Once I chose this topic, I did a lot of research online about the rising problem of teen pregnancy and the unfortunate consequences of contraceptives not being available to teenagers.
III. Relating to the Audience: While most of you are probably not teenage parents, I bet many of you know either a couple girls who got pregnant at a young age or a few guys who got girls pregnant at a young age. Teenage pregnancy is something that affects all of us in some way, either in our homes and neighborhoods or on our televisions and computer screens.
IV. Thesis statement: In order to explain why contraceptives are becoming such a necessity in schools today, I will share how teen parenthood is being glorified, reasons for such an increase in teenage pregnancies, and how effective distributing contraceptives would be.

Transition: First, I want to share how teen parenthood is being glorified.

Persuasive Speech on Birth Control

...I. Introduction | A. Attention Material: What comes to mind when you see candles? We associate candles with celebrations (like Christmas or birthdays) or special occasions. Candles date back to the Ancient Egyptians who are credited with making the first candles. They used torches made by soaking the spongy core of reeds in melted tallow (National Candle Association: History of Candlemaking, p. 1). | B. Tie to the audience: I’m sure that all of us at some point have used candles for celebrations, romantic experiences, or for just plain decoration. The great part about making your own candles is that they are inexpensive to make and you shape the wax into something special. What could be more special than to make someone you love a homemade gift? | C. Credibility material: Two years ago, I made candles for decoration and also for people to purchase during a medieval Madrigal dinner production that our A Cappella choir put on. I have also made candles since then as a part of my church youth group around the Christmas season. | D. Preview: I will explain three basic things which include how to go about finding the right materials, how to melt the wax, and how to make a molded ice-cube candle. | [Transition: Let’s start by doing the most important thing, which is to find all of the materials, and tools needed to make candles.] | II. Body | A. The first step is to gather the equipment you will need (The Basics and Cool Candlemaking Ideas, p. 1). | 1. You will need...

Persuasive Speech: Teenagers Should Receive Birth Control

...Today, I would like to inform you about birth control and hope to persuade you that teenage girls should legally be able to receive birth control without parental consent. After writing about and researching this issue, I have gained the appropriate knowledge to inform others on my position. This has been a controversial topic for decades, spread all around the world.Unstable parental relationships, ensuring feelings of confidence and safety in girls, and lowering the rate of abortions are among the reasons I believe that girls should have access to birth control without parental consent, because it would be safe for girls to prevent pregnancy while empowering young girls to be more responsible and educated. First, it is important to know information...

Margaret Sanger The Morality Of Birth Control Summary

...Rhetorical Analysis of “The Morality of Birth Control” In the article “The Morality of Birth Control”, Margaret Sanger argued that birth control is a moral solution to unwanted pregnancies and everyone should be informed about it (559). She originally published these claims as a well-known speech. She had hoped to motivate people with positions of power to join her movement promoting birth control. This article was one of the first steps Sanger took to change society’s view about birth control. Although “The Morality of Birth Control” contains a lot of Margaret Sanger’s personal opinions, I agree with her claim and feel as though she made a persuasive argument. At the time that this speech was given, there was a lot of controversy over...

This is truly a celebration - a celebration of the contributions women make in every aspect of life: in the home, on the job, in their communities, as mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, learners, workers, citizens and leaders.  It is also a coming together, much the way women come together every day in every country.  We come together in fields and in factories. In village markets and supermarkets. In living rooms and board rooms.  Whether it is while playing with our children in the park, or washing clothes in a river, or taking a break at the office water cooler, we come together and talk about our aspirations and concerns. And time and again, our talk turns to our children and our families...

Politicians and Religious Leaders

...seats of power. Usually, the person in power can be a very charming person and has no issues with speaking in a public forum. Natural public speakers can very easily slide into these positions with ease. Over time, the two main seats of power are found within a political and religious setting. At times, the two different factions have combined, making the position of power much more controlling than ever before. With the use of manipulation through fear, political and religious leaders have been able to use this particular method. This way of control is nowhere near a new tactic. In the beginning of life, there is always the aggressor within a group of living organisms. The human race has evolved over time, but there are some, almost instinctual tick that keeps them breaking down into an alpha mentality. The control over the pack using violence or oppression is nothing more than control through fear. Bullying is an example of control through fear that is used within the academic halls of school. Some of the worst cases found are usually within the years when a youth is attending their middle school. The bully is the most feared individual on the playground or in the gym. To the bullied, they only see blind hatred toward others. They cannot understand how one person treats others so poorly, knowing the consequences that these actions will take on the bully...

Persuasive

...Persuasive Speech Ideas These penguins are persuading their friends to take a dip in the cool water... but you can persuade our class on any of the following ideas or come up with one of your own. Remember these are broad topics so make sure you narrow your area and choose your side so that you can properly defend your position. Also I NEVER censor speech topics HOWEVER keep in mind I want the ideas fresh, some topics are very OVER DONE - for example: "smoking is bad for you" - no kidding I think we would all agree with that. "everyone should go to college" - DUH you are preaching to the choir. "std's are bad you should protect yourself" - well there is a new idea. "drinking and driving could kill you or someone you love" - again no one would argue with that logic. So if you are going to pick a topic make sure you approach it in a fresh and exciting way - for example: "Barbie is a good role model" "Smoking Cigarettes are bad for you, so smoke cigars!" 1. same sex marriage 2. adoption 3. heaven and hell (careful to not preach to your audience) 4. abortion (overdone) 5. TV violence 6. gun control (overdone) 7. TV ratings 8. internet 9. profiling 10. Vietnam 11. immigrant laws 12. exercise 13. Abortion Term Paper

...Paper Birth Control and Its importance for Women Rights Women for centuries have been subjugated to men, and it’s hard to believe but there was a time in history in this country when women didn’t have any rights. Women couldn’t speak in public without the permission of men and were only looked to for bearing children, while taking care of the home. Throughout history women have fought for their rights with movements like the suffrage and birth control movements. The birth control unlike the suffrage movement is still an ongoing battle, even though women have the right to contraception, but many women don’t have access to because of certain state’s government have laws limiting that access to birth control. By the government controlling women’s access to birth control they are controlling the liberty for women. Birth control has been a very controversial topic and taboo since the classical period. Before one can grasp why and how birth control and the use of birth control can be controversial, one will need to understand what birth control is and the history. First, birth control should be viewed as a woman’s basic right that goes hand in hand with her first amendment right, and without any interference from the government. The all encompassing question is what is birth control? Birth control is a practice, material, or device by which sexual intercourse can be rendered incapable of producing a pregnancy (Walker 161). While birth control through the centuries...

Autism

...punishment). Behavior therapy and highly controlled learning environments became the primary treatments during the 1980s and 1990s. During the 1990s a concern arose that the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine contributed to the development of Autism, but a study published in 1998 that theorized there could be a link has been retracted because there is little evidence to support that theory (Mayo Clinic, 2010). Other common myths include autistic children cannot be affectionate; if a child makes eye contact, he or she must not be autistic; and autistic behaviors do not change over time. These and other misconceptions stem from an early misunderstanding of autism. Autism is a persuasive developmental disorder, affecting males five times as often as females with a prevalence of one out of every 600 live births (Autism, 2005). Other than...
