Introduction

A brief explanation of:
Terms of reference
Aims and objectives
Methods used in the investigation
Necessary background information
Definitions of abbreviations

Main Body
c.1400 words

Logical chapters, sections and subsections with clear headings
Section numbers next to headings
Essentials only (extras such as calculations can go in the appendices)
May include a methodology section
Written in a clear, direct style
Written in the third person e.g. The findings illustrate that . . .” rather than “I found that”

Conclusion
c.200 words

Draws together and evaluates your findings
Explains the significance of your findings
How have you responded to your investigation and what did you find (return to your introduction e.g. Was your hypothesis proved or disproved?)
You may wish to suggest areas for future research

Recommendations
c.100 words

It must present recommendations that logically relate to the findings in your report. It is not always necessary to include recommendations and in some disciplines this may form part of your conclusion.

Harvard system, unless told otherwise; all sources should be cited and should be organised in alphabetical order by author surname

Appendices

These are documents which add to the reader’s understanding of the report.
They do not need to be word processed. They should be numbered and listed in the contents; referred to in the appropriate section of the report

This is a guide outline. You will need to read your assignment brief thoroughly so that you follow any rubric laid out for your report accurately e.g. word count, referencing system, mandatory sections, permission to include appendices etc.
