...Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy: define, compare and contrast “There are a range of health care professions readily available to the community today. Three of them that are often compared include; Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy. It is important to understand the differences between and the purposes of each form of health care before commencing treatment with one of them. Chiropractic is a form of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and correction of misalignments and disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system. Chiropractors aim to improve the function of the bodily systems, through addressing neuromuscular pain with chiropractic adjustments and by eliminating any interference and discomfort that may be impairing the body’s ability to self heal to reach optimal health. Chiropractic originated in 1895 when DD (Full name here) Palmer, a local grocer with a keen interest in metaphysics, started as a magnetic healer until he put forward the principles of chiropractic, “I was a magnetic healer for nine years previous to discovering the principles which comprise the method know as chiropractic. During this period much of that which was necessary to complete the science was worked out. I had discovered that many diseases were associated with derangements of the stomach, kidneys and other organs...” (1) The word chiropractic literally means in Greek, “done by hand” (2) and public interest in the practice was generated when he “cured” a janitor...

...Need is an important concept in social work and it is sometimes difficult to define. According to the Oxford dictionary, ‘need is defined as requiring something because it is essential or very important rather than just desirable.’ Doyal and Gough (1991), define need in terms of physical survival and personal autonomy. However, some would argue that there are basic needs for economic and physical security, accommodation, food, clothing and social relationships that must be met in a civilised society but there is a relative dimension to need also. Therefore, what is seen as adequate in terms of meeting basic needs and the means through which they can be met, will vary over time, both historically and over the life course, as well as across different cultures. These definitions has led to focusing on two different approaches to understanding the concept of need. The first is Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1943). Maslow’s hierarchy is commonly displayed in a pyramid fashion, with the basic needs at the bottom and the higher needs at the top. The needs were depicted in this way to show the significance of each need on the others, with the most significant and broadest category being the physiological needs at the base (Redmond, 2010). Maslow’s Basic-Order Needs: Physiological needs are basic needs that are necessary for one’s survival, such as food, oxygen, shelter and sleep. These needs must be met before moving to satisfy needs higher in order. Safety needs includes the...

...Facebook: It's About the Money - Case study The birth of Facebook was in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard student, who started Facebook as a means of allowing students to communicate with one another. It gained its popularity quickly through the university and education system and became a worldwide phenomenon(Ahmed et al., 2013). In just over ten years, Facebook expanded from a small networking site to a publically traded organization worth an estimated $50 billion. Part of its success is based on the fact that it is free to join and Facebook boasts it always will be. The estimated number of users/subscribers of Facebook at the time of this publication was stated to be over 1 billion (Laudon & Laudon, 2014). In 2011, the vast majority, eighty-five percent, of Facebook's revenue was derived solely from advertising sales with the remaining attributed to sale of Zynga games (Laudon & Laudon, 2014).Importantly, the revenue stream associated with Facebook’s success is leveraged on the collection of information provided by the users. Users of Facebook create on-line profiles and upload their photos, videos, communicate with one another, and join a variety of different groups on a myriad of different issues, using the “like” button to identify their likes (Ahmed et al., 2013). Without question, social media plays a large role in our lives every day, and Facebook is at the center of that movement. While Facebook provides a means to communicate with one another and a means...

...Current research on cystic fibrosis gene therapy suggests that it will become an important treatment strategy INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disease, triggered by mutation in the gene CFTR i.e. cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. CFTR is an ABC gene i-e ATP-binding cassette (transporter) gene that encodes a protein. This CFTR protein is a chloride ion channel protein that controls the flow of chloride ions and water across the cells. This movement is important in generating sweat, digestive juices, as well as mucus secretion and its clearance. This CFTR gene is located at q 31.2 locus of chromosome 7 long arm. The most common mutation in cystic fibrosis is removal of three nucleotides that results in loss of a nucleotide phenylalanine (F) at 508th position at the long arm of chromosome 7. Depending upon the protein expression and function six classes of mutations have been identified in cystic fibrosis: CLASS I: these are non-sense mutations that hinder the protein synthesis as they have premature stop codons. CLASS II: these mutations are most commonly found in patients of cystic fibrosis that include the deletions of phenylalanine 508th del. As a result of this deletion, protein folding is reduced and as a result its transport to cell surface is impaired and it undergoes degradation within the cellular lysosomes. CLASS III: in these mutations, proteins are normally present but are not expressed to a level that responds to intracellular...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of a group of people with Parkinson’s disease and whether a relationship exists between time of evolution and severity of the disease. Secondary analysis was carried out on transversal data collected from 40 individuals with Parkinson’s disease registered in the Parkinson’s Association of Maringá, in MaringáPR-Brazil. Measures: three instruments were applied: a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Hoenh and Yahr Scale and the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39). According to PDQ-39, men referred to a lower quality of life, although, statistically, there was no significant difference between the two genders. Differences were only observed in the dimensions of “activities of daily living” and “social support”, in which men presented higher impairment, and “emotions” and “bodily discomfort”, where women showed higher impairment. ...[pic] Profesional journals are peer-reviewed, checked for factuality, consistency, citing relevant work, and drawing appropriate conclusions supported by the data. The concept of profesional journal as a means of developing reflective practice has become a popular topic in classrooms, professional journals, conferences, and continuing education programs (Boud & Walker, 1998). Many other names for profesional journal appear in nursing literature, including log, journaling, narrative pedagogy, dialogue journals, reflective practice, and reflective writing. Whatever people says, reflective profesional journal requires writing, a great deal of it. However, journals are an integral part of the teaching/learning in many nursing programs as well as in allied health programs and education in general. The purpose of this essay is to review the literature related to profesional journal and reflective practice and how it can be beneficial in the teaching/learning process. Reflective practice is a means of self-examination that involves looking back over what has happened in practice in an effort to improve performance or to encourage professional growth (Ruth-Sahd, 2003).
