...E2 6 May 2011 Homelessness/ Poverty in the United States A very important issue in our country is homelessness and poverty. This is important because poverty and homelessness have psychological effects on individuals. We can see this issue in Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle because the Walls family is always moving around. Homelessness affects your appearance severely. The Walls family doesn’t have enough food to go around. Research shows that the rate of homelessness and poverty is high. The government is trying to reduce the rate of homelessness and poverty. Many Americans have gone through poverty or will go through poverty at some point in their life. In my paper, I will attempt to inform you that homelessness and poverty is a topic which should be taken seriously. Homeless ness and poverty have psychological effects on individuals. In website http://ic.galegroup.com, homeless in the United States swelled for a variety of reasons during the 1800s. Such examples are: migration to the frontiers; displacement caused by the Civil War; immigration from Europe; seasonal employment in agriculture; construction, and mining. This is important because these are some causes of homelessness. Isn’t sad to know that there are so many reasons why there are homeless people out there? In 1929 the Great Depression triggered a new wave of homelessness, as many people lost their jobs. This is important because the Great Depression is yet another cause of homelessness! To address the...

...Poverty and Homelessness in Nebraska Kayla Potter June 8, 2013 HSM/210 Poverty and Homelessness in Nebraska With more and more people falling under the poverty line, I thought it was only fitting that I write about this target population. More people are starting families, the population is growing, and good paying jobs are scarce in today’s society, this is where the problem starts. Most jobs that are available today are most likely minimum wage jobs. More people are falling below the poverty line, which means more people are in need of assistance. Most people are doing everything they can just to survive and that is still not enough. This target population does not just focus on one particular age group, race, sex, or any other demographic. With pay falling and prices rising things can add up pretty quickly. In today’s society it is hard to even be able to afford the necessities in life, such as, food, clothing, and shelter. Then there are other necessities that add up quickly as well, such as electricity, heat, water, and putting gas in the cars to get to and from work and school. In today’s society it is getting harder and harder to get by. There are many places in Nebraska that were founded specifically to help these families that are struggling. One agency that helps this group of people is The Center for People in Need, located in Lincoln, Nebraska. This agency gives assistance to poor or low income families. The Center for People in Need helps these families...

...Social Problem Paper Homelessness and Poverty in the Midwest Sarah Rose Conklin Social Problems Spring Semester, 2010 Defiance College Submitted to: Alesia Yakos-Brown Date of submission: 4/27/10 Mahatma Ghandi once stated “Poverty is the worst form of violence”, this was true when Ghandi first stated this and it is still true in society today. Worldwide there is estimated to be at least 3.5 billion people who are living in poverty daily (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). That is around 1/5 of the world’s population (Sachs, 2005, pp. 289) It is estimated that 2.5 billion of these people are living on less than two dollars a day and the other one billion are living on less than one dollar a day (Mooney,Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). It isn’t fair for any person or family to live on such a small amount of money; and because of the high poverty level at least 18% of the world’s population goes hungry daily, that is every one in five people who go hungry (Mooney,Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). In 2008 it was reported that there were 1.5 million Ohioans’[people from Ohio] living below the national poverty level (Toledo Blade, 2010). In 2009 the U.S. census bureau reported that the population of Ohio is at 11,542,645 people (U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division , 2010), therefore it would put the number of people living below the poverty threshold at about 8% of Ohio’s population. When looking a social problem it may be beneficial to look at the...

...Poverty and homelessness are two issues that have become more and more common over the past several years. In just about every city, every state, and every country is a homeless population or families who live at or below the poverty level. While poverty and homelessness are sometimes the result of failed social connections, there are several other factors that can contribute to this issue like an economic recession, the onset of a mental illness, and even the involvement in the child welfare system. However, such factors can even be the end result of failed social connections. For the most part, I think that poverty and homelessness are a result of failed social connections. Many people fall into the wraths of poverty and homelessness because of a constant decrease in services, supports, and social assistance like financial assistance programs for those with low income or those who have lost a job. In addition, this problem becomes worse for those who grow up in a family with little to no income. If someone grows up in a poverty stricken family, it is much harder for them to get out of poverty as they typically have less resources than a person from a middle-class or wealthy family. Chances are they will not have a strong social network to turn to when it comes to attending college or...

...2016 Homelessness Affecting One Minority Greater Than Others “An individual may be considered to be homeless if that person is ‘doubled up’ a term that is refers to a situation where individuals are unable to maintain their housing situation” (National Health Care for the Homeless Council). This problem has affected people in different parts of the nation. Though this ‘ doubled up’ is a term used to refer to all homeless people, this category contains many different demographics. Some of these include: families, singles, males, females and members of different races. The problem is homelessness seems to be affecting one minority larger than other subgroups. Recent perspectives of homelessness...

...Homelessness and how it affects children Lewana Streeter Introduction Homelessness and poverty are ongoing issues that have existed for many years. Poverty has always been with us. But in the United States, poverty emerged as a political issues about 50 years ago (Dinitto, 2011). Along with poverty come many issues such as homelessness and going without food and clothing. These are basic necessities that everyone needs to survive. Also with poverty comes poor education. Usually the poorer the education the more likely an individual is to fall into poverty. One of the main issues with poverty is defining it. How do we know who are faced with poverty and homelessness, if poverty is not able to be defined? History of Poverty Many think that poverty will diminish over time (Dinittto, 2011). However, if there is a continued decline of education for women it is safe to believe that poverty and homelessness will continue to be a social policy issue. Poverty affects men women and children. Unfortunately, children are affected the most because they are the most vulnerable. Families are left without homes, jobs or the means to support their families. These same children are left without food or adequate clothing. And this has been the issue for years and years. Poverty as a political issue only came to light in the last 50 years (Dinitto, 2011). More Education Educating more women seems like a reliable alternative to homelessness and poverty. Is it reasonable to say the more...

...Flor Payan Prof. Jane Doe ENG 1102 November 17, 2014 Homelessness: Its Roots and Implications Everybody has been in touch with homelessness in America in one way or another. Either by looking at homeless people on the streets while driving home, or in a more unfortunate way, by dealing with it personally or knowing someone who deals with homelessness. It is clear that homelessness is a multifactorial problem, and its ramifications and consequences go beyond the simple fact of not having a home to call our own. Homelessness seems to affect more some segments of the population and some ethnic backgrounds more than others. With such facts, we can ask: what is the origin of homelessness? How someone becomes homeless? What can we do, as a society, to fight homelessness? And more importantly, why the strategies designed to fight homelessness are not working as effectively as expected? Considering the fact that hundreds of thousands of people are homeless and millions more at risk, as moderate estimates tell, the problem is clearly worse than we would like to think. There are clearly understood circumstances that create homelessness in America. Now “it is generally believed that the increase incidence of homelessness in the US has arisen from broad societal factors”, and economist and sociologists have found that homelessness is directly related to “changes in the institutionalization of the mentally ill, increases in drug addiction and alcohol usage, etc” (Quigley and Raphael)...

...Homelessness has been a problem in our society for as long as houses have existed. This will always be a problem and will unfortunately be a problem forever. There have always been people without houses and there always will be. Because of the paramount importance of balance of society and the economy, homelessness is both a good and bad thing. It is obviously awful because people aren’t living in houses, but it exceptional at the same time because without it, we would not have wealthy people. There always needs to be a balance in the economy, which includes both extremes. Homelessness is becoming an epidemic in recent times, and to stop it we should all have a broader understanding of the problem, which is mainly caused by poverty, natural disasters, and personal health reasons. The first main cause of homelessness is poverty. This issue is on a level of its own, being caused by many different factors, but for most people they either lose their job, or something else drastic happens. Because theses people do not have money, they then lose their house and have to live either on the...

...Why can’t we end Poverty in America? Jake Hauser English 102 12/6/13 Today in the United States, more than 46 million Americans are living in poverty. The word poverty is defined as; the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. In other words, poverty is essentially the state of being poor. In a broad perspective, there are two types of poverty. There is relative poverty which refers to people who live in poor accommodations, cannot afford certain necessities, and struggle to make ends meet. In most cases for theses people, there is welfare available to help them so it would be rare for them to go without somewhere to live or to go starving. The other kind of poverty is known as absolute poverty. This is the kind of poverty that you would see in third world countries. These people have no food, no water and no help and it usually leads to death. Believe it or not, poverty is a worldwide problem that is taking place in every nation on the globe. In fact, half of the people in the world today are living on less than $2.50 per day. Statistically, Haiti is the most poverty stricken country in the world, with 77% of it’s population living below the poverty line. It also has a 40% unemployment rate, and many poverty-stricken people live on less than $1 a day. The United States may not be the most poverty stricken country in the world, but that doesn’t mean that there still isn’t a big problem in our...

Homeless individuals may have no other choice than to live on the streets, trains, and alley ways to name a few places where homeless people seek shelter. The history of homelessness, social problems, demographics, common clinical issues, and intervention/future interventions will be explored to determinate how homelessness is caused and how it can diminish with time. Homelessness has been around for some time and is increasing with time. Homelessness was noticed soon after the Great Depression, which caused many people to lose his or hers home. “During the Great Depression in the 1930, many families were no longer able to afford their homes and It is thought that over two million people were homeless at this time and suffered severely from hunger and extreme poverty” (American History Of Homelessness, 2011). The Great Depression was an era of life where the stock market crashed and many where out of jobs and many lost their home. “The Great Depression began in October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment” (The Great Depression, 2013). When the Great Depression occurred...

...of Los Angeles: Homelessness Marqueta Oliver BSBO1ELEG6 10/29/2014 Paul Korzeniowski The True Face of Los Angeles: Homelessness Even though some people believe that tourism is a more important focus in Los Angeles than poverty, Homelessness is a crisis in Los Angeles because it affects everyone and reducing homelessness will improve the economy. Homelessness in our nation affects our, communities, economics and families at large. Being a native Angelino, I grew up not realizing that homelessness is an epidemic. I did not understand why there were so many homeless people, nor did I think of seeing panhandlers asking for money and food as a crisis, but I viewed it as “normal”. I always knew local transients by name and would try to help with spare change or a meal when I could. I had no idea of the staggering statistics of homelessness in my community; I didn’t understand the effects of homelessness on our economy and that the alarming rate of poverty level in my metropolitan city, affects us all. By focusing more attention, resources and time to housing our poverty-stricken communities in the long run it would cost less and would also create a more humane society. In the beautiful city of Los Angeles, tourists from all over world fill the cities top attraction sites daily. What most tourist may not know is that every morning before dawn, Los Angeles has a long history of using police to control public spaces by limiting the appearance of homelessness in the city. While...

...Picture This: A Snapshot of Homelessness David Mello HCA430: Special Populations Instructor: Monica Vargas May 2, 2015 Picture This A Snapshot of Homelessness Imagine if you will, for one moment, a reflection of your daily life. For most, it began like any other day; you awoke from your warm and comfortable bed, showered, chose your outfit for the day, ate breakfast, and then went to work or school. As the day came to end, after earning a solid days wage, you went home to a nice warm dinner ready on the table, a bed with fresh linens awaited your tired and heavy eyes, and for the rest of the evening and into the night you slept on a pillow of dreams. This is in essence the American dream is it not? To have the basic needs that to some may come as a surprise, many Americans do not have. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, “In January 2014, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2015). Many people would be in agreement that the above noted agenda is fairly normal; shelter, food, clothing, education, and family are all blessings and amenities that we take for granted but nonetheless are things that every individual deserves to have. Unfortunately, these are things that many people must suffer without. Scholarly research that spans over the course of two decades has continually and firmly established the emergence and persistence of indigent and homeless...

...Homelessness and poverty continues to be a problem across Canada and around the world. Homelessness is described as ‘the situation of an individual or family without stable, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect, means and ability of acquiring it’ (Gaetz, Donaldson, Richter, & Gulliver, 2013, p.4). Homelessness can result from mental, cognitive, physical or behavioural challenges, or may result from societal barriers and discrimination (Gaetz et al., 2013). Gaetz, Gulliver, & Richter (2014) states that declining wages, reduced benefit levels including pensions and social assistance and a shrinking supply of affordable housing have placed more and more Canadians at risk of homelessness. According to recent estimates, each...
