...most proven solar thermal electric technology. This is primarily due to nine large commercial-scale solar power plants, the first of which has been operating in the California Mojave Desert since 1984. These plants, which continue to operate on a daily basis, range in size from 14 to 80 MW and represent a total of 354 MW of installed electric generating capacity. Large fields of parabolic trough collectors supply the thermal energy used to produce steam for a Rankine steam turbine/generator cycle. Figure 1. Solar/Rankine parabolic trough system schematic [1]. Plant Overview Figure 1 shows a process flow diagram that is representative of the majority of parabolic trough solar power plants in operation today. The collector field consists of a large field of single-axis tracking parabolic trough solar collectors. The solar field is modular in nature and is composed of many parallel rows of solar collectors aligned on a north-south horizontal axis. Each solar collector has a linear parabolic-shaped reflector that focuses the sun’s direct beam radiation on a linear receiver located at the focus of the parabola. The collectors track the sun from east to west during the day to ensure that the sun is continuously focused on the linear receiver. A heat transfer fluid (HTF) is heated as it circulates through the receiver and returns to a series of heat exchangers in the power block where the fluid is used to 5-24 SOLAR PARABOLIC TROUGH generate high-pressure superheated steam...

All rights reserved. Copyright © Siemens AG 2009. All rights reserved. 1 Abstract Clean and cost-effective power generation is of paramount importance to cope with the challenges imposed by an increasing energy demand throughout the world. Investment cost and fuel costs are the main contributors to the cost of electricity. In recent years, costs associated with CO2 emissions have attracted more and more attention due to its political awareness. The efficiency of the power plant as one key value affects both the fuel costs and the amount of CO2 emitted to the environment. As coal is more abundant in many parts of the world, coal prices are less volatile and more stable than natural gas prices. But larger CO2 emissions increase the need for more efficient coal-based power generation. Ultra supercritical (USC) steam power plants meet notably the requirements for high efficiencies to reduce both fuel costs and emissions as well as for a reliable supply of electric energy at low cost. Recent developments in steam turbine technology and high-temperature materials allowed for significant efficiency gains. Siemens has more than fifteen years of...

...Nuclear Power Plant Design for the United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates (also referred to as the UAE or the Emirates) is a relatively young country that has established a powerful world economy in a short period of time. After breaking ties from the United Kingdom just over four decades ago, the UAE has quickly developed one of the most appealing economies for foreign investment in Western Asia. The Emirates’ largest cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are significant business gateways between the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Leveraging its prime geographical location and plentiful oil and natural gas reserves, the UAE has endeavored to develop its economy to the point that “today, [the Emirates] feels proud of [its] world-class and highly-ranked sea and air ports, which have strongly positioned the UAE as a main hub for trade and travel worldwide,” according to UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed. This improvement-centric mindset coupled with strategic reinvestment in infrastructure sets the United Arab Emirates on a path towards long-term global impact in many business indices. ...NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN KUDANKULAM What is Nuclear Power? Nuclear power, or Nuclear energy, is the use of exothermic nuclear processes, to generate useful heat & electricity. The term includes the following heat producing processes – nuclear fission, nuclear decay and nuclear fusion. Uses 1. Nuclear power is a low carbon method of producing electricity & in 2011 nuclear power provided 10% of the world's electricity. 2. Many military and some civilian (such as some icebreaker) ships use nuclear marine propulsion, a form of nuclear propulsion. 3. A few space vehicles have been launched using full-fledged nuclear reactors: the Soviet RORSAT series and the American SNAP -10 A. 4. Both Fission and fusion appear promising for space propulsion applications, generating higher mission velocities with less reaction mass. (Due to the much higher energy density of nuclear reactions: some 7 orders of magnitude (10,000,000 times) more energetic than the chemical reactions which power the current generation of rockets). 5. International research is continuing into the use of nuclear fusion, and additional uses of process heat such as hydrogen production (in support of a hydrogen economy), desalinizing sea water, and for use in district heating systems. What is Nuclear Reactor? A nuclear reactor is a device to initiate and control a sustained nuclear chain reaction. Nuclear reactors are used at nuclear power plants for generating...

...venture between DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) and TECOM (Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone) to provide efficient District Cooling Services (DCS) to developments in Dubai and the surrounding region. The purpose of existence of Empower is to achieve Dubai’s goal towards sustainability. According to share holders, Empower formation was mainly to play an important role in the growth sustainability of Dubai which is modern era fastest developing city of the world. Empowers district cooling services significantly reduces both energy costs and the environmental impact by reducing the amount of power required and increasing efficiency. Empower is formed with the vision to save energy for future generations to come. When Dubai started working towards it Strategic Goals of 2015, lots of initiatives are taken by Government of Dubai towards construction of prestigious projects. In Middle East Air conditioning is not a luxury rather a need & necessary. Dubai predicted increase in population and need for A/c was increasing which in turn was creating demand of Electrical Energy, but Dubai wants to save energy in its growth towards sustainability. Since major energy consumption was predicted through A/C Empower was created to Save Energy on a Special Decree from the ruler of Dubai. What is District Cooling? District cooling means the centralized production and distribution of cooling energy. Chilled water is delivered via an underground insulated pipeline to office, industrial...

...ABTRACT This project paper studies the potential of hydroelectric energy as a way to effectively generate, use and store renewable energy through the clean gravitational potential energy of stored water. Nuclear and coal fired plants could do change power output to achieve demand but at extremely high maintenance cost. Nuclear plants also being a good source of continuous energy has a high chance of posing hazard to the environment. Coal and fossil fuel fired power plants on the other hand cannot be depended on because the source will diminish someday. Therefore, alternative methods have to be explored in order to find a renewable and sustainable energy for the future generations. This project paper will study the benefits of hydroelectric energy as a potential and important energy source for a sustainable future. INTRODUCTION 1.0 Hydropower Hydropower is a renewable energy source based on the natural water cycle. Hydropower is the most mature, reliable and cost-effective renewable power generation technology available. Hydropower schemes often have significant flexibility in their design and can be designed to meet base-load demands with relatively high capacity factors, or have higher installed capacities and a lower capacity factor, but meet a much larger share of peak demand. Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source, and it produces around 16 % of the world’s...
