During this past weekend when Prof. Parkhurst sent all the information regarding service learning and I went ahead and started to look at Chapman Hostice’s website I started to think how fragile life is. Reading about how we are going to interact with patients that have a terminal illness and where given a life expectancy of six months is somewhat difficult to process. I think we all hope that, if God permits, we will grow old and then finally rest in peace until God’s second coming, but one of my fears regarding this subject is getting to my first service learning and finding out the patient I will be helping is my age or younger. How am I going to react to that? Talking from a religious point of view, why did God decide a child or young adult should leave this earth so early? And trying to look at it from another lens, what bad karma or situation was this person in that he or she now faces a terminal illness? I hope that during my service at Chapman Hostice I put away any kind of awkward doubts and just focus on the patient. I am willing to provide any service needed in order to better the remaining quality of life for the individual or group of people I will be serving. Maybe if I was in a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate a total stranger taking time of his or her life to help me live a good life. As we were told during orientation, patients are not afraid of dying but rather fear pain and any other burden that the dying process entails. I hope this not only turns into a learning experience but rather a life-changing

...Participating in JEP will allow me to reflect about the different aspects of education and the community while learning about myself in the process. Service learning will help me develop through the awareness of the community, giving me a deeper understanding about the ethical, legal and moral aspects of service as well as helping me apply my academics to real world scenarios. First, I would like to address the awareness of the community that I will gain by working with JEP. Working in the University Park neighborhood will allow me to see the different social and ethnic factors that surround this area of Los Angeles. Although I am local to Los Angeles, the part of Los Angeles I grew up in contrasts in many ways from the University Park neighborhood. I grew up in an area with many residential streets that were safe to roam around even at late hours, where fast food wasn’t readily available, where the crime rate wasn’t high and where diversity wasn’t as culturally sound. By partaking in this service learning project, I will be able to relate and be more sensitive to the type of community that this part of Los Angeles presents. I will also be able to understand the type of environment that the students I am working with are coming from. The environment in which someone grows up in influences the way a person thinks, their beliefs, their morals as well as their ability to overcome obstacles. As I am working in this neighborhood, I will be more aware about how the communities are...

...How to Guide for REFLECTION ------------------------------------------------------------- How to Guide for REFLECTION The National Service-Learning Cooperative ServeAmerica K-12 Clearinghouse Pennsylvania Institute for Environmental and Community Service Learning Northeast Regional Technical Assistance Center Compiled by Lorraine Parrillo Cooperative/Clearinghouse Coordinator Northeast Regional Technical Assistance Center December 5, 1994 Used with their permission INTRODUCTION This module includes a summary of materials currently used to support reflection in the service learning movement. Crucial information presented includes: 1. Introductory materials on Reflection by Diane Hedin and Dan Conrad 2. Reflective teaching techniques using eleven different forms of reflection rather than just using journals and asking how participants feel about service 3. Basic critical thinking skills that may be used in reflection sessions 4. Bibliography Reflection Reflective learning techniques are not the lone providence of service activities. All thinking and dialogue requires some form of reflection if learning is to take place. Individuals need time and reconsideration of events to put facts and ideas into sequence and eventually into a better understanding as to what happened during a specific event. Everyone in their life-time will be required to repeat this process endlessly. Nevertheless, schools do little...
