Being principal for a day would be a profound experience; and it would be difficult to think of what exactly I would do as there are so many different possibilities. Issues such as lunch quality and prices, school hours, teaching techniques, and discipline along with a vast array of other areas that need attention come to mind. I would not be able to do everything, but I would do my best to touch on the issues that deserve focus. This essay will explain some of the things I would attempt to accomplish as principal for a day. One of the first things I would alter are the hours of the school day. I believe that with the demands such as a heavy workload and extracurricular activities, school hours should be made shorter and more flexible to accommodate these things that are expected of kids. Doctors recommend a minimum of 8 hours of sleep for children and teenagers. Because of these facts, making school start later and end earlier would help ensure kids will have more time for rest and recuperation. This would in turn require the school year to be longer, but I believe it would be a more effective way to get students to perform at a higher level as they will be better rested and better equipped to meet the demands of a strenuous school day. Another topic of interest as being the principal for a day would be a focus on school lunches. Students seem to have a high demand for more appealing lunches from the cafeteria. Items such as nutrition, quality, and prices would all be taken into consideration. In the lunch room currently there are always complaints of lunches being “gross” or “nasty”, and that is absolutely unacceptable. In schools such as Brooklyn, many Children come from families that are less fortunate and therefore may not be able to afford the cost of lunches consistently at higher prices.
