...Sustainability and Ethics in Accounting : Waste Management Inc. Accounting Fraud The Business Dictionary defines "ethics" as the basic concepts and fundamental principles of decent human conduct. Most definitions agree with this one ; however, these principles are subject to personal and societal points of view that might differ depending on the context and individuals. Due to this subjectivity, codes of conduct have been created to ensure the application of discipline and morality not only personally but also profesionally. In the world of business, the decency of businessmen is constantly questioned as a result of worldwide scandals that have highlighted the lack of ethical standards and the breach of codes of conducts in numerous corporations. Specifically, accountants are often accused of poor financial management and fraud. Among the different cases of accounting malpractice, the Waste Management Inc. hoax is one of the most famous ones and it is usually used as an example to illustrate the decay of values in some of the biggest, most powerful entreprises. In 1968, Waste Management Inc. was founded by entrepreneurs Wayne Huizenga, Dean Buntrock and Larry Beck to provide waste and environmental services such as recycling, hazardous material collection, hauling, treatment and disposal of garbage. The company owns 26,000 collection and transfer vehicles and along with its competitor Republic Services, Inc. it handles more than half of the trash collection in the United...

...The Apple Way Jordan Turner Dr. David Wallace Marketing Principles and Managament December 6th, 2015 Jordan Turner Marketing Write-Up Dr. David Wallave 12/06/15 The Apple Way In the world we live in today, in which society revolves around technology, it is no surprise that one of the most successful companies happens to be in that industry. Over the years, Apple has separated itself as the leading competitor in the technological industry. However, Apple didn’t accomplish this feat over night. Over time, Apple has composed a successful marketing plan that has enabled them to corner the industry and consistently remain at the top in the market place. The article that I have chosen to dissect discusses the components and tools in the market place that Apple has utilized in order to maintain success. This article comes from Fast Company Magazine which is a magazine that is dedicated to reporting how growing companies and entrepreneurs are doing what they do. The first marketing concept that the article centers around is the concept of promotion. Promotion refers to raising customer awareness of product of brand, generating sales, and creating brand loyalty. Apple has a very unique way of promoting new products and the buzz that surround them. Unlike most companies, Apple is quite secretive about promoting products that aren’t yet on the market place. Apple never sets concrete deadlines and provides virtually no new information about new products or the release...

It is a violation of federal copyright law to reproduce part or all of this publication without written permission from FocusInvestor.com. The goal of this short article is to show the investor examples of how companies can manipulate their reported earnings. This article also provides information on what warnings signs to look for. The article has taken information from a variety of sources in order to provide the reader with a quick overview of accounting red flags. Focused investors practicing portfolio concentration should be particularly aware of these issues. I have written the article for the individual investor who has an intermediate level of accounting knowledge. That being said I believe the beginning investor with only a moderate understanding of accounting will benefit from a close reading of this article if for no other reason that to understand what elements of accounting they should study more closely. While this article focuses on accounting issues all investors should investigate the management team of a company before investing since the management team has such a strong influence of any companies operations and how they report their results. To this end I would strongly urge all investors to first study the way management treats their shareholders. Do they provide...

It is an American multinational retail corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. Almost everything can be found in Wal-Mart stores and it has everything a homemaker can ever think of. It is arguably the largest retail chain that deals with millions of product ranging from furnitures, clothes, groceries, books, movies, electronic, jewelries, baby products and much more. In the 1960s through the 1970s, companies realized strong engineering, design, and manufacturing functions were strong market strategy keys to create and capture customer loyalty. As the demand for new products rose in the 1980s, these market requirements were to increase their flexibility and responsiveness to adapt existing products and processes or to develop new ones in order to meet customer needs. As manufacturing improved in the 1990s, managers began noticing material and service inputs involving suppliers and their major impact on an organization‘s ability to meet customer needs. As a result of these changes, organizations...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
