...ABORTION; PRO-LIFE OR PRO-CHOICE Some people believe that abortion is immoral and some people don’t. Morality is an interpersonal conflict over a decision between right and wrong (“Morality”). The question is what reasons people have for their beliefs for and against abortion and whether those reasons are reasonable or not? There are two main groups of people in the case of abortion, pro-life supporters and pro-choice supporters. On the one hand, pro-life supporters, those who think abortion is not right, consider a fertilized human egg a human being from the moment of conception. Therefore, they refer to abortion as murder. On the other hand, the pro-choice supporters, those in favor of abortion, have a different perspective. They believe that a fetus is a human only after birth. The moral difference between these groups encompasses one issue. That is “At what stage is a fertilized egg considered a human being?” According to Peter Singer, there are four general stages that the pro-lifers and the pro-choicers argue about in terms of the standing of a fetus. They are: “birth, viability, quickening and the onset of consciousness” (138). The arguments made by the two groups for and against each of these stages causes the standing of an embryo to be upgraded to that of a child in the long run, as Singer suggests (138). Thus, this paper will examine and analyze the four moral junctures for the status of the fetus -“birth, viability, quickening...

...ABORTION PRO CHOICE OR PRO LIFE April 11, 2013 PROFESSOR DANIEL HAYNES PHI 103 INFORMAL LOGIC Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy and expulsion of fetus from the uterus resulting in or cause by death of the embryo. The debate over the legal and ethical viability of abortion has been complicated by the lack of consensus in defining whether the developing embryo can be equated as human life. Many people are constantly debating whether or not abortion should be allowed or not. I believe in Pro Choice which believes that woman should have the right to decide if she wants to abort a baby or not. In this paper, I will look at abortions critically and express why abortion should be legal and be left us to a woman to decide. The goal is to point out reason why one might choose abortion. While one is Pro-Choice in the case of abortion, and feels that is should be legal and the choice of a woman. Upon reading the statement on what is pro-choice and how and when abortion is legalized. I will go over why I feel that abortions should be legal. Unwanted pregnancies can be very stressful for woman. Whether or not the woman has the right to have an abortion or not is a controversial subject. Prolife members believe that abortions are seriously wrong and killing a fetus is killing a person. However, woman should have the right to have an abortion for several reasons. Woman should have the right to make decision for their own bodies. Woman should be able to have an...

...RUNNING HEAD: PRO CHOICE 1 Pro Choice or Pro Life? Richard W. Emmendorfer PHI 103 Dr. Stephen Carter 28 October 2013 Abortion, sometimes viewed as a permanent solution to a temporary problem, should be or remain legal for specific cases involving victims of rape, significant medical conditions that would jeopardize the safety of the birth or guarantee severe birth deformities. Unwed adolescent parents are who are deemed unfit or who would not be able to provide adequate care should also be determined as a qualifying circumstances. Victims of rape would have a constant reminder of the experience weighing heavily on their mental health and would hold prejudice toward this child versus other children. An article from The Nation (2009) details that Regina Alves, a psychologist at a domestic violence center in Brazil, insists that when it comes to working with a victim of violence, “what matters is what she says.” (Sokoloff-Rubin, 2009) A testimony from a woman who was made pregnant from a rape when she was 15 accounts how different the child resulting from the rape is compared to her other children. "My first husband verbally abused her. I never have had, and still don't have, the maternal feelings for her that I have for my other kids. We're good friends and I so love her, but it's like we're sisters. I wish she could have had a more normal life.” (Meehan, 2013, p. 33) The mental stability of the victim and how the victim sees the child is through...

...Sanger.) Pro-Choice and Pro-Life is a widely discussed topic in our society today, but there should not even be a discussion as an abortion should always be available for women who need it. There are many emotional, physical, health, and persona reasons for a woman to get an abortion; that society and the government ultimately should not have the say so on. The number one reason women have an abortion is due to lack of readiness financially. Now, you may be telling yourself that does not give a woman the right to “kill” her baby or maybe you are thinking that she should suffer the consequences of her action; but are you, as a pro-lifer, personally going to provide for that baby? Are you going...

...Americans are divided in half when it comes to being pro-choice and pro-life in regards to abortion. In 2010 a national survey was conducted, forty five percent of Americans were pro-choice and forty seven percent was pro-life. Individuals who oppose abortion believe that human lives should be protected. Pro-choicer’s think differently and feel that the decision should be left to the mother about what she wants to do with her body. The Gallup Poll, which was also conducted in 2010 shows that thirty eight percent of Americans believed that abortion is acceptable and fifty percent stated it was morally wrong. A small portion of approximately nine percent of people said it depended on the situation, such as if one was rape. The topic of abortion in the U.S. has prompted many national...

...Abortion has been about for many years; there’s people who support the right for abortion and those who don’t. Abortion kills a human being no matter if it’s considered a baby or if it’s still not at that stage you are still killing a human being. Review of Literature Those who are pro-life say that human life begins at fertilization and abortion is killing of an innocent human being. There’s no need for abortion when couples who cannot have kids of their own are waiting for their opportunity to adopt a child. The ones who are pro-life accept abortion only for certain situations such as in rape, or when a woman's life is at risk but no matter the situation there is no need to kill a child that someone wants. People who aren’t able to get...

...Abortion. It’s the word many people hate to discuss because of the controversial viewpoints on the subject. There is the pro-life movement, where people believe that abortion is murder and is many times related to religion. Then there is the pro-choice movement, where people think that women should have the rights to their own bodies and are the only people who can make such decisions. Both sides of the spectrum argue back and forth about the topic, but nobody can come to a clear consensus on things. I personally stand on the pro-choice end of things. There are many reasons why I believe what I do, such as rape and incest cases, financial situations, and medical emergencies. Abortion is a touchy subject no matter where you stand on the issue, so we...

...Abortion - The ending of a pregnancy before birth. This is the book definition of a very substantial topic that has been gaining a lot of attention recently. People in the U.S.A. have been arguing whether or not abortion should be legal. They are separated into two different groups; pro-life and pro-choice. The pro-life side believes that personhood begins at conception, therefore considering abortions “the immoral killing of an innocent human being”. The pro-choice side believes that having an abortion is a right that should not be limited by governmental or religious authority. The pro-choice side also believes that personhood is separate from human life, as the fetus has not yet been able to experience life. Abortion is justified because it is the woman's own body and she could do what she likes, the woman could be living in poverty, and adoption just isn’t a viable alternative to abortion....

...In the movie “The Life of PI” we meet a writer (Rafe Spall) chatting with Adult Pi (Irrfan Khan). He is beginning his story, but first, he starts of telling us how he got his name. His uncle (whom he calls "mama-ji") was a frequent swimmer thanks to his large chest and skinny legs. He went to a pool in Paris that was "so clear, you could make your coffee there." The pool was called Piscine Molitor, and therefore, Pi's full name was Piscine Molitor Patel. However, as a child, other people had a hard time pronouncing it, and the kids would make fun of him by pronouncing it "Pissing”. Patel was getting picked on so much that he abbreviates his name to Pi, and is shown in math class having full knowledge of the entire equation for pi. As a child, he was fascinated with religion. He first came to know Krishna from a story his mother told him, and he is initially raised Hindu. One day, his brother Ravi dares him to drink holy water from a church, in which he met with a priest who explained to him the story of Jesus Christ, he was also introduced to Islam and Allah. Pi tells the writer about Richard Parker, their Bengal tiger. He was named as such because of a mix-up in the paperwork when he was brought in; things take a big turn in Pi's life when his father announces that the city council is no longer supporting the zoo, so they are taking the zoo and moving to Canada. At night, PI hears a storm that was going on outside the ship he goes out to witness it going on, in excitement he...

...Pro-Life The birth of a child is no mistake or mishap, and their life is no fluke of nature. Soon to be parents may not have planned to have a child, but God did. He was not at all surprised by the conception of a new child. In fact, God expected it; He planned this for the “parents to be” a long time before the baby was even conceived by its parents. God thought about that child and loved them before his or her first heat beat. It was not fate, nor chance, nor luck, nor coincidence that you are breathing at this very moment. Everyone is alive because God wanted to create them! The Bible says, “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.” Abortion is the termination of pregnancy before birth, resulting in, or accompanied by, the death of the fetus. It has become one of the most widely debated ethical issues of our time. Considering what is ethical and what is legal in terms of abortion becomes very complex. The ethical concerns that revolve around the abortion issue are those that encompass a great many ideals – both religious and personal – that have to do with an individual’s concept of right and wrong. To some, the ethical implications mean allowing the woman her right to choose; to others, it is no different than murder. Do you consider something with a beating heart a living creature? Likely, before a woman even has knowledge of being pregnant, at five weeks, a baby’s heart is already formed and beating. Therefore that would make abortion a form of murder...

...Research Paper: My Thought on Abortions On October 1, 2008, butterflies floated around in my stomach all day while walking the halls of Hillcrest High. I knew something wasn’t quite right. Afterschool, my boyfriend and I made a trip to Wal-Mart. I fidgeted with my fingers the whole ride there. We purchased a Clear Blue pregnancy test. When we arrived at his house, the both of us made our way to the downstairs bathroom. As the urine landed on the Clear Blue stick, something told me that this will determine my future. Would I go off to college? Would I have to stay home to care for a baby?? I contemplated. “Am I pregnant???” was the biggest question of them all. My boyfriend and I waited impatiently for the results to appear on the stick. Hot tears began to roll down my cheeks before I could view the results. My boyfriend gasped. The look on his face told me that our lives would be change forever. Or would it? The word ‘abortion’ was the only thing on my mind for the rest of the evening. I cried and sobbed as my boyfriend did his best to console me until I fell asleep. The next morning I woke up early. Before I could even say “good morning” I told my boyfriend that I wanted an abortion. He stared at me for what seemed like a century. – Weeks had passed and I kept putting the abortion off for a later date. The thought of actually aborting didn’t sit well with me. One evening after school, I called Planned Parenthood to set up an appointment to have an abortion. Come to find...

...Are you pro-life or pro-choice? Not a commonly brought up topic in daily conversations, even though it has been going on for centuries. Yes, centuries. A person would think that by now this debate would be over, based on that almost everyone has the choice or right to do as they desire. Will this debate ever stop? Probably not, but could there be a possible common ground? Maybe. Even though I am not the one to suggest this solution, but I plan to discuss my belief, pro-choice, and its strengths and weaknesses. To begin, under the law we all have equal liberty for what is permitted, abortion being one of those permissions or rights. As a positive and commonly agreed on approach, all woman as have rights. These rights guarantee that a woman can...

...According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term abortion simply means “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus” (abortion). The main arguments of abortion are at what point does life begin for the child and whether or not this action is inhumane. Many medical professionals believe life begins at conception, which places abortion into the murder category. Abortion is very well-known throughout the world today and is becoming more prevalent in our society; the support of the pro-life movement is needed to eliminate this problem. Abortion has been discussed recently in our everyday news, but there were no specific laws set before the 19th century. It...

...Pro-Life The topic of abortion is a highly controversial issue in today's society. For years, abortion has been talked about and laws have changed due to new discoveries and new ideas purposed on this issue. Between laws, cases, and women’s rights, no one has truly come up with a solid explanation for whether abortion is right or wrong, without a “what if” that questions it. Some people feel that abortion is simply cold-blooded murder, because the fetus is a human being from the moment of conception. However, others would argue that a fetus is merely insubstantial matter, and that it depends entirely on its mother's body for survival, with no real life of its own. This is the argument between someone who is “pro-life” and someone who is “pro-choice.” For many years women were denied their rights and could not even vote. Today, most women are given the choice to have an abortion or have the baby. As a female, I do believe it is important to have my choices, but abortion is not one of them. The definition of abortion is “the termination of a pregnancy by the removal of a fetus or embryo from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death.” To me, this is a nice way of saying “killing an unborn child.” Not only is killing an innocent child, unborn or not, morally wrong, but it is extremely dangerous mentally and physically to the mother. For one, it does not matter the age of a fetus or embryo, it is to become a life of its own. No one has the right to take a gift that God has...

...Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life People love to argue. Not in a screaming at each other because the peanut butter lid was left off again kind of way, but with intentions of being progressive. With a little bit of structure to an argument, it ends up being more of a debate and is usually enjoyable, especially if you win. Since people have been debating for so long, and like to do it, you would think that there would be a surefire way to come to a mutual understanding. However, certain topics will be debated until the end of time before there is ever any sort of resolution. When it comes to abortion, seldom is somebody without an opinion; and others could not be more rooted in their beliefs. In order to form an objective opinion it is imperative to understand both sides of a debate and then make a decision based on the facts. On the matter of abortion, the logic behind being pro-choice is more objective and therefore the stronger viewpoint. The first step in choosing a stance on abortion is to understand what the different beliefs are. There are two main beliefs on the matter: pro-life and pro-choice. A recent poll shows that about 51 percent of Americans are pro-life while 42 percent are pro-choice (Operation). According to the world’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, the mission of the pro-life belief is “to protect and defend the most fundamental right of humankind, the right to life of every innocent human being from the beginning of life to natural death” (NRLC)...
