...Problems Facing Human Services Clients Lizabeth J. Justus - Routson BSHS – 305 September 18, 2014 Dr. Robert Vado The Range of Problems Facing Human Service Clients Client problems are rarely limited to just one, single issue. One problem alone can lead to other problems and the human service helper should always keep this in mind so that specific helping skills can be implemented to serve the clients’ needs. These problems can range from housing, food, physical or mental illness, alcohol abuse, domestic abuse, Veteran’s issues and child or family issues. All of these issues are multi-faceted and can be very difficult to help with. (R. Woodside & T. McClam, 2011) Assisting with client’s problems requires gaining the trust of the client. This is important for gathering information so the helper can give the best and most effective help they can. (R. Woodside & T. McClam, 2011) to do this, a human service professional uses helping skills to assist their clients. Some of the basic skills are verbal and non-verbal communication, and listening and responding. These are the foundations to the human service professional and client relationship. There is no one person with one single problem which is shy it is so important that the “whole person” is helped. Some of the problems that plague clients today are innumerable, but I will attempt to elaborate on a few. Human Service workers ensure that children live in safe homes and have their basic needs met. Helping parents to take care of their children may include in assisting with applications for food stamps or low-income housing and helping them to locate appropriate childcare. Housing or the lack of housing is one of the issues facing Human Service clients today. Many people are without homes for various reasons, such as not having money to pay, which means they are jobless, or not making enough to cover their living expenses. A client that is homeless can be faced with many other issues simply because they have no place to live. Another challenge for Human Service clients is depression. Depression can come about when a client is not able to adequately live with the necessities of life and seem to have no means in which to acquire them. When a client cannot provide for him or herself, it is detrimental to their well-being and may bring on a bout of depression...

...unique individuals with unique problems. It is important that a helper be able to identify the types of problems that a client can experience. Understanding which type or types of problems a client is facing will aid the helper in providing assistance to the client. It is necessary for a helper to possess effective communication skills which will foster a strong helper client environment. The first of the five problems facing human service clients is, developmental. "...experts in developmental psychology suggest that human development is a continuous process and that there are certain phases and stages that individuals experience during the life span (Trotter & Startwood, 2007)." This means that if for some reason a child missies one of these milestones of development, certain issues could arise in adulthood. An example that most are familiar with, is the connection between crawling, speech, and fine motor skills. The act of crawling, and exploring the world from this perspective is important to the childes development. Another example is socializing a child. When a child is raised strictly within the house hold with no contact with other children, there is a lack of development in the child's social skills. A deficit in these skills could hinder the child as an adult in interacting with other children. The second problem facing human service clients is, situational. Situational problems are the result of an event occurring in the clients life. These events range...

Working in the human service field can accumulate a wide variety of problems and issues from a range of clients. Due to the variety of clients that human service professionals work with, the issues vary depending on the type of client. ...always been about problem solving. I believed that it was merely about working together in teams to analyze a client’s problems and to provide and aid in the implementation of an effective solution for them. However, after reading the two articles, I discovered that it was a lot more than just analysis and problem solving. Consulting consists of much broader and complex roles and responsibilities that are constantly evolving. I often believed that consultants were hired to resolve problems that were presented to them. However, more often than not, clients need help to actually define the real issue at hand first. Resolving a wrong problem definitely does not aid a client in moving forward. Consultants thus need to constantly explore various factors while working on a problem that is given by the client. By doing so, the definition of the problem might change to get to the crux of the issue that the company is facing, which results in more effective services rendered. Several skill sets are required in consulting and accurate analysis to me was always the most vital. These articles however, educated me that it was important to be persuasive and convincing as well. Convincing a client however, does not mean deceiving them, but rather establishing an agreement that effective action needs to be taken by the whole organization to resolve the issues at hand. Ultimately, the goal is to recommend an effective solution that is accepted and willingly implemented by the client. Nonetheless...

It is our goal to take these clients in and take all the negative in life that they are facing and strategize, categorize, and solve whatever problems we are able to. Ultimately coming to us is the first step that they have taken to becoming self-sufficient again, whether they see that or not. And as a human services worker, you have to realize that each client coming in has their own unique needs and goals that they hope to get out of this newfound relationship, and it is our job to do whatever we can to meet these goals, even if it means referring the client elsewhere. Given all of this, I will be only briefly touching on some areas of issues that human services clients face.
