...Which Is the Better Dog Food? The commercial dog food industry has been in existence for almost one hundred and fifty years. It affords a convenience to pet owners where by they only need to scoop out dry kibble in a bowl or open a can of pet food, without any additional food or supplement, pet owners do not know what ingredients are being used in the food. Many have relied on the dog food industry to use quality products in manufacturing their food. However, to their surprise, in some cases at the demise of pets this has not been the case. In light of all the pet food recalls since 1995 and more recently in March 2007, where Menu Foods recalled more 100 brands including Iams, Eukanuba, Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Mighty Dog and many store brands including Wal-Mart. Owners have began to take a more proactive approach as to learn what ingredients are in the product, by reading and understanding the label on the packaging and making a educated choice between the slew of brands whether it be dry kibble or canned food. Some owners are scrapping commercial dog foods all together and feeding their pet a homemade diet. These owners are convinced that the dogs health fare much better on these types of diets because before the existence of commercial dog foods pets ate what people consumed in the form of leftovers or table scraps or if they were in the wild they hunted their own food that provided the pet with natural protein and nutrients found in raw meat and plants...

...Tala Hughes Mrs. Martin DC English Comp. 111 20 November 2015 “Ground Zero” Paragraph Summaries 1. Berne is visiting Manhattan’s financial district for the first time to give respect to the tragedy that took place there at the World Trade Center. 2. There were people from all over the world and of all ages there to visit the site. 3. Although it may seem like you are looking at nothing, you are really looking at the absence of what used to be. 4. To a tourist, the site simply looks like a construction site. 5. Looking at the site even gives off the vibe that construction gives, of hope and curiosity. 6. Then your eyes adjust to the most striking part about the scene: the light. 7. Berne compares ground zero to a bowl of light, empty yet vast. What is missing becomes clearer as a watery glow from the light reflecting off the Hudson River covers everything. 8. Suddenly, she starts to see the tragedy, including the firefighters and the boarded windows. 9. Suddenly, the cemetery is visible, along with all of the personal belongings and headstones. 10. It takes time to see the tragedy and make sense of it all. 11. An old man near her is trying to explain to her son how he saw the site before the towers were even built. 12. It is clear many people are dissatisfied with being able to express only vague expressions. 13. ...To the Manager of Pet World: I am writing to express my frustrations with a recent experience I had at your store. One week ago, I purchased Paws dog food for my pet at this location. I was surprised at what happened when I got home and used this bag of dog food. Despite being on the shelf to be sold that day, this dog food had long ago expired. To be exact, it had expired six and a half months prior to the date it was purchased. Since the bag had been on the shelf, I had assumed the food was good and acceptable to feed to my pet. I soon realized this was not the case. After feeding my dog this food, she became violently ill, vomiting for hours on end. I was forced to take her to the vet, as she was dehydrated and required medicine. Thousands of dollars later, I realized that her sickness could most definitely be attributed to the expired dog food I had unknowingly fed her. I have been a loyal customer of Pet World’s since it opened six years ago and have never experienced any issues with your store. I am both bothered and concerned by the fact that expired food was on the shelves of the store, and I am now hesitant to trust the quality of other products at your store. This issue could have affected a number of other pets as well, and I just hope that none of them became as ill as mine did. I hope to hear back from you about this unfortunate incident. Please contact me as soon as possible at (998) 867-0987 or via email at jjay@email.com. Sincerely, John Jay...

...Decide – Smackey Dog Foods Inc Smackey Dog Foods, Inc. is a familiar story in terms of small business start-ups. They started in a family kitchen, experienced explosive growth, and have had some troubles handling the accounting and business side of the business. My firm, Keller CPA’s, does not have specific experience with auditing a dog food manufacturer, but we certainly have a good bit of experience with similar small business accounting and auditing issues. The first thing to address is the SEC’s role or influence over Smackey Dog Foods. Since Smackey is private there is not a direct oversight or reporting role for the SEC. Indirectly, however, they help establish GAAP and have a role in how the books should be maintained, how the officers should conduct business, and how Keller CPA’s determine they can accept the engagement, ie their independence (sec.gov). My firm is sending Pete, Ben, and Maureen to visit the client, assess the situation, and plan the audit. To plan the audit they will have to begin developing the audit strategy, identifying problem areas and specific areas where material misstatement might occur. In this case I would identify the forecasted sales numbers as one area due to Jill’s less-than-ideal management methods. Also, they will need to analyze the lawsuit and the lawsuit of their biggest buyer to get a feel for the risk associated with those. The audit plan will also include the nature of the business and what it does, a dog food manufacturing company...

...Scenario Smackey Dog Foods Inc.—Scenario Summary Smackey Dog Foods Inc. started in the kitchen of Sarah, Kim, and Jillian’s family home in the suburbs of Chicago. The three sisters initially bought the ingredients for their natural dog food recipes from the local grocery store. They used their dogs and the neighborhood dogs as their taste testers. Their dog food products were so good, the local kennels and veterinary offices were glad to distribute the sisters' products to their customers. Local demand increased significantly. Local pet stores and small grocery stores discovered the products and became distributors. The sisters moved the expanding business into a larger facility and hired a few more workers. Although their competitors’ sales were flat or declining, Smackey Dog Food Inc.’s sales were on a vertical climb! Sales were so good last year that the sisters opened a boutique division named Best Boy Gourmet, specializing in freshly manufactured, one-serving packages meant for consumption no later than 3 days after production. They sell this product at three times the cost of their other products and by special order only through their new website. Demand is high, but waste has been an issue. Sarah is the president and general manager of the operation. Sarah has been very proactive in growing the business. She has met with her banker to discuss expanding the facilities and equipment with another $150,000 loan. Their first loan for $150,000 was secured by the industrial-size...

...used, but few people know or realize that food could be just as damaging. Food is just like water, we need it to survive, but if it is used in excess it could be very damaging or deadly to the human body. America and the world have been getting larger and larger over the last thirty to forty years which has lead to health problems and will lead to decrease in life expectancy. So what has caused this shift from normal body fat to excess body fat? Many people believe that the increase in the world’s body fat is due to fast food and lack in exercise. Although these factors may be true there is more to that than one would think. Fast food and possessed foods are a main contributor to excess body fat as Andrew Martin writes in an article “Hardee’s restaurants recently scrapped almost its entire menu to focus on hefty sandwiches called Thickburgers--including the Double Bacon Cheese Thickburger, weighing in at two-thirds of a pound and 1,148 calories” (Martin, 2003, para. 1). This is just one example, of a burger that is more than half the recommended 2000 calories that a person should intake in a day. As “Georgia Guldan, a nutritionist and associate professor at Chinese University's biochemistry department, said: "In general [Hong Kong has] in the past 20 years or so, as have other places around the world with our global food system, gone from a more nutritious traditional wholefood diet to a less nutritious diet with more processed foods (Ho, 2007, para. 8). With...

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...

...eat at fast-food restaurants. Cheap, tasty, and convenient, fast food is loaded with saturated fat and calories, and it's low in fiber and nutrients. Thanks in large part to fast food, half of America's adults and one-quarter of its children are obese, double the rate of a generation ago. Even some popular chicken nuggets, which many consumers consider a healthier alternative, are flavored with beef extract and contain twice as much fat, ounce for ounce, as a ham burger. Besides the long-term health risks of a high-fat, high-calorie diet, fast-food chains have indirectly changed the way cattle are fed, slaughtered, and processed, making meatpacking the most dangerous job in America and increasing the risk of large-scale food poisoning. In his new book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, Eric Schlosser describes fast food's hidden dangers. A Lifetime of Fast Food Although most of the health problems related to fast food aren't felt until middle age -- obesity and diabetes are at an all-time high --- the damage starts before children enter kindergarten. Hoping to shape eating habits, fast-food chains market heavily to children. About 96% of American school-aged children recognize Ronald McDonald, second only to Santa Claus. Almost every American child eats at a McDonald's® at least once a month. Fast food runs on cheap labor, usually supplied by teenagers. Child labor laws that restrict work schedules are often ignored at fast-food chains. Although...

...Processed Foods in the American Diet DeVry University Processed Foods in the American Diet According to the New York Coalitions for Healthy School Food, approximately 62 percent of American’s daily caloric intake come from processed foods. If you consider that twelve percent, in addition to that, comes from the “Plant Food” category, and even up to half of that may still be considered “processed” due to preservatives and freezing; that makes the food we consume to be up to 74 percent processed. Before processed foods, Americans had no choice but to eat whole, natural, raw foods. As our technology advanced, our need for food to not spoil grew as quickly. Though as preservatives, additives, and processed foods increased in our diet, the integrity of food declined. With our new abilities to package and preserve food, food came to have more and more preservatives and contain fewer nutrients. Processed foods should usually be avoided because, over time, they contribute to obesity and can lead to disease; in order to help avoid these problems, the public needs to be educated on the negative effects of most processed foods and they need to be made more aware of affordable healthy alternatives. Obesity is a problem in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control, 35.7% of adults are considered to be obese. The CDC also reports that obesity-related diseases or conditions are the second leading cause of death; some of these include: type 2 diabetes, heart...
