Observing nature through the magnifying glass of science, designers are able to learn principles and extract materials that form the basis of modern design engineering. From synthetic materials that resemble biological substances to computation that mimics neural processes, nature is driving design. Bionics is the science of application of biological systems found in nature to designing of engineering systems and modern technology. One of the most influential technological advancements of the 21st century in the field of robotics are bionic limbs.
Prosthetic limbs try to make life easier for the disabled, but it is merely replacing the missing part using something that feels artificial and is difficult to use. However, technology is blurring …show more content…
These are controlled by electrical pulses of muscles, recorded using electrodes which are transmitted wirelessly to motors in the bionic limb. The torques and forces exerted by the motor help produce the desired movement. This greatly decreases the time taken to adapt to using new prosthetic limbs as they feel natural. These synthetic limbs not only move like flesh and bones but can also feel and be controlled like flesh and bones.
As Bionic limbs are one the most revolutionary and influential technological innovations, I did a project at the Robotics Research Center, within the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore under the guidance of assistant professor Mr. Domenico Compolo.
The project helped me familiarize myself with the basics of robotics such as inverse kinematics, inverse dynamics, degrees of freedom, etc. I compared muscle activity from Electromyography (EMG) data obtained from actual muscle activity and a musculoskeletal model from OpenSim using Computed Muscle Control. I used motion capture system to track upper arm motions and used MATLAB to analyze and classify the data obtained. EMG helps us record electrical activity produced by muscles and can be used to obtain input for motors in bionic limbs.
