Protect Your Money:
Check Out Brokers and Investment Advisers

Tips for Checking Out Brokers and Investment
Federal or state securities laws require brokers, investment advisers, and their firms to be licensed or registered, and to make important information public. But it's up to you to find that information and use it to protect your investment dollars. The good news is that this information is easy to get, and one phone call or web search may save you from sending your money to a con artist, an unscrupulous financial professional, or a disreputable firm.
Before you invest or pay for any investment advice, make sure your brokers, investment advisers, and investment adviser representatives have not had run-ins with regulators or other investors. You also should check to see whether they are registered or licensed.
This is very important, because if you do business with an unregistered securities broker or a firm that later goes out of business, there may be no way for you to recover your money — even if an arbitrator or court rules in your favor.

Brokers and Brokerage Firms
The Central Registration Depository (CRD) is a computerized database that contains information about most brokers, their representatives, and the firms they work for. For instance, you can find out if brokers are properly licensed in your state and if they have had run-ins with regulators or received serious complaints from investors. You'll also find information about the brokers' educational backgrounds and where they've worked before their current jobs.
You can ask your state securities regulator or the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) to provide you with information from the CRD. Because your state securities regulator may provide more comprehensive information from the CRD than FINRA, especially when it comes to investor complaints, you may want to check with your

Ransomware: the Latest Craze

...around for over 10 years but has been gaining in popularity as the hackers’ latest way of extorting money from you. So, what is it? As the name implies, it’s malware (malicious software) which has kidnapped your computer and is holding it for ransom. It works like this. You click on an unsuspecting link from a web page, social networking site, email message or (lately) Skype instant message. This launches a program which then starts to encrypt/lock some or all of the files on your hard drive. In the meantime, you are shown a fake web page from the FBI, CIA or some other agency to make you believe you’re in legal trouble and could even face prosecution. They’ll use scare tactics such as telling you that your computer contains illegally downloaded files ranging anywhere from music and movies to child pornography. They will then ask you to pay money for them to unlock and restore your files. As you’ve already probably guessed, they won’t keep their promise. They’ve got your money and now can, and possibly will, sell your credit card info to other hackers and make even more money off of you. They have no reason to “help you out” so, don’t think for a minute that they will help even if you pay them. How can you protect yourself from malware? Keep all of your computer software up to date. Make sure that you have up-to-date firewall and antivirus software installed on your computer. Most importantly, don’t click on any suspicious links from web pages, emails or instant messages...

Financial Plan

...Financial Plan Ginger Talley AB104 Personal Financial Management Kaplan University Prof. Denise Schoenherr 07/12/2016 I have learned that I am going to have to do some more research and see how I can put some more money towards retirement. From reading the News Release on the ssa website the year that the funds are projected to become depleted I will just become eligible for early retirement and five years later eligible for full retirement and then I would need to work another three years to be able to survive retirement if I am depending on what I paid in from the time that I started working. It will be eight years after the money is depleted that I would need the money that I have been paying in since I was sixteen, that looks like I will never see. So if the money that they are taking out of what I earned is not going to be there when I need it then why am I having the government put aside money for me that will not be there?  I think they need to stop taking my money and let me put it into an account so that I can make sure that it will be there when I need it and not depend on the government to make sure that I get back what I have paid in because it looks to me like they are not going to be able to give me my money back. According to Mandell (2014) some retirees are fortunate to have sufficient regular income to meet their retirement needs. However, for most of us, only part of our needed income, most commonly Social Security, is protected against inflation. This...

Whistle Blower

...Ethics, values and beliefs all play a role in accounting. But when it comes being a whistleblower you can see where these things can start to conflict with one another. Even though there are laws to protect a whistle blower very few people do and those who do blow the whistle aren’t always happy after it’s done. At the same time those who do report do receive benefits and can say they truly have honesty and integrity. Ethics is more than just what’s right and wrong. What is right to one person can be considered wrong to another. Ethics are based off of what we know to be morally right or wrong. Smoking marijuana is wrong in the United States but considered ordinary or right in Amsterdam. Some ethical decisions go further than knowing what is the right thing to do, sometimes our emotions can get the best of us and leave us making poor decisions. When deciding the ethical thing to do in a situation you must set your emotions aside and base your decision on what you know or consider being right. Ethics is a large part of accounting. You are constantly faced with decisions where you need to decide the ethical thing to do. Whistleblowing involves the act of reporting wrongdoing within an organization to internal or external parties (Eaton & Akers, 2007).As a whistleblower your ethical decisions are what decide if you should blow the whistle. You know that adjusting numbers such as Enron did is wrong and unethical. Many people are afraid to blow the whistle though even if a...

...expectations. For example, a company’s profits may be hurt by a lawsuit, a change in management or some other event. * Interest Rate Risk: The risk caused by changes in the general level of interest rates in the marketplace. This type of risk is most apparent in the bond market because bonds are issued at specific interest rates. Generally, a rise in interest rates will cause a decline in market prices of existing bonds, while a decline in interest rates tends to cause bond prices to rise. For example, say you buy a 30-year bond today with a 6% annual yield. If interest rates rise, a new 30-year bond may be issued with an 8% annual yield. The price of your bond drops because investors aren’t willing to pay full value for a bond that yields less than the current rate of interest. * Market Risk: The risk that the value of your investment will decline as a result of market conditions. This type of risk is primarily associated with stocks. You might buy the stock of a promising or successful company only to have its market value fall with a generally falling stock market. * Market Risk - This is...

Skills That Should Be Taught in School

...Skills That Should Be Taught in Schools: How to put money in your pocket and keep it there. By: José R.G. Alvarado González Have you ever asked, why in the world didn’t they teach you about financial intelligence in high school? Jim Rohn said that “if they would have taught Wealth 101 and Wealth 102 in high school, I would’ve taken both courses.” I totally agree with him. Financial education, that is, practical, useful information that will put money in your pocket is hardly ever taught in most school systems. Instead, most of us were taught how to dissect some type of animal, like a frog (in my case it was a cat!). As it turned out, a lot of the information that was taught in high school has proven completely useless as far as putting money in my pocket. (Unless I decide to go to medical school and become a veterinarian!) The sad truth is that a lot of the stuff that they bombarded us with in high school seems to have been an attempt to group us into some kind of category. Children are usually taught to follow norms and procedures, comply with the status quo, and become slaves to the system. Parents have a responsibility for their children’s well being, which includes their education. Unfortunately, the lifestyles that are being led, has forced many parents to spend less time with their children. Thus, much of this responsibility is placed on our school system. Effective money management is a subject that is neglected in our high schools. ...

...How to protect From unauthorised access. Firewalls Secure socket layers (SSL) Strong passwords Firewalls Firewalls are a set of related programs that are located at a network gateway server. Firewalls protect private networks from users from other networks getting access. Firewalls are important to have to stop people from accessing things they shouldn’t as for example if someone not involved in a business gets access to a business’s website they then could access that business customers private information which would make that business not be trusted by the public which would lose the business money. Secure socket layers- easier to remember as (SSL) is a protocol for transmitting private documents through the internet. SSL keeps users personal details such as full name, address, bank card details, etc. knowing that websites with ‘https’ with the ‘s’ after the ‘http’ indicates that the website is secure and can be trusted to not do anything it shouldn’t such as sharing out your personal details or taking more money that agreed on if it was a site where you were purchasing something. Other sites that cannot be trusted may ask for details and if you give them all your details that that’s giving them everything that they need to steal your money and even steal your identity. Identity Theft

...often it is a family member who rips you off. The best way to protect yourself is to buy and use a paper shredder and a safe. Also the only organization you are legally required to give your Social Security Number is your employer and financial institutions, like a bank. The economic effect of identity theft is more than what people may think. Check fraud alone rose to 5.5 billion dollars in 2003. Because that money was taken from others instead of made legally, the economy shows a loss. The annual cost of identity theft to businesses is 53 billion dollars because if somebody gets the I.D of a business owner then they can funnel money out of that person’s business as well as their personal bank accounts. The American Bankers Association reported 677 million dollars of losses in 2003, which is a slight decline from 2001. Being that the article is a few years old, I would say that those numbers have gone way up since then. If somebody steals your identity, it could affect you in countless ways. All of a sudden your credit card will start being declined for insufficient funds. When you go home and check your bank account online, your money will have magically disappeared. A person could also open many credit cards in your name, ruining your credit. Now that your credit is ruined, you won’t even be able to get a loan for as small as 1000 dollars. As I said earlier there is only a few ways to protect yourself from this. Since most identities are stolen through paper...

Net Neutrality

...Your internet provider provides you with everything from the internet. They essentially are like a highway to your computer. But what if this highway had a toll booth with three options; an extremely expensive ipass allowing rich websites to pass easily to your desktop, a normal priced toll with no ipass slowing down poorer sites, and the toll could turn away any website they like. Internet service providers are trying to push for this kind of internet, a money based internet where they don’t have to show any competitors websites at all. This doesn't sound like a good thing for the internet we know and love. In order to protect the fundamental principle that the internet was based on, and small web-based companies, net neutrality Must be protected and preserved. To understand why Net Neutrality must be preserved first you have to understand it, the economics of it, the arguments against the system, and the effect its change would have on small web-based companies. Net Neutrality can be defined very simply, that all websites are treated equally and distributed to the consumer or business equally. According to Tim wu, a professor at Columbia law School, he says on his personal website article Network Neutrality FAQ “The idea is that a maximally useful public information network aspires to treat all content, sites, and platforms equally.” What he is saying here is that basic concept of Net Neutrality is that no matter what provider, or platform (computer, tablet, or phone...

Criminals need ways to dispose of the cash and have it reappear as part of their wealth with as little chance as possible of it being tracked back to the cash element.
