In American society any little feature about a person that is seen as “different” is looked down upon. We call these people “others.” Everyone in one way or another can consider themselves an other, but the problem is those who judge the others. Prejudices are created for those with characteristics of being an other, but not with those who judge them, and that is the issue. Others do not fit in with the normal Americans, so society feels the need to judge them. These prejudices are primarily used in minority groups; whether this it is based on race, or gender the individual is still considered a minority. They will hold these judgements without even knowing the person or their culture. Culturally we are all different, just because someone has a certain skin color does not mean they are automatically inferior or superior compared to another person. Because of these racial assumptions the children of these cultures feel as if they are supposed to do certain things. For example, “black children often seem to think of schoolwork's a “white” activity” (Buck, 2014, p. 637). This should not be taught, because then we blame the children and their parents for their unlikelihood to be successful in society. In reality, it is societies fault for instilling the idea that being dumb is a “black thing” and being smart is a “white thing” into our children’s minds. Society needs to merge the lines between races, because instead of blaming a race you’d blame person and it would never be because what they looked like. So many foreign or bilingual parents have “made sure that the only language spoken in the house…was English” (Algranati ,2012, p. 669). It is a preconceived notion that girls are more dramatic, and guys are not. So when a male is enthusiastic they are assumed to be homosexual or too feminine. In reality, “both genders are believed to share many of the same human characteristics” (Devor, 2012, p. 673). This means that both males and females are simply humans, and can react in the same way or in a different way. For women, if we do not carry ourselves a certain way society begins to question them. Society creates such a thin line between masculinity and femininity; if you sway a little to the left or right you automatically get labeled as acting like a different gender. To automatically point out masculinity we look to “body postures, speech patterns, and style of dress which demonstrate… dominance and authority” (Devor, 2012, p. 676). By holding these characteristics to be only for males, females are already made to be inferior in society. Women should never hold themselves in a way that others would look towards them for authority. By sitting with your legs apart you are automatically demeaning yourself and becoming less feminine. Society should not place these prejudices and labels on gender because they create negative judgements and self esteem issues. When a gender may cary themselves differently we look at it as a threat because “by doing something that is contrary to the groups typical behavior, you re signaling that you do not care
