RADICAL OPENNESS
The article mentions four principles of Radical Openness, which led the companies to make a drastic radical progress from past, which I believe these are most basic and essential part of it:
Principle One: Collaboration. This is openness in the sense that firms are keeping their boundaries more porous, flexible and open. So open networks are making companies to strive in the market than when they were closed.
Principle Two: Transparency. It is about the communication of precise information to partners or stakeholders. This implies companies have to be open and transparent for high performance and fast processes. Here author shares example of Wikileaks.
Principle Three: Sharing. Sharing is about providing rights to the ideas and inventions or giving up contents, resources or assets developed or implemented. The companies now prefer to share intellectual property and releasing patents so as to gear up the research, foster relationships and stimulate progress in the areas of profits, rather than to spend time and efforts to control and protect proprietary resources and innovations
Principle Four: Freedom.
Author mentions that “The open world is bringing empowerment and freedom.”, and the changes occurring by the openness is positive. Keeping the ideas, processes, innovation open to others, does not mean they will be defeated, after all, it will make a world better place to live, creating more empowerment, freedom and a collaborated intelligence team without leaders.
The main factor for this drastic change in opening up the society is the digital era or age. The extraordinarily efficient combination of the technical devices and Internet, which gives everyone an ability to connect and collaborate in the interests and ideas, is forcing almost every aspect happening over the globe.
With the advantages of “Openness” at the stake it is also unnerving for business. It is because of today’s fast paced information sharing along the internet and social media, companies does not have control on their information, but have no or less ability or platform to change or mold public perceptions.
Past were the days when “Openness” was never counted as an integral or important part of organizational growth, wherein now it has become an essential but innovative mean to strive in the market. Radical openness is a key to not only our society or individual advantage, but it gives a global platform for people to participate in open, free, prosperous and sustainable economy.
Companies that are transparent, and appear to have nothing to hide, are considered more trustworthy by their customers and partners, depicting the “out-of-the-box” thinking capabilities.
Personally, I feel, the term Radical Openness, is to find ways to harness the creativity and ideas inherent in our society, to collectively (1) solve problems, (2) build better business and marketing platforms, (3) make better products and (4) induce better services. Truly, we should all embrace this openness and seek to make the world a much better and sustainable place to live in. But keeping this in mind, we should think about the bi-product of the Radical Openness can be risky if not managed well and not knowing the purpose of what we want. One has to be very cautious in using this term carefully and always think about that a coin has two sides, and hence it should never be used to disclose privacy.
The concept of Radical Openness can best be supported by the popular non-profit educational website, Khan Academy, created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan. The factors depicting the Radical Openness such as transparency and sharing is truly been a core objective behind formation of this academy. The website shares free online collections of thousands of tutorials on varied subjects, which gives a feeling of classroom lectures. The videos get available to anyone and anywhere, to all those in need of knowledge. Collaboration can also be explained by the way the tutorials are made and shared on YouTube. It’s a collective and precise teaching method. The website being free and user friendly makes anyone using it comfortable and the pattern of studies makes not only the kids but also the teachers excited to learn through this. These days’ teachers are using these videos in the classroom making the classes more interactive and full of thoughts.
