...Proceedings of the 5th International Seminar on Fire and Explosion Hazards, Edinburgh, UK, 23-27 April 2007 CHARACTERIZING OF DESIGN FIRES FOR CLOTHING STORES EHAB ZALOK, AND GEORGE HADJISOPHOCLEOUS Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Carleton University 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada ABSTRACT This paper presents the work carried out at Carleton University to characterize design fires for clothing stores. The work includes a survey of clothing stores to determine fire load and type of combustibles and medium-scale testing of fuel packages designed to represent the fire loads and type of combustibles in these stores. The experiments are conducted in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC)’s Fire Research Program using NRC’s full-scale facilities. Fourteen different clothing stores were surveyed and the data collected were analyzed to determine the total fire load (MJ) in each of the stores, the fire load density (MJ/m2), and the contribution of different combustible materials to the total fire load. The survey was conducted in 2003 in the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Gatineau. The analysis of the survey data indicated that three different fuel packages should be used to represent clothing stores. One package is used to represent clothing stores with small floor area, the second to represent stores with wood as the major combustible, and the third to represent stores with cloth as the major combustible. The results...

...Ramesh Tuladhar is a manager of a production department in Sagar Groups, a firm that manufactures office equipment. After reading an article that stressed the benefits of participative management, Ramesh believes that these benefits could be realized in his department if the workers are allowed to participate in making some decisions that affect them. The workers are not unionized. Ramesh selected two decisions for his experiment in participative management. The first decision involved vacation schedules. Each summer the workers were given two weeks- vacation, but no more than two workers can go on vacation at the same time. In prior years, Ramesh made this decision himself. He would first ask the workers to indicate their preference dates, and then he considered how the work would be affected if different people were out at the same time. It was important to plan a vacation schedule that would ensure adequate staffing for all the essential operations performed by the department. When more than two workers wanted the same time period, and they had similar skills, he usually gave preference to the worker with highest productivity. The second decision involved production standards. Sales had been increasing steadily over the past few years, and the company recently installed some new equipment to increase productivity. The new equipment would allow Ramesh's department to produce more with the same number of workers. The company had a pay incentive system in which workers received...

...Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday accused the NDA government of turning the programme to clean Ganga as a "Hindutva project" by attempting to polarize politics through the initiative on the holy river. "Don't look it as a Hindutva project. This is not a Hindutva project. This is a national project. Don't try to polarize politics through Ganga cleaning," Ramesh told the government ahead of the first national dialogue on river Ganga - Ganga Manthan — being organized by the Centre tomorrow. The former environment minister said the government's Ganga Mission programme should be a people's programme and "we must involve society". "But don't make it on sadhus and sant's programme. Ganga is a national river. Ganga defines Indian culture," he said, adding Jawaharlal Nehru also spoke about the role of Ganga in Indian culture. Union and state ministers, MPs, experts, NGOs, sadhus and sants are expected to participate in the day-long brainstorming on Ganga cleaning plan. Spelling out the steps taken by the previous UPA government to conserve the holy river, Ramesh said, "The NDA is going about this whole thing as if nothing has happened." He accused the BJP-led government of not acknowledging the initiatives taken by the UPA including establishment of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) for cleaning Ganga. NGRBA was established in 2009 when Ramesh was environment minister. "They are not talking of NGRBA, they are not talking of IIT-River Basin management...

...THE BEST DEAL Issues As mentioned in the case study, Usop decided to sell his car by parking it outside with a notice stating “ For Sale. One Owner. Best Price RM 8 750. Please call at number 34 Jln Semarak 2, Kuala Lumpur or telephone 03-8251178.” In this case, first and foremost we need to identify this is an invitation to treat or an offer or proposal. An offer should be contrasted with an option and an advertisement. According to Section 2(a), Usop has made an offer or proposal to sell his car with a price RM 8 750 and he provided enough details for an offeree to reach him. The first person who see the advertisement is Sarah. On Monday morning, Sarah called Usop and offer RM8000 to buy the car instead of RM 8 750, the price offer by Usop. However, Usop neither agree or disagree to the offer. Then later, Usop decided to sell his car to Sarah by posting a letter of agreement, however when he read Betty’s notice, he decided to withdraw his proposal to Sarah. The issue arise here, either the acceptance is complete or not? Whether an agreement between Sarah and Usop is properly formed and either Usop can revoke the acceptance once he posted the letter of agreement? If the acceptance is complete and an agreement is formed, there is no question of revocation. On the other hand, the issues between Betty and Usop is regarding the communication of acceptance.Whether the communication of the proposal is completed or not between Betty and Usop and when the communication is completed...
