Reaction Paper: Raul Sunico Premiere Concert

On 22 February, 2015, Dr. Raul Sunico performed a premier concert at the Old Senate Hall at the National Museum of the Philippines. He opened the show with a Polonaise form the opera, “Eugene Onegin” followed by the first-time performance of three concertos by Tchaikovsky. It was a sure privilege of mine to have attended a concert that showcased an actual breakthrough in music history done by our very own dean Dr. Raul Sunico. It did not occur to me that it was the first time all three Tchaikovsky concertos were performed in one concert until I read the program. However, prior to reading the program, I noticed a number of photographers that were present to cover the event and I immediately thought to myself that something special is happening. Knowing that the dean of the Conservatory himself was having a concert was my initial motivation to attend the concert because I was curious as to how good and credible he really was to be our dean. Not that I ever doubted him, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to watch a good example of musicality set by the dean of the conservatory himself.
Another incentive of mine in deciding to attend the concert was the fact that it would be my first time going to the National Museum and my first time to hear the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. It was fitting to have a concert in the museum because art and music always complemented each other, especially when they can be appreciated in the same venue. When there is a debut gallery event, I noticed that a quartet is usually hired to give ambiance to the showcasing, as is always the case when live music is performed anywhere. It is vice versa for a music concert located in a venue where the art adds to the atmosphere, which greatly aids the dispositions of the audience toward the kind of concert they are attending.

The Holocaust

...The Holocaust was a tragic time for the Jewish community, and before this class I never truly realized how much each individual went through or what they had to do to survive. The entire period was filled with struggle and suffering and strength for the willpower to survive. Jewish men, women, and children were treated poorly, experimented on, stripped of their clothes and identity, and more. I heard stories like these from real people in the films, The Last Days directed by James Moll (1998), Shoah directed by Claude Lanzmann (1985), and Europa, Europa directed by Agnieszka Holland (1991). Each film was structured to tell stories from survivors of the Holocaust, but the film that taught me and spoke to me the most was The Last Days. This film showed the horrors of life in concentration camps, but it also emphases the will to survive and optimistic mindset each had in order to do so. The Last Days stands out from the others because it was a film that really personalized each individual. During the entire film, it focused on the lives of five Hungarian Jews and their journey to freedom. Although Europa, Europa and Shoah had emphasis on the strenuous journey to survive the Holocaust, neither of these films went deep into each life to show the range of stories and pain people had to go through. By having multiple people and making them unique individuals, The Last Days succeeded in showing the audience that the Holocaust did in fact reach an entire population full of different...

King Lear Act Iii Scene 4

...In Act 3, scene 4, Shakespeare utilizes the ominous storm pounding down upon the suffering Lear in order to elucidate the storm which actually affects Lear the greatest--the internal storm caused by the ingratitude shown by his daughters Regan and Goneril. Prior to Lear’s speech, Kent urges the King to enter a nearby hovel for the purpose of protecting himself from the seemingly unbearable storm. The tempest in Lear’s mind, however, is revealed as a greater concern than the storm on the outside. Lear is so fixated on his daughters’ ingratitude that he scarcely feels the effects of the harsh environmental elements crashing down upon him. He then gives a metaphorical speech to Kent, and he declines to enter the hovel while urging both Kent and the fool inside. The speech given by Lear before he implores Kent to enter the hovel is a major component in the development of the scene, as a whole, as it cleverly exhibits, through various poetic devices, both the mental situation of Lear and the progression of the play’s plot. A particular rhetorical device Shakespeare uses to manipulate Lear’s speech is syntax and rhythmic deviation. Lear commences his speech using an almost natural rhythm in which he speaks in long, smooth sentences: “Thou think’st ‘tis much that this contentious storm Invades us to the skin....” ( lines 6-7) However, it becomes quite evident to the reader when Lear begins focusing more and more on the tempest inside his mind--the storm that he feels...

Picture of John Lennon and Che Guevara

...Imagine Peace and revolution are two ideas with different meanings and actions, but they often fight for the same result. Peace is harmony between people, groups, or nations. On the other hand revolution is a fight of beliefs of a better future. We can see these two ideas together everywhere. Many songs are written with peaceful meanings; some people decide to make peaceful strikes, and some believe in their hearts for a better future. We can also see how peace can come from revolutions: in Greece people are striking against their government because Greece is now bankrupt; in Libya, the rebels killed the dictator Qaddafi; the Syrian revolution; the Cuban revolution, where Fidel Castro with Che Guevara’s help overthrew Batista’s dictatorship; and many other revolutions. All these revolutions happened, some are happening, and some are going to happen for a better and peaceful future. We can also see those two ideas together in the picture above. In this picture, on the left is John Lennon and on the right is Ernesto Che Guevara, both playing guitar. Music in this picture also plays a big role. In the background of the picture seems to be a container on the left. The background of the picture was taken in Chicago on August 11th 1966 when John Lennon was there. This picture is fake, because Che Guevara on August 11th 1966 was travelling to Bolivia. However, the meaning of this picture is huge and that’s why I chose this picture to write about. John Lennon...

What If I Woke Up as a Girl

...Raul Castro Tohalino Dr. Rubenstein Human Sexuality April 7, 2013 This would have never crossed my mind; but if one day I woke up and all the sudden I am a girl, I would freak the crap out! For starters, I would think that I am still sleeping and it’s just a dream. However, after a few minutes I would realize that it’s not a dream and that I became a girl overnight. After getting over the fact that I am now a girl, I would get up and check myself out to “see what I’m working with”. Then I would mentally prepare myself to getting hit on by every guy, because mentally I’m still a guy but physically I’m a women. A couple benefits of being a girl however are ladies first, emotional blackmail, and makeup and dressing. Ladies first, every one of us must have heard of this phrase -” ladies first”. Being a girl or a woman we often enjoy this particularly special right when standing in a queue or waiting in a crowded train or bus for a vacant seat. This is a fully known point that the vacant seat must be given to a lady first If there is any. And If unfortunately any idiot (obviously a man) doesn’t follow the acclaimed rule then he must get ready to be embarrassed by the co-travelers. Emotional blackmail, this is again something can only be done If you are a girl. Being in a relationship sometimes there are few demands that we want to be fulfilled by our partners at any cost, whether they want to or not. Trust me this emotional blackmailing is the strongest weapon of girls to...

Latin American History

...John Van Buskirk History 131 Professor Ehrlich October 10th, 2015 Lázaro Cárdenas, Juan Perón, Jorge Gaitán and Fidel Castro are four people that are famous for what they did for their people. The main agenda of each person is what shaped that person’s future. Also every person strived to help the poor people of their country or town. Even though it did not always work in the long run. Each person had their own unique way to do this. Lázaro Cárdenas’ main agenda as president was to fix the Mexican economy. With fixing the economy he wanted to give back to the poor people of Mexico. Cárdenas did this mainly by getting rid of all the haciendas. They way haciendas had workers is by giving the workers loans and making them work to pay them back. With the end of the Haciendas was the end of the imprisonment by loan. Every time he stopped a hacienda he distributed the land to the people who worked them. On paper this idea looked great but in actuality it was not. Cárdenas distributed 18,352,275 hectares among 1,020,594 peasants. He shut down perfect and terrible haciendas regardless of the status. According to the Biography of Power, a witness stated “no one really knew which way to go ... they expected us to know everything overnight”. Each worker on the haciendas only knew one job, their job. This lead to catastrophe and a drop in agricultural productivity. The major problem people had with Cárdenas was that he took away a working system instead of fixing it. But in the end...

Dirty Dancing Havana Nights

...Lydia Garcia Professor Raul Rubio November 20, 2014 Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights Directed by: Guy Ferland 1. Set against the corrupt glamour and escalating danger of revolution-eve Cuba, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights follows the blossoming love affair of young couple Katey and Javier against the backdrop of the Cuban Revolution in 1958. Katey is an American girl living in Cuba with her parents who meets Javier, a local. Javier takes Katey to a nightclub where he teaches her how to dance dirty Cuban-style. They prepare for the big Latin dance contest, but Castro's revolution is about to change everything. The two grow closer and closer, but when Castro takes over, Katey's parents decide to flee for the U.S., leaving Katey to make the ultimate decision. 2. The story tries to balance youthful flirtation with the serious theme of political revolution. Castro demanded power and tried for a long time to overthrow the Batista’s government. The Cuban Revolution was a turning point in recent history and because of Castro and his status as dictator is highly opposed by many nations because of the violations of human rights practiced under his rule. 3. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights didn’t really didn’t display many scenes that brought the filled tragedy of the revolution but there were two parts that struck out to me the most. The first scene was when Katey and Javier were walking down the street and they stopped to hear and watch a group of men that were singing beautifully...

Growing Up Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis

...fed up with Ralph’s rules. However, readers can ask themselves, is it okay to challenge the rules, but then replace them with harsher rules and leadership? "Why should choosing make any difference? Just giving orders that don't make any sense—" (5.238-241). Ralph most certainly believes that Jack shouldn’t be a leader, and he has a great reason to stand by his opinion. Jack gained his power through force and enforced rules that wouldn’t make sense for normal people. Does that mean that just because someone disagrees, they should use force to make people comply with their beliefs? Should Jack use force to make the littluns join his group? If we consider history, this isn’t the first time this has happened. Look at Fidel Castro, his brother Raul Castro, Nicolae Ceausescu, or the ruthless Mao Zedong, all of whom took control by force, and later suppressed their citizens with harsh regulations and communist beliefs, which supported secret police who killed many for disagreeing with the beliefs of the supreme leader. Sound familiar? The rules have changed. In chapter 11, Jack launches a spear at Ralph with “full intention” (11) to kill him. He was no longer the choir kid who could sing high C sharp, he was a leader, a “chief”. "The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red" (10). Jack is only a name for the beast that has consumed him. Perhaps the “beast” was only a metaphor. Perhaps it symbolized the inner savage that laid within all the survivors...
