Another article, “An Introduction to Fairy Tales” by Maria Tatar, summarizes the basic principles of all fairy tales. In addition, Tatar introduces a message brought across from many fairy tales. Both of these articles directly relate to the movie Breaking Away, which is about a group of four friends who grow up in the poor suburbs of Bloomington, Indiana. In the movie, the group of friends struggle to find where they belong in society. One of the main characters, Dave Stoller, resorts to riding his bike as an outlet to his life problems. Dave Stoller’s life is a classic example of a modern day Cinderella story. The movie and the articles show how a person can rise from the most challenging and...

...Reaction Paper The Paper When working in the corporate world, it can be very hard to balance work and family. I found this to be true, especially in the newspaper business, while watching the movie The Paper. Martha (Marissa Tomei) is pregnant in her ninth month and is very worried that Henry (Michael Keaton) won’t be there for her when the baby arrives. He promised to spend more time with her, but he wakes up in his clothes from the day before because he didn’t get home from work until 4am. She gets very upset. Henry is an overworked newspaper editor for The Sun, which is located in Manhattan. Where there is a lot of competition. Henry seems to be obsessed with wanting to beat the competition and gets very upset when his paper misses the big story of the day. He always saying throughout the movie “got to get story today, not tomorrow, today.” He’s under pressure to get his story, which is the right story, by the deadline. He also has pressure from his managing editor Alicia Clark (Glen Close) to get his story by deadline or they will run the wrong story today. She says “run it today, fix it tomorrow” and “those are union drivers waiting, mister.” She’s all about the money. I have had to deal with this type of thing in the corporate world. It seems that management is all about making money for the company whether it’s good for the customer or not. Henry gets caught in a dilemma when Martha sets up an interview at the prestigious Sentinel. On one hand...

...Home Reaction Paper of the movie entitled Home The film home by Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a beautifully shot panorama of the Earth and the damage done to it by modern humanity. It includes a moving narration about the evolution of the Earth, nature, agriculture, humans, and the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degradation...of the environment, health, economic disparity, and more. The movie starts by taking the viewer back to the beginning of time, and explains how and when life on Earth came about. We learn, for example, that the world is four billion years old, whereas humans are only 200,000 years old. In the relatively short time we have been around, however, we have had more impact than any other species. In the last 50 years alone, the movie says, the Earth has been more radically changed than by all previous generations of humanity. The movie narrates how our mother earth evolved, how the beautiful trenches were molded, the placid and bluish color of the sea, the formation of rocks, mountains, and other magnificent sceneries were being shown and narrated. The film also shows the ecological cycle of life. The biological evolution of plants where many kinds of plants were growing and cultivating around the world and the evolution of human and animal lives that we never thought would be the one who will destroy the beautiful picturesque of our mother earth. The Internet has helped with collecting marketing data through online focus groups, Internet surveys, and experiments. The marketing research process also involves collecting and secondary data. Secondary data involves re-checking internal and external secretarial and marketing procedures, such as sales invoices, warranty cards, and published material. Therefore, an efficient means for data collection will assist this process. As defined within Marketing Research, "scaling is the process of creating a continuum on which objects are located according to the amount of the measured characteristic they possess," (2007). Therefore, this paper will review how Disney Pixar employs secondary market research, and effective scaling processes for their organization. ...Tuminski PHI2000 Character, Dignity and Self-respect Paper Capella University February, 2015 Abstract: This paper will examine the parallels and give examples of the teachings of Aristotle, Epictetus and St. Augustine, using the motion picture The Help directed by Tate Taylor. Introduction What gives human beings their character, dignity and self-respect? What makes up them up in humans? Aristotle, St. Augustine, and Epictetus all attempted to answer this very question examining human nature very closely. Aristotle took on the subject of character; Epictetus took on the topic of dignity and St. Augustine the topic of self-respect. In the movie The Help directed by Tate Taylor each of these reasoning’s can be addressed in detail and example. Aristotle and Character Aristotle approached the subject of the virtuous character like this; the soul is in two halves one being the rational and the other being the non-rational. His definition is best discussed in Nicomachean Ethics II.7: “Excellence [of character], then, is a state concerned with choice, lying in a mean relative to us, this being determined by reason and in the way in which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on defect.” (1106b36–1107a3) An example of this in The Help is in the character of Skeeter Phelan; in the movie Skeeter has come back home to her home town of Jackson Mississippi during the heat of the...

...A reaction paper about the movie SUMMER DAYS WITH COO 1. Cultural Aspect (Past and Present) The movie was about a tiny, solitary kappa marvelously survived in an earthquake over the last 200 years into modern day in Japan. Kappas are from the Edo period. Kappas do still exist in the early period wherein Japanese warriors known as Samurai headed the place. Plane fields are seen everywhere and there is still swamps in the area. Kappas are free to swim in the swamps because it is their home. There is still peace in the surroundings. They can freely do what they wanted to do without being distracted by other. It’s just unfortunate that Coo and his father encountered some drunken guys, one of which is a samurai, and then they were scared that the father of Coo heard their dark little secret. So they prefer to kill the father of Coo. Now going back to the cultural aspects, in the present time, a lot had changed. The surroundings was changed, the means of transportation, the population growth, the clothing, and many more was changed. Even the uttered words aren’t that same as to before. The place where Coo used to live before was now turned into a modern environment. 2. The use of Formal and Casual Japanese Language The movie used formal and casual Japanese language because I have understood some of the words uttered by the characters because it was discussed to us by the instructor in school. The movie was easily understood also by the presence of the subtitle. But then...

...Paper Seven E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is a film about a young boy that grows a relationship with a lost little alien and helps him find his way home. In many films, the director uses his skills to change the belief of their audience to accommodate the story. Many things taken out of context could be viewed as strange and wild, but with directing, your mind can be manipulated. In one of the first scenes of the film, the alien space ship is shown landing but with branches and shrubbery blocking the lens. This gave the feeling that something out of the ordinary was happening, something strange. This type of camera work is shown even when the aliens are moving about. ET was then shown with a clear, long shot showing the vastness of the forest he was in. Without any previous scene to compare to , the landing scene was automatically considered strange, not just for the use of camera work, but for the fact that we don’t encounter aliens visiting earth too often. When the cut to ET happened, the director traded the audiences place with him. We were first looking at something out of the ordinary but now it was ET's turn as he has never been to our planet before. Later on, it is shown that ET was left on our planet unintentionally. We understand this, so we feel a connection with ET making him feel more real and normal. When Eliot (Main Character) meats ET, he doesn’t take the encounter to lightly, and rightfully so. Eliot nor anybody else in the film has met an alien life form...

...Traditional vs. Non-Traditional Families In today’s society parenting roles are changing drastically on a regular basis. For generations the ideal family was patriarchal and consisted of a husband working outside the home and a wife keeping the home together, even when she may have outside employment. Today, fathers are taking on roles commonly accepted as female gender roles in the family unit. Sometimes even as full time caretakers. The movie “Cheaper by the Dozen” (2003) presents both traditional and non-traditional gender roles when it comes to parenting. As the story progresses things in the household change and the family must cope and adapt to the circumstances surrounding them. The subject of this paper centers around the differences between the traditional and non-traditional roles affecting this family and how they change as well as the distinct picture this movie shows in the fundamental way society is changing. Before diving into the non-tradition parenting roles that this film explores it is important to know the background of the story. The 2003 film Cheaper by the Dozen is a loose remake of the 1950 film and book, both of the same name. As you would expect it starts with a traditional and very large family unit. In the work of Parsons and Bales, as discussed in Kemp’s “Women’s Work” is says that “Task specialization led to two distinct roles for men and women- women in the expressive role of nurturing and socializing the family members, and men the instrumental...

Exploration of this film, when jury trial does not happen in Islamic Court, deeply influenced the concepts such as the true judgment and justice in my mind as a Muslim. This paper is aimed to discuss and analysis several instances of defiance behaviors, which are displayed in the movie. It also considers strategies groups utilize to extinguish defiance in each instances of defiance. The first scene; all jurors sat around the table exception for the foreman who concerned to keep formal procedure in the group. He mentioned if all jurors get a unanimous verdict, the defendant would charge mandatory death sentence. He started to count the votes “guilty”, while jurors were raising their hands. Juror number 1, 3, 4, 7, 10 and 12 quickly put up their hands but jurors 2, 5, 6, 11 and 9 raised with slightly pause. Juror number 8 was the only person who believed the boy is not guilty and he had not been conceived to put someone into a death sentence:”It's not easy to raise my hand and send a boy off to die without talking about it first...We're talking about somebody's life here. We cannot decide in five minutes.” Certainly, it would be hard to become alone against the group. The juror number 8 is the first defiant in the movie that tries to convince others for finding reasonable doubt. His behavior might be deviated...

...Christopher Dominguez Criminal Justice 5/5/14 Reaction paper to the movie The New Centurions In the movie, The New Centurions, it shows the good, the bad, and the evil. It is a good reality movie that give you a feel for policing in LA. Even though it is out dated, the same things happen today in our society that happen in the movie. Roy Fehler, a rookie cop out of the police academy is assigned with Andy Kilvinski, a veteran cop. They got a good relationship started right in the beginning. The only bad thing that I saw was the fact that Roy was being exposed to the bad habits of Andy. Since Andy is training him he thinks these habits are alright. As Roy’s mentor and partner, Andy teaches him a lot including most of Mr. Wilson’s four principles, the primary objectives, and the three B’s ; booze, broads, bribes. Kilvinski showed Roy in many ways that the right and wrong aren’t always black and white. And the fact that life isn’t fair. Roy and Andy become very close over the coarse of five years. And even after Andy retires and moved away he came back to live. Andy then shot him self because of all the stress that he had came across over the years. I believe when he came back in town, he had seen all the guys at the police station and missed it. Also seeing a guy he trained train someone else. Before he shot himself he called Roy and told him a story about an old man on the porch. This old man symbolizes loneliness. I believe Andy became that old man on the porch. He became...

...The Hands of Fate. This film is directed by Harold P. Warren. The film is about a family that gets lost while looking for their hotel. They come across a house where they meet Torgo, an older man who is the masters “helper”. Eventually the family tries to escape the cult that they have been brought in by, but they fail to do so. Then family becomes part of the cult. To me the purpose of this play was to show the audience that the “master” is always in charger whether he has people helping him or not. I can also see that this film is showing us that we should not trust people who we don't know. It was a very strange film therefore I was a little confused on exactly what the creative team was trying to accomplish. My personal reactions to the play were that this was the worst play that I have ever seen in my life. I say this because the film quality was just terrible. I don't go out and watch a lot of movies but when I do I expect the movie to be worth the money that I paid for it. There were times in this movie where you know it is exposed to be scary but I would just laugh due to the camera angles because it would make it not scary at all. The way that the movie started off by just driving for 10 minutes looking for the hotel was boring. It took the audience attention away because after about three minutes of driving you could hear the audience talking in the background not paying attention to the movie. I mean it really just made the audience laugh and cut up. I believe that...
