...and Composition 22 October 2015 Reading, Writing, and Me I remember my mom staying with me in my kindergarten class many days of the year to hold my hand while I tried to write my name and other kindergarten words. I was taught how to read, write, and even learn how to speak two languages, all at the same time. As I learned to read I remember my parents and teachers reading books aloud to me. The type of books that were read to me, always had happy endings and everyone lived happily ever after, such as in Corduroy, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the beast, and other similar stories. It wasn’t until around first grade when I was able to read the books on my own, and around this time I was also exposed to...

...After reading Sherman Alexie's "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" I feel very shocked. I really can't remember what I was doing when I was young. Maybe I was watching TV, playing with my friends, having a afternoon nap and so on. At the same age, he started to reading foreign language books and comic books , this phenomenon will never happen in my life. Maybe he was smart and arrogant, but without the atmoshere of his family and his pervenance spirit ,he won't became such a successful people. His father like reading books and brought them from the pawnshops and secondhand and the books were so many that were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedroom and living room. He use every moments to read books such as lunch time, in the car when his family traveled, in shopping malls and so on. He also have a goodness heart and must be very patriotic. Because he always worried about the future of the Indian children and visit schools and teach creative writing to them. what;s more, although the children refuse and resist him, he never give up to save their lives. I don' t really like the Indian thinking. They hate the smart Indian people and expected to be stupid. Like what he said in the book the Indian children were monosyllabic in front of the non-Indian teachers, but after come home they were talking about complicated stories and jokes at the dinner table. How could they do this ? To be smart is everyone want and they just want to be stupid. In comic book panel...

...age my mother reading all different types of Disney books to me. I loved the Disney books that had a princess in it because when I was younger, I thought I was going to become a princess when I grew up, of course, that didn’t happen. For most of my life, up to age seven, my mom or teachers read to me because I had a speech delay and a learning disability that made it difficult for me to read alone. I would pretend to a read a book by myself, but I never really got the concept of reading and understanding what I was reading till age seven. At age seven is when I...

...Problems with Reading Reading is not much fun for me. I have tried so many times to read, but I fail each time to finish what I am reading. There were some obstacles that prevented me from reading. Since I was a child I did not have the joy to read. On the other hand, my family wanted to convince me that reading is knowledge. Even though I knew that, and I believed in that but still I could not do it. Each time I tried to read any book or even a newspaper, and I always take a glance at the pictures and headlines without digging deep inside the article. However, I try to understand the article from its headline trying to avoid reading the article, and that does not work most of the time because the headlines are just a hook that attracts the reader to the article. Besides, it is not enough words to explain the whole article from reading the headline. But sometimes I push myself to read more about the article that got my attention, but I always stop half way without completing it to the end. Therefore, I feel that I have wasted my time reading half of what I started without getting to the core of the news. Therefore, my problem with reading has many reasons that I faced, and each time I want to read there must be something that prevent me from doing it. However, not reading a lot does not help with writing. I realized that I have a problem not liking to read. So I went to my reading teacher back in sixth grade. I explained the difficulty that I have with reading. After that he...

...An Anthropologist on Mars by Oliver Sacks is definitely unlike any book I have ever read before. The books that interest me are usually fiction/fantasy or romantic. I like to think of myself as quite skilled in the subject of English and Literature, so I figured I could just grin and bear it and get through this reading easily using my same old strategies. I immediately found out that this was not going to be the case. Sacks is clearly a well-educated and experienced man, and it shows in his writing. A lot of the vocabulary utilized stumped me to the point where it made grasping the gist of the reading difficult. Although I have to admit once I got past the boring introduction of Temple Grandin’s autism, I was quite interested in reading more. I was very interested in reading and learning about autism once I was able to focus. The reading is about Temple Grandin, a high-functioning autistic, who has accomplished a variety of things in her life. I had never heard of her before but after reading this chapter I was very interested in her and autism itself. I happen to know some people that are autistic so this reading definitely allowed me to empathize more with them now that I understood their condition. One specific thing I learned which I thought was interesting was that individuals with autism often experience other disorders. “The genetic form may be associated, in the affected individual or family, with other genetic disorders, such as dyslexia, attention deficit...

...Reading never came to me easily growing up. I struggled tremendously with trying to find the meaning in the author’s words, because the books didn’t make sense to me. It always felt as if it was fight that I’d never win. I felt this way for some time till I read, ‘The Not So Lonely Good Company of Books’ by Bryce Shoemaker. Instead of searching for a meaning Shoemaker’s essay confirms how books are a learning experience and how the reader chooses to apply that knowledge to their everyday life. This furthered my idea that not everyone is able to be successful at reading, but can still have learned something that will impact their life. Inside the student essay Bryce Shoemaker shares his opinions on literature as well as his thoughts on an essay,...

...Looking back at my last year’s AP Language Composition class , the frustration I felt while reading the short stories written by Ernest Hemingway was overwhelming. Even after rereading the story we were working on, I was unable to fully understand it. The short story that I remember the most is the “Sea Of Change”. In this story, a man is having a discussion with his girlfriend or wife about her embarrassing him and she leaves him. A shift in the character's behavior suggests that the man went through a change. The “change” he went through was something I failed to figure out. After a class discussion multiple ideas were thrown and as a class we agreed that Hemingway was suggesting the man was gay. Without the help of my class, coming up...

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course? Currently, I approach weekly course reading material in a fairly unconventional way. My weekdays are usually incredibly hectic between my job of working with my clients and my day to day personal life with my children, so finding any quality reading time is hard during the day time hours. I generally have all reading material downloaded to my laptop in advance as we all should so I can get in a bit of reading time during my break time and my clients nap time. The problem with this is, even though it is quiet and my break time, there is still quite a bit of activity going on around me having to deal with small odds and ends, breaking any concentration I have and understanding of the text. I do get a small amount of time in peace when I get home and right before the kids get home after school in which I use to get in some reading and study time. This time is definitely quality time as my concentration is at its greatest and I can get something done. The night hours, usually after dinner, is where things have been really...

I also find that I’m easily distracted if I’m not interested in what I have to read, sometimes I find I have to re-read some things if I’m bored with the reading, I’m really bad at this if I have distractions like the TV, I tend to watch TV in the middle of my reading, and then I forget what I have already read. But I do eventually finish my readings, I know it’s not the best way to go about completing my readings during the weeks, but as of right now it’s the only way I can go about completing the reading assignments. • How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time? I incorporate some of these suggestions by taking notes and putting all my notes for that reading in a folder, so I can refer back to my notes when doing assignments for each reading. Another strategy I can incorporate is doing all my readings at the same time each week...

...a bad reader. Finally a guidance counselor gave the encouragement that made me into a good reader. If my elementary school teacher had shown compassion I would have been a good reader long before. Instead I heard Can you read? Can you write? Boy, you need a reading and writing class. The teacher did not realize that her job was to teach me reading and writing. Elementary school teachers need lessons in respect and compassion. As a seven year old in the second grade at Robinson Elementary school I heard often that I should be in a special class from my teacher Mrs. Crawford. I loved reading and writing before Mrs. Crawford class. From preschool to the first grade I use to sit down and read books to my mother and other family members. That all changed during my second grade year Mrs. Crawford and the other children would make fun of me when it was my time to read I would stumble over words miscall words many times it was because I was nervous and afraid. If Mrs. Crawford would have worked with me on my reading and writing I would not have struggled so hard though elementary school she could have setup a tottering program that would have enhanced my reading or she could stayed late some days after school with me to help me develop into a good reader. Instead Mrs. Crawford found it best to belittle me and hart my feelings . By the time I was in the 3rd grade I was completely terrified of reading and writing. when it was my time to read out loud in class I would do just...

...she reads to me from “Oh the places you'll go” by Dr. Seuss. My head is on her shoulder and her voice changes with each description. She asks me questions every time a page turns. “Where do YOU want to go”, she asks. It's not the first time we have read this book and, at 5 years old, I have lots of ideas of where I want to go. Sometimes it is to Granny and Grandpa's, sometimes it's to the moon. She asks me where I'll go when I'm sad or in a “Slump”. My answer for that is always, “I'll come home to you!” She laughs and keeps reading. By the time I'm 5, this scenario has played out many times as I get to pick out the book that we read before bed each night. At least once a week, I choose this book. I didn't realize, at the time, how important these times were. Looking back, I realize that each night spent reading books instilled in me the importance to read, taking what you read and broadening your mind, of taking what you read and applying it to yourself, and also, most of all, the importance of taking time to share that love of reading with someone. “What direction will you go?”, she might ask. “UP!”, I would say. With every question she would ask, I would have to think. I always wanted to give a different answer, because I never knew where it might take me. The hows, the whys, the wheres were all ways that she would teach me to think about what we were reading. “What could happen?” was always one of my favorite questions. This one would make me think harder,...

...Another World Reading, an activity some hate, some love, but at the end of the day, is something everyone does at some point in the day. As a child, I refused to read, like everyone else I assumed it would be boring as my older brother would whine whenever a reading assignment was given to him. My assumptions about reading could not have been more wrong, however, my doubts about the activity stopped me from truly enjoying a book until the fifth grade. There were many books the class read together my fifth grade school year, each of which I just could not get into. This lack of connection furthered my opinions on reading, as i was forced to read a book by myself which I could not connect to. Previous to this, the only way for me to truly...

...My experience from English 101 helped me grow as a reader and writer. One manner in which my English skills improved transpired through reading and writing assignments. Essays remarkably helped me understand the English language to a greater extent. Moreover, the templates from they say I say the moves that matter in academic writing expanded my understanding of the point the author was trying to make.
