...Jasmine Wright Prof. Riveland ENG 102-078 March 4, 2015 War Experiences: Vietnam Between the 1950-1980’s, soldiers were busy with fighting for our country. The Vietnam War had a huge impact on America. It began in 1954 and more than 3 million people were killed. In class, we read three pieces of literature related to the conflict, Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, and Vietnam: The Loss of American Innocence by Terry Leonard. Two of the literatures giving a feel of what it was like to fight a war or even be living during the time of the war and the last one telling the events that took place during the time of the war. No one that wasn’t living during the time of the war does not know exactly what it was like, but can give an opinion on what it might have been like. In Things They Carried and Dulce et Decorum Est, two stories that convey the experience during the war. Things They Carried conveyed the way of life. The author, Tim O’Brien, kept emphasis on the things they carried, which symbolized things that meant the most to them. He did not incorporate the bad, ugly and terror of the war, but gave an idea when he included Ted Lavender’s death. Family and loved one’s that the soldiers left back home meant the world to them. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was a character that showed how their loved ones were missed. He was in love with a girl back home, Martha, he kept her letters with him everywhere he went. When Lavender was killed...

...November 2014 Formal Paper 1 The Things They Carried, written by Tim O'Brien carry both the tangible and intangible details of war, death, and destruction. The emotional baggage this literary masterpiece entails will always reach audiences across the globe. The author taps into thousands of veterans, soldiers, and even the family that awaits them at home. It's real, it's American, and it expresses the weight of not just physical but, the emotional burdens soldiers carry. The Alpha Company in O'Brien's story doesn't focus on whether the events were accurate but the result war has had on mankind. It is the content of the story that makes this piece timeless and true to the experience of military in combat. For example, the author uses facts to create a setting. He explains in detail what the soldiers carry, such as Dave Jensen who carried," three pairs of socks and a can of Dr. Scholl's foot powder. . . then he was shot". Details like these are the epitome of mundane events mixed with philosophical thoughts, and tons of detail. From the guilt, grief, and depression to the M16's, comic books, and tranquilizers they carry, this story has it all. Although no one really knows if these events are true, the reader can appreciate the literary range the author reaches. O'Brien's matter of fact approach and character formation is like the Basketball Diaries but with PTSD. Young boys, pushed into war, during the Summer of Love, and everything is confusing: “I was no soldier. I hated Boy...

...Introduction Buddhism is based on the teachings of an Indian prince turned ascetic turned sage, Siddhartha Gautama, who lived in the sixth to fifth centuries BCE. “The Buddha,” meaning “one who is awakened,” was concerned with the nature of human suffering and the possibility of removing it. Having witnessed such human problems as sickness, old age and death, the Buddha was determined to understand the source of human suffering. After six years of diligent and diverse meditative practice, Buddha revealed what are known as the Four Noble Truths – life is suffering; the cause of suffering is desire and craving; the extinguishing of all craving and desire, and hence all suffering, is possible; and the Eightfold path is the road out of the realm...

...up as a child in the 1960’s and listened to what my parents were listening to. Songs like Finger Popping Time by Hank Ballard and the Midnighter’s, I got a Woman, Ray Charles, The Great Pretender, Sam Cooke and Think by Aretha Franklin, who is said to be the Queen of Soul. These songs were of good times, happy times, they made me feel that everything was well in the world, despite the horrific turmoil in the U.S. caused by the Vietnam War. I still look back at those times as some of the best times in America and my musical experiences. I think the music then reflect my childhood experiences of sensibility, freedom, fun and laughter. My adolescence year’s music seemed to change a bit in America as well as for me and what we listened to in our home, as well as on my own. I was never much of a rebel so I guess music in my adolescence years was more of a way for me to fit in. Songs in the late 70’s were changing over Woodstock was over as well as the whole Love & Peace movement. We were bringing troops home from Korea and the long dreaded Vietnam War was finally coming to an end. People were rejoicing and ready to try and love again. Songs were about men loving their women and some even inspirational and uplifting like Bridge Over Troubled Waters. This seemed to bring comfort to many, myself included, I discovered cuddling and girlfriends and it showed in all of the songs that were being made and played on the radio. Songs like You’re All I Need...

...In the cases of Vietnam and Korea, the wars nominally (as measured by the authors) started and ended under presidents from different parties. This may point to factors, either together with war or alone, which may influence roll-call voting. For example, Truman followed a popular president from his own party, however, he was not elected to the office. He saw the successful conclusion of one (relatively popular) war, and the entry of the U.S. into another (unpopular) war. It is not likely that Truman shared the same degree of Congressional support or influence Roosevelt had, ceteris paribus. Additionally, the WWII bleeding of the country on two fronts, and resultant post-war demobilization, point to a war weariness that may account for MC voting shifts before, and at the onset of, the Korean War. The election of a very popular Republican president near the close of the Korean war muddies the waters still further. The Vietnam case is similar, moving from a relatively popular Democrat at the beginning of the conflict, and a largely unpopular Republican at the end. The authors make note of the Watergate scandal as a possible influence, but the measurement across administrations, long duration of unpopular wars, and...

...present familiar material in an unconventional way. Unpleasant images are a form of artistic symbolism that creates a story without any words. The audience can digest the meaning and emotion behind what is on screen without having to be told. For example, American History X displays racism through the use of symbols and colors when Derek, one of the main characters, steps out on his front porch half-naked showing his bare white skin covered in dark tattoos of swastikas and white-power mottos (Smith 249). The racism displayed on his body will likely remain in the audience’s head even after they have left the theatre. The film Apocalypse Now follows the journey of a man through the Vietnam War, while illuminating the horrors, violence, and affects it had on Americans. The vision of the Vietnam jungle, fire, and helicopters in the opening scene, accompanied by Jim Morrison’s...

...In the trailer for Winter Soldier, the principal argument is that during the Vietnam War, the United States government withheld information from the American public. Testimonies and different perspectives from several soldiers who fought in the war were brought to light in the trailer. The views featured in the video compared and contrasted the way that the conflict actually occurred versus the way in which the public perceived it. I think that often, international conflicts and wars are not fully understood due to a multitude of reasons. Many of which include; public disinterest, lack of a complete story, conflicting opinions, biased news sources, and most importantly, the inability to see the conflict first hand. It is interesting, however, that despite the fact that the soldiers had all witnessed the same war, they...

...When examining history, it is a common occurrence that mankind plagues itself with war and needless fighting. As a result of this disposition, war ushers forward a sort of calamity that effects the emotions and physical endurance of all parties involved. With that in mind, a short story that perfectly captured this concept is “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. This is so because it deals with the destructive properties of war, and more importantly, how war effects the physical and emotional endurance of the people involved. Further, it can be said that there are several aspects of war, within this tale, that proves that war negatively effects the emotions and physical endurance of everyone within its realm of influence. Therefore, war itself must be held accountable within “The Things They Carried” and be exposed for its monstrous acts, for it is a...

...Successful Failure Micheal Stout 4 February, 2015 By and large, the inability to collect, report, process, disseminate, and act upon intelligence gathered by our military forces has been the cause of numerous failures in military operations. Operation Ivory Coast, a daring raid on the prisoner of war (POW) camp Son Tay during the Vietnamese war, was one such operation. Considered by many as a stunning tactical success, this mission was a failure from an intelligence standpoint, and the ultimate goal of the operation, to rescue the POW’s held at Son Tay, was unsuccessful. Operation Ivory Coast Background and Planning In the spring of 1970, intelligence gathered from the United States Air Force through analysis of aerial imagery confirmed the presence of fifty five American POW’s, a handful of which were in a condition requiring urgent rescue, located at a compound near Son Tay, 23 miles west of Hanoi. Planning was finalized in August of 1970 to conduct a raid to rescue the POW’s. It would be a joint effort between Air Force search and rescue teams and Army Special Forces. Col Arthur “Bull” Simons was given command of the ground forces. With just over a hundred service members for the ground force, a mock site was built at Eglin Air Force Base, and the joint force conducted roughly 170 training missions in preparation for the operation. Air Force pilots flew over one thousand hours at different locations in the southeastearn United States, practicing the dissimilar aircraft...

...employees in places like China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam (Fung, O’Rourke, Sabel, & Cohen, 2001). Although a great deal of responsibility does fall on the company’s management, it is also the governments of host countries who should be blamed for allowing sweatshops operation in their states. Nike has a subcontract with the host countries and the stated reports of Nike weren’t Nike’s doing. Media has been spinning for a while reports about Nike taking advantage of children, who, admittedly, have been working overtime and under hazardous conditions while receiving less than minimal wages. La Botz (2001), for example, reports that Nike was committing acts in some Asian host countries that would not be legally allowed in the United States. It was found that Nike was committing acts in the countries where its subcontracting manufacturers were housed that would be considered illegal in the United States (La Botz, 2001). Those illegal acts included child labor, labor laws, and physical working conditions. This example proves that while expanding globally, any responsible corporation needs to carefully calculate what legal, ethical, social, and environmental impact it might have in a host country. Nike protected them by hiring a man to go to these countries and assess the situations in each country. His findings were that the countries fed their employees and with some minor issues the countries were not doing anything out of realm from that country. In their turn, host governments...

...In recognising the value of individual languages we acknowledge the dignity and worth of our fellow human beings. – Desmond Tutu (Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights Follow-up Committee. April, 1998) It all began with the steam engine. The industrial revolution, which kicked off in late 18th Century set off a series of rapid improvements in technology, which provided us with mass transit and mass communications. Many places that were once exotic realms barely set upon, became multi million dollar wellness centres for exhausted western tourists, complete with western television, McDonalds outlets and internet cafes. Professor Austin’s quote rightly alludes to the fact that the developments of modern technology over the past century have been a major factor in permanently concentrating the world closer together, a place where cultures bleed into one another. And it is having a dramatic effect on the number of languages. If means are not devised to stop it, half of the worlds 7000 odd languages that are spoken today will disappear within the next couple of generations. (SBS, 2013). This will also correspond to the loss of half of the world’s cultural wealth and ancestral knowledge. I will discuss the reasons why language diversity is important, and the challenges that are presented to it by contemporary society. Language is the most important tool we as humans have at our disposal. It is the means by which we learn, and the means by which we teach. It provides us...
