The bond between my Mom and myself as I was growing up provided the basis for what I think

of the power of love today. I still reflect on this and realize that it is an unconditional bond, a

lifetime of moments with unforgettable milestones, and a love that comes naturally. In the

autumn of 1998 at age 17 the birth of my first child Lerenz Alwyn Griffith changed my world

and inspired my beliefs. From that time on I learned to appreciate my own mother's love, saw the

value of being exposed to the heartache of partner relationships and was grateful that I too had a

child to love.

My mother was adopted by a mature married couple with four children of their own. They could

I do not know why they choose my mother, but something tells me she was special and

she stood out from the other children. My mother was of Caribbean/Caucasian decent and too

many people back then would say mixed, black, biracial, mulatto or non-white. She definitely

stood out in the small town of Whitby, Ontario where she grow up. She had course hair, big

brown eyes and had shades darker skin than others. My mother did not have it easy going up.

Although, she was in a loving home with a family she would face many challenges throughout

her life. She always had odds against her through no fault of her own, but because of the

ignorance of others. Years later at the age 10 her adopted mother died of cancer and my mother

would experience the loss of the only mother she knew and loved and the one who protected her

like her other biological children. She was left to take care of her father who was a war veteran,

and an alcoholic, and who who was deaf in his left ear. She had to take on this role since all of

her older brothers and sisters had already moved on. Life was hard for my mother in her

adolescent years and she was forced to grow up fast.
