Everything he has done in his adult life has been with the sole purpose of fulfilling the most unrealistic of dreams of recapturing the past. ...The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a tale of a man who pursued the idea of a woman, not the woman herself. Jay, once known as James Gatz, grew up poor but climbs up the ladder of success, a prime example of the potential of the American dream, and is able to afford a mansion on Long Island, New York. Gatsby “sprang from his Platonic conception of himself” (104) He fabricated a life that ignores his past poverty and parents because “his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all” (104). But Gatsby’s motivation for achieving the wealth he attains is the pursuit of another dream. Jay Gatsby, as he chooses to title himself, is a man running on the fumes of his past love affair with Daisy. Despite actually accomplishing his goals of recapturing Daisy’s love or at least her attention, he still cannot stop holding on to the nostalgia. But should one abandon their own sentimentalities for the sake of reality?...

...Ransom on the High Seas: The case of Piracy in Somalia The pirates in the coast of Somalia came to activity at the start of 2003. The main reason that provoked local Somalis to start attacking foreign cargo ships was the civil war that broke out in 1991. The Somali Civil War leads to an unstable government that lacked on authority, leadership and control to stop the rising attacks between local groups. From there, Somalia went on downhill; its population decreased over two thirds from 1991 to 2011 and by 2008, the United Nations estimated that nearly 3.2 million Somalis were dependent on food aid for survival. These pirates had nothing to live fro before attacking the ships. They started hijacking the ships in look of money and valued good, however, by the first assaults they realized that the cargo in the ships was of no use for them and there wasn’t sufficient money for pirates to benefit from it. Leading them to start capturing the employers and asking for ransoms. They often worked implicitly with fundamentalist Islamic groups to provide additional on-shore security and protection for a fee. Somali’s pirates attack using small groups on speedboats that approach merchant vessel and launch hooks to climb aboard without being detected. Once on board they use small agile weapons such as AK-47’s assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades to capture the crew. Once they have taken full control of the cargo ship, they direct it near the coast from where they will conduct...

...to relax, an immediate idea is a hot shower or bath to help us unwind. Warmth is what helps ease our daily stressors, it is happiness. For instance, when I was little my father would go on a lot of work related trips. I would sneak into his dresser and grab his biggest sweaters to put on. The warmth of the sweaters helped ease my pine for my father while he was away, and I was not as sad anymore. Warmth is not only happiness but memories. When looking back on the fondest moments in life, people say it evokes feelings of warmth. I asked eleven people what their best childhood memory was, and then asked how that made them feel. The word “fuzzy” and the word “warm” came up in almost every conversation. The comfort of recapturing the happiness of times that have past give us internal warmth. For me, it’s remembering the name my grandmother gave me as a child; شمسي, or ‘my sun’ in Arabic. How she would brush my hair and tell me stories about how she grew up, or about my mother when she was a child. That moment in my childhood is a very tender thing to me, and does make me feel warm every time I’m reminded of it. This is also seen in a recent phenomenon in popular culture. A tweet from 2012 that goes, “You kill yourself and immediately wake up in your parent’s bed. You’ve been asleep for half an hour. The sun in shining”. Although it begins very morbid, it ends with the soft thought of waking up from a nap in your childhood home. Many people reacted to this tweet, commenting on the...

Today, Amazon.com has expanded its business in more than two hundred and twenty countries and this company sells various products like electronics, books, music, DVD, House wares, PCs and cars (Amazon.com Announces 4th Quarter Profit 2002). How to help Amazon.com keep standing on the stage? If Amazon.com wants to survive in E-business and start making real profits, Amazon.com should merge with other retail companies, operate a new E-business strategy, and rebuild its financial structure. Business strategies and activities play a very crucial role in the future development of the organization. These strategies become more important, in case of e-business organization such as Amazon. Every organization uses different business strategies in order to remain in business. Some adopt customer- centric strategies; some uses strategies to maximize...

...Name Date Comp I The Bear is moving in, what will the Eagle do? On February 28, Russian troop aided by the pro-Moscow militant group occupied strategic sites and building across the Crimean Peninsula under the pretense of “protecting Russian people.” Now Crimea is under the direct control of Moscow. The Russian parliament has voted to annex the region into the Russian Federation. There was a mass rally in the capital of Ukraine. The demonstration brought down the Russian backed President Viktor Yanukovych. Moscow could not tolerate this. So they decided to violate the Ukrainian territorial integrity and invaded Crimea. Soon after the invasion there was a dubious referendum in Crimea under the watchful eyes of Russian troop. About ninety six percentage of the population voted to join Russia. So now the Crimea is an independent province of Russian Federation. This is a failure for the Obama administration’s foreign policy in Europe. U.S reduced its forces in Europe in the recent years and this led the Russians to be more aggressive toward their European neighbors. Let us look at some of the article for proof. The editorial “After Crimea” published in April 2014 in the magazine America, says “the United States and the European allies are in no position to push the Russians out of Crimea.” This editorial suggests that the United States and NATO should increase sanction against Russia. Rather than going to war with the Russians. Impose sanction to bring down the Russian...

...causes of its demise. While there are myriad causes for America’s financial collapse, it is important to focus on the role of ethics, or the lack thereof, in America’s current financial dilemma. Unethical practices, particularly in mortgage lending have helped to directly contribute to the collapse of the American economy. When discussing unethical behavior and the financial collapse of America, few topics receive more attention than the mortgage lending industry, and in that industry, most of the focus falls on subprime lending. Before looking at subprime lending, however, it is central that we look at the evolution of mortgage lending. Because the approach to mortgages has changed, we must take a glance at the past methodology of mortgage lending. As recently as the past twenty years, borrowers seeking mortgage loans would go to their local banker to apply for a mortgage. This banker was oftentimes known on a personal level, and cared very much whether the loan was a good idea, both by the bank and the borrower. As times changed, this was seen as an inefficient business model (Curtis 2). Enter the mortgage broker. As corporate managers continued to seek out ever higher profit margins, mortgage brokerages came into being. Mortgage brokers were charged with the task of seeking out borrowers, much...

...Metabical Pre-Launch Opportunity There is an opportunity to address a few potential issues in the upcoming marketing campaign for CSPs’ newest weight loss drug Metabical. CSP needs to be certain that we are addressing the right opportunities leading up to our launch. As the Director of Marketing I have been asked to present a brief overview identifying issues with our current launch strategy. The following report represents the area that has been identified as the biggest opportunity that we are faced with moving forward. The context of this report is broken into separate categories’ that will each be addressed. Ultimately the goal of the report is make certain that we all are on the same page and agree that the issue at hand is the one we should attack. The most appropriate way to frame this problem/opportunity is structural (Schacter, 2014). Opportunity/Problem that is Import to CSP With any new product opportunity that our company brings to market there are always some key identified items that need to be addressed prior to that launch. The main problem we currently face is the pricing configuration of the product Metabical. We are seeking to exploit a multi-million dollar market with this new product. Statistics indicate that a significant number of Americans are overweight. For instance, by the year 2008, approximately 65% of the whole two hundred and thirty million adults in the country were obese (Quelch & Becham, 2010). It affects both the men and women. Research...

...thinks that if he can grasp this light then he will be able to capture what he hopes for most in life. For Gatsby, the hidden meaning of the light is what he desires his life to turn out to be. "Being green, the light summons Gatsby and his fellow Americans to go ahead-to 'run faster, stretch out our arms farther"' ( Noble 254). Green means go, the light is telling Gatsby to go for what he wants and to floor it. Next not only does Gatsby find hope in the light, he has wishes that are connected to the light as well. "The green light might also represent to Gatsby a projection of his wishes: a signal to go ahead to 'beat on...against the current,' to attempt so desperately with his 'unbroken series of unsuccessful gestures' the recapturing of the past he can never retain" (Burman 104). The green light gives Gatsby hope to move towards what he desires and wants to obtain. He wishes for the life he and Daisy once had together. If Gatsby were only able to reach the light then maybe he could have her. The light is what Gatsby wishes to obtain while he is in Long Island. In addition, the light is what the sailors look to when they are on the seas. "The green light is a permanently lit electric lamp...it’s a way to warn boats at night or during inclement weather that there is a structure there- that’s why it is always on" (Wulick 45). Since the green light is a projection of a warning to sailors, it will always be lit. If the light is always lit then Gatsby’s hope will always be...

...While Population: 485 centers on several different themes throughout the book, I chose to focus my interpretation on the sense of belonging the author, Michael Perry, seems to crave all through the literature, and more specifically, during chapters one and seven. In chapter one, titled Jabowski’s Corner, he opens the door to his journey by bringing us to the small town of New Auburn, Wisconsin. This is the place he belongs. He introduces many of the people of New Auburn in every chapter, but I chose chapter seven because he describes the diverse groups of individuals that make up the town and refers to them as “My People,” which is also the title of the chapter. These are the people that make up the town, the people he belongs with. I feel his love for the land, in this small Wisconsin town, is deeply expressed in both chapter one and in chapter seven. Another association the two chapters have is the idea that to truly feel that comfort and pleasure of belonging in the place where you live, love for the land may not be enough. Michael finds a way to connect to the community and then to connect the community with the land. Michael Perry, the author and main character, has returned to the place he calls home after being away for twelve years. He left New Auburn after graduating high school. While away, he earned a bachelor’s degree from nursing school and worked a couple of jobs as a nurse. He was frustrated by the fact that he didn’t know how to extricate someone...
