INT: Hello, I’m here with Lucy Brown, who has just viewed, Shawshank Redemption for the first time, and is willing to answer a few questions. Firstly, how do you think Red and Andy’s friendship develops throughout the film?

LUCY: Fantastic question! I believe Red and Andy’s friendship developed majorly throughout their time in prison. Both Red and Andy started out as complete social opposites, Red presumably from a poor background and Andy from a privileged white background. They both ended up learning new things from each other. Red takes Andy under his wing and shows him the way to do things in prison. Both characters gain mutual respect for each other whilst being in prison. Red and Andy struggle to survive the horrors of prison, but in …show more content…
Frank Darabont uses a close up of Red while he explains to Andy that he doesn’t think he could, “make it on the outside” without him. I believe this shows how much Red relies on Andy and how much he needs him by his side. The director swaps between a close up of Red, to a close up of Andy while they are talking. This shows that they are not in the same shot and are in totally different headspaces at that point of the movie. While Red and Andy are talking there is a quiet, non-diegetic piano sound playing in the background. Throughout the movie, both characters develop grey hair, which indicates the change in era and shows how long they have been in prison. I believe the ending was very powerful as it displays an unbreakable bond between two characters. When Red and Andy reunite, the director uses an extreme long shot, to demonstrate their friendship while they hug. …show more content…
I believe I can relate to this quote as sometimes I sit around not doing anything, waiting for time to pass, instead of being active and finding something to entertain myself. I think the meaning of this quote is that if you aren’t actively living your life, getting up from your metaphorical backside and doing things, then you are effectively pushing yourself closer to death. The director used over the shoulder shots, which shows Red’s concern about Andy and close ups to show the conversation between Red and Andy when the quote was being said. He also uses subjective point of view, as the camera is behind Red’s back, looking at Andy and his facial expressions. The subjective point of view alternates between Red and Andy during their conversation. You could see that Andy was agitated and his heart was racing, as he was breathless, kept looking down and not making eye contact with Red. I believe Red was worried for Andy and wanted to do his best to help

...ASSIGNMENT 1 –ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY The Shawshank Redemption In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton's illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red. Based on a story by Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption was the directorial debut of screenwriter Frank Darabont. After a long discussion, we have agreed that Andy’s act in helping Warden Norton to launder his money is ethical because he has to follow the orders given in order to keep himself from being hurt and to survive in the prison. For example...

Classicism

...McMurray July 27th, 2010 One of my favorite movies of all time (keep in mind that there is a very long list of “my favorite movies”) is“Shawshank Redemption”, primarily for the quote “Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of sh*t, smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards: that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile, only to come out clean on the other side”. I have adapted that quote into my life and how one should deal with adversity. But, I digress. What I am going to address has nothing to do with my life or how to overcome obstacles, but how that movie demonstrated a few of the concepts of classicism, particularly for the time period, and length of time, the movie was based upon. The themes and characters in the movie “Shawshank Redemption” represent the socio-economic climate of the time. The classicism displayed in the movie did not occur until our main character was several months, up to a year, into his term. As Red, played by Morgan Freeman, starts a friendly bond with Andy, played by Tim Robbins, you can see the symmetry between them. At first, the two seem to feel each other out, although Red is more the extravert to Andy’s introversive tactics. As time progresses, what starts off as business turns into life long friendship. Red is a simple, common sense driven individual whereas Andy has the upscale businessman persona with a higher than average scale of intelligence than...
