...The Civil Rights Act helped reduce employment discrimination better than any other legislation has. This Act was divided into sections called titles, which each part handle different types of discrimination. Dealing with Human Resource Title VII is considered to be relevant (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007). Title VII does not allow any employer to discriminate any individual when hiring, dismissal, compensation, promotion, benefits, or any other privileges or conditions of employment. This is based on religion, gender, race, color, or national origin. This Act also prohibits any acts of retaliation towards or against any individual who has file or plan on filing a lawsuit. Most companies are covered under this Act providing that the organization has 15 or more employees. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was challenged in court by a case known as Katzenbach v. McClung and Heart of Atlanta v. United States. This was a case about a 216 room Heart of Atlanta Hotel located in Atlanta, Georgia, whom was in violation of this law. This business refused to rent rooms to black patrons. The owner, Moreton Rolleston tried to argue in Federal Court informing the judge that this law was violating his Fifth Amendment rights to operate his company and choose clients as he wished. The owner also felt that he was violated under the Thirteenth Amendment rights by forcing him to rent rooms to blacks (Information Institute, 2011). The United States countered by informing the owner that the Thirteenth...

The major supreme court cases that dealt with Civil Rights Act and Commerce Clause are, Heart of Atlanta v. United States, Boynton v. United States, Katzenback v. McClung and Daniel v. Paul. These cases presented the unfair of discrimination treatment based on their color. Also, these cases showed the power of congress able to extend their necessary power for commerce to regulate the interstate in order does not interfere commerce. ...within a larger society (Merriam-Webster, 2010). The common characteristic in this case was race. As a child, I did not know anything about the importance and affect that race played in the state and city I lived in. This paper will provide an overview of my experiences within my community and focus on ethnicity and the way race and ethnicity has shaped my personal life view and a few of the problems that it faced when it comes to race relations. The community that I belong to or associate with would be the African American community. I am an African American black female and I reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta has a population around 61% African American, 33% Caucasian American and 6% other nationalities (Census, 2009). However, the entire state of Georgia has a population around 28% African American, 65% Caucasian American and 7% other nationalities (Census, 2009). Atlanta was one of the major cities that played a key role in the Civil Rights movement. As I read and study my history, I admire all the trials and tribulations that African Americans went through during the 1960’s. The Civil Rights movement is the main reason my community, as well as other communities, consisted of people with a common characteristic. Most communities carried the look of segregation in the late 60’s. People of the...

...to an overarching shift. Although the intertwining characteristics of a culture affect one another, it takes time for those effects to take shape and become prevalent enough to warrant recognition as a legitimate cultural shift. In the United States, the Southern culture has changed drastically from its antebellum origins due to globalization. However, due to the South’s historically strong identity, many of the ingrained ideals that stereotype the Southern culture still remain, and in effect, outsiders’ views remain constant. Although globalization is transforming the South’s social and economic principles rapidly, there is a steadfast core that remains at the heart of Southerner’s political ideals due to the strong influence of religion. When defining a region’s culture, there are four prevailing factors of influence: political, religious, social, and economic. Each factor is tied to one another, although some are more closely connected than others. The South’s original prevailing cultural characteristics can be described as Conservative politics, Christian morals, an elitist social system, and an agricultural economy. During the South’s beginnings, eighty percent of the Southern labor force worked on farms (civilwar), and in 1849, there were 1,536 plantations with an...

...The Arabic word “Islam” translates to submission in peace, and in Islamic practice it is understood to mean submission in peace to the will of the God Almighty. Islam is one of the largest religions in the world and it put into practice one of religion’s most powerful leaders, Muhammed, who had a great influence on humanity. As a religious leader, Muhammed implemented principles upon which Islam still utilize today. Muhammed claimed to be the last prophet sent from God. Post September 11, 2011, the Islam religion was cast in a negative light, but this has not negatively affected the enthusiasm of Muslim members, nor has it hindered its growth. With over a billion members belonging to the religion worldwide, Islam is one of the largest religions in the world. But what is Islam? Who is Muhammed? How does this religion differ from other religions? What motivates people to not only join the religion, but remain faithful members? If one was to conduct research on the answers to these questions, based upon media, one would assume Islam to be a religion of hatred and violence, however, it is divided into many subgroups, and among those groups there are some people that fit the description. Unfortunately, in this case, that one bad apple has spoiled the whole bunch. Islam first emerged in Arabia, specifically in the city of Mecca, in the seventh century C.E. There were some well-established cities, such as Mecca, but the inhabitants of the non-habited spaces were the Bedouin, who...

...Religion on the Field In some schools it is a custom for students to say a prayer before a football game or school events. In the Santa Fe Independent school district a Christian prayer was always said before the game begun. However there were two families from different religions that objected to these prayers and brought suit to the school district. While in New Orleans the prayer was declared unconstitutional by the U.S court of appeals. In Texas a judge said that the prayers should be permitted, and in Atlanta Georgia the U.S court of appeals ruled that the prayers must be permitted before a football game or any other school event because not permitting the prayer would violate the first amendment. There is a lot of confusion on whether the prayers should be permitted or not, because of our first amendment. In this case the school district is trying to find a way to be able to say the prayers without violating the rights of the minority. In the case of the Santa Fe Independent School District V. Doe We see the debate between whether or not a religious event should be allowed to happen on school grounds. Should a religious event such a prayer be allowed before a football game on school grounds? Is it a constitutional violation to allow this event to happen? I believe that it is unconstitutional to not let the students say their prayers before the football games because they have the freedom of speech. Students should be able to say their prayers because it is what they believe...

...Right Employee is a Challenging Process Mary Mac Church Chamberlain College of Nursing In, the 1940’s, it was perfectly legal to refuse to hire, promote, or fire someone because of race, ethnicity gender or religion. The legacy of Pitney Bowes historical leadership and job opportunities provided to African Americans played a pivotal role in decades of change in diversity management. Organizations that realize the advantages diverse employees will increase profits, productivity, long term growth and overall success (Harvey & Allard, 2012). In fact, the civil rights movement established state and federal laws that bar employers from discriminating against employees. The recruitment process involves many steps, which include advertisement, screening, preparation and decision- making. It is important to collect and review a fair amount of applications. It crucial to screen all applicants, analyzing their qualifications, skills and experience. Resumes are very useful however they don’t provide the individuals work ethic. It is critical to interview the most qualified candidates. The Atlanta based Fortune 500 Company is looking for a sales representative that is articulate, sophisticated and knowledgeable about fiber optics. ...is perfectly legal. However when money or special favors is involved, lobbying becomes bribery. Lobbying sounds ok, but is it? “Bribery gets all the bad press, but lobbying is the real danger, because it affects everybody--whether they want it to or not (Maiello, 2009).” 2. What argument could the SLOC members make that the payments made do not fit the definition of an illegal bribe (under the FCPA)? An illegal bribe is money or special favors granted to someone in a position of trust to make a decision in favor of the one offering it. This is murky water here. Are there arguments that support the claim that the offers to the IOC were not illegal bribes? In 1996, I played trombone in the Atlanta Olympic marching band. We were a promotional vehicle for the IOC and the Atlanta Olympic Committee (AOC). From my experience and judgment, the Olympics as a whole are almost a spiritual institution for athletes. The organizers in the AOC wanted to make the experience the best possible for the athletes. I...
