...In this week’s assignment we chose The Hershey Company, also known as Hershey’s, as our organization of interest. As a team we found the longevity and success of The Hershey Company intriguing, for this reason, we decided to research the operations of the organization. The founder of The Hershey Company, Milton Hershey, started his first candy business in 1876. In 1903, The Hershey Company broke ground on their first manufacturing factory Hershey’s, (n.d.). Today Hershey’s can be found in 90 countries all over the world (Hershey’s, n.d.). Over the years the company has expanded in many ways from the products they sell to manufacturing plants and locations. The paper will outline what process design (make to order, make to stock, or batch), The Hershey Company uses in the manufacturing of their products. We will identify two manufacturing processes that we found unique and interesting about The Hershey Company. As a global confectionary leader The Hershey Company’s best known of its eighty brands are Hershey’s, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Kisses, Jolly Rancher and Twizzler’s licorice (Hershey’s, n.d.). The company has also expanded into other markets such as grocery goods, chocolate syrup, and breathe mints. Annual Revenue for the company is over $7.1 billion and over 13,000 employees staff its operations (PR Newswire, 2014). In 2012, Hershey built a new plant which operates with the latest technology 24 hours a day in its original home town with its same name. The...

...Organizational Change in Modern Corporations – Success Strategies and Failures Alphonso Varnado University of Saint Francis Abstract Drastic change can be hard for any organization. Even the most powerful leader must realize that it takes the cooperation of others to implement drastic change. This paper looks at effective strategies for drastic change in organizational culture and examines case studies where this has worked and where it has failed. Keywords: Organizational Culture, Change Management Organizational Change in Modern Corporations – Success Strategies and Failures What is Change Management anyway? “The management of change and development within a business or similar organization”. In other words, it is the systematic approach to dealing with change, both from the perspective of an organization and on the individual level. General Principles of Organizational Change Management It is the leader’s responsibility to manage change. Employees are only responsible for doing their best. Leaders must provide the necessary tools for employees to execute the change they desire. Change should not be enforced on the people (Kotter, 2008). Whenever people are forced to do things without engagement, there will be problems? Workshops can ease this burden and develop a collective understanding to the new polices approach, and its effect on their lives and work. Surveys are another way to minimize distrust amongst staff. The employee’s direct supervisors must facilitate...

...In Cold Blood Truman Capote I. The Last to See Them Alive The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there." Some seventy miles east of the Colorado border, the countryside, with its hard blue skies and desert-clear air, has an atmosphere that is rather more Far West than Middle West. The local accent is barbed with a prairie twang, a ranch-hand nasalness, and the men, many of them, wear narrow frontier trousers, Stetsons, and high-heeled boots with pointed toes. The land is flat, and the views are awesomely extensive; horses, herds of cattle, a white cluster of grain elevators rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveler reaches them. Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. Not that there's much to see simply an aimless congregation of buildings divided in the center by the main-line tracks of the Santa Fe Rail-road, a haphazard hamlet bounded on the south by a brown stretch of the Arkansas (pronounced "Ar-kan-sas") River, on the north by a highway, Route 50, and on the east and west by prairie lands and wheat fields. After rain, or when snowfalls thaw, the streets, unnamed, unshaded, unpaved, turn from the thickest dust into the direst mud. At one end of the town stands a stark old stucco structure, the roof of which supports an electric sign - dance - but the dancing has ceased and the advertisement has been dark for several years. Nearby is another building...

...Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Nuland, The New Republic 3/462 “Anne Fadiman’s phenomenal first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, brings to life the enduring power of parental love in an impoverished refugee family struggling to protect their seriously ill infant daughter and ancient spiritual traditions from the tyranny of welfare bureaucrats and intolerant...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade...
