How would you define the function and responsibilities of a technical leader? What knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) must a technical leader possess as the subject matter expert (SME) in a given discipline to lead a group or organization?

Technical leaders are expected to lead projects and teams that inspire new technological advances. Technical expertise is just a small piece of the puzzle. Leadership skills encompass an extensive spectrum of influence. The end state of an organization is to be successful. The measurement for success is through customer value and the margin of gain or profit.

Leaders must take an active approach to a project. Leaders must know the details. It is their duty to influence the decision-makers within their organization. Technical leaders understand technology better than non-technical managers do, and they understand the details better than most technical managers do (Hinkle, 2007).

Communication is an important function as a technical leader. It is important that the leader communicate with his staff and customers to ensure that his vision is understood. It is important as a technician to at times break things down in laments terms for everyone to understand how things work, what issues may arise, and how to combat those issues if they do occur. Communication creates a direct link to customer satisfaction and trust.

It is important for a leader to identify and harvest leadership characteristics of peers and subordinates to enhance organizational performance. Attrition is likely for many different reasons. By encouraging team building concepts and a rotational project lead, employees may feel more comfortable stepping up to apply for the new leadership position. This allows those positions to be filled organically rather than looking for outside hire when these positions become
