...AFRICAN PRINTS IN RETROSPECT: A CASE FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT Abstract The paper investigated the nature of machine-produced fabric commercially termed African prints by focusing on a select sample of these prints. It established that the general design characteristics of this print are an amalgam of mainly Javanese, Indian, Chinese, Arab and European artistic tradition. It also explores the desirability and choice of certain design characteristics discovered in a wide range of African textile traditions from Africa south of the Sahara and their application with possible design concepts Akinwumi (2008:3) African print was developed from batik, the latter being of Indian origin. Batik diffused from India to Indonesian islands and Japan while its subsequent perfection was made possible by the Javanese before the thirteen century. Because batik was of Hindu origin, its sacred importance was associated with women’s birth, initiation, marriage etc. The Javanese developed a high level of batik artistry before they were colonized. They produced many symbolic and non-symbolic patterns. While under the rule of the Indians, Chinese, Islamic clerics and the Dutch, the Javanese were influenced by an influx of new ideas from the cultures of their overlords. Consequently, some Chinese mythology and Buddhist themes were borrowed and incorporated in their batik. And greater development of geometric designs was made manifest more than before during the short period Java was made an Islamic state...

...“I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded,” is the quote that I choose to open up my This I Believe essay and now I have branched that out into a digital story. My digital story has the songs “Cinema” and “Gotta Have It” and it is about the struggles that Lebron James had to endure in order to get his championship ring. The theme of my digital story and essay is, in retrospect, failure is success. The style of my essay and digital story is anecdotal. The combination of the theme and style in my essay and digital story is what helps incorporate the “So What?” First, already know that the theme of my essay and digital story is, in retrospect, failure is success but now I have to show you how it shown in my pieces. The theme is shown in my essay by the sentence, “The only way to learn how to ride a bike is to fail multiple times and to learn from your mistakes.” This quote from my essay depicts how the them is shown in it by giving and anecdotal explanation on how no matter how many times you might fail, the information that you gather will help you out in the end. The theme is shown in my digital story from the several pictures of Lebron James training after he lost the NBA finals in 2011 and which lead to winning the finals in 2012 because he learned from his mistakes/ failure and he succeeded. Next, you already know that the theme of my essay and digital story is anecdotal but now I have to show you it is shown in my pieces. A quote from my This...

...The Self-Unseeing – Notes This lilting, serious, elegant poem illustrates several of the salient qualities in Hardy’s lyrical poetry. We see here, for example, what has been justly termed his “natural piety” – the “he” and the “she” are his father and mother. We notice how the subject of beloved things in retrospect calls out here, as it seldom failed to do, the poet’s lyrical tenderness. The poem illustrates, too, that love of music and the dance which affected Hardy from an early age, and clearly influenced his style. It shows his delicate skill in suffusing pathos with gaiety, his sense of the transient haunting all scenes of present happiness. And, although it is not strongly marked by his well-known idiosyncrasies of manner, it could not be mistaken for any other poet’s writing – “Blessings emblazoned that day; Everything glowed with a gleam” has the authentic Hardy ring. Its themes are the universal emotions of loss and missed opportunity. It starts by describing the setting, then moves on to feelings with which the reader can identify. Here Hardy shows his strengths of setting, voice and tense. The past and present tenses in the first stanza signal that the narrator is talking about past and present simultaneously – a paradox, like the title of the poem. The poem’s narrator exhibits feelings of futility in this view of the past and the dead. The metre/rhyme scheme coupled with the detailed description of setting contributes to its haunting quality. Its ABAB rhyme scheme...

...The Vietnam War between USA with South Vietnam and North Vietnam with Viet Cong had lasted about 10 years and had many significant consequences. Therefore, it’s one of the most important wars in the recent years and has possessed many resonances so far. It is an unforgettable war for the USA because it has unexpectedly lost the war. The USA has lost the war against a fragile, undeveloped country which is North Vietnam. USA has lost the war against a fragile, undeveloped country which is North Vietnam. There has been a lot of controversies about this war so far. These controversies are concentrated on the moral dimension of the war. In other words, the experts and the analysts are concerned about whether this war is just or not. The Vietnam War can’t be considered as just war when we evaluate it with the aid of the Jus Ad Bellum critters. It doesn’t meet the 6 critters such as just cause, comparative justice, legitimate authority, right intention, probability of success and last resort. First of all, the USA doesn’t have a just cause to declare a war against North Vietnam and Viet Cong. In this war, USA struggles against communism and wants to terminate the so-called dangerous activities of the North Vietnam and Viet Cong founded by Ho Min Cinh in South Vietnam. USA doesn’t correct a suffered wrong here although it regards communism as great public evil. Western countries which adopt liberalism disapprove communism and they think that communism have to be removed. In this war, USA...

...and should be rewarded 1st Amendment/Religious Freedom Act The first amendment and religious freedom act allow for accommodations to be made for religious views, beliefs and practices. However, there is hard evidence brought about by the Sherbert V. Verner Supreme Court Case that proves these acts to be somewhat restrictive. Adell Sherbert was not awarded sufficient insurance under the first amendment. She was dedicated to her faith and should be rewarded with the insured fact of keeping her job in spite of not being able to work on Sundays. Luckily, the Supreme Court noted that South Carolina's eligibility restrictions were unjust and didn't allow her to express her religion freely; the main purpose of the Free Exercise Clause. In retrospect, both documents encourage companies to allow for insurance that goes against their personal religions. It is a recurring theme because each person's "Freedom of Religion" is equally important and they should absolutely be insured by their companies, no matter what class, race, ethnicity or ideals. The unconstitutional burden that South Carolina created completely proves how Americans need to be insured to every extent under the Free Exercise Clause/Religious Freedom Act. It must have been relatively easy to deny Sherbert unemployment compensation because she denied paid work, I would too if I knew she blatantly turned the offer down. However, she stayed loyal and true to her religion and decided to turn down the offer. If someone is...

...will increase in purchase power. Consumers will have the opportunity to purchase more and be wealthier. This is with the assumption that “the supply of money is fixed” (Gwartney, et al, 2013, p. 177). Therefore, this power will enable the purchase of more goods and services. The lower price level reduces the demand for money and lowers interest rates. Allowing consumers and businesses to have a smaller amount of money in the bank and still have everything they need. In retrospect businesses will need less money to sustain employee wages, pay taxes and any other business needs. This lower price level gives better opportunity to obtain assets that have high returns. Consumers will be able to purchase those non-necessity items such as cars and businesses can obtain new contracts or expand. American products will be chosen for purchase over products made abroad because of the lower price. This will in turn cause other countries to purchase more from the United States due to the lower price. In retrospect, the rising of the...

DuBrin indicates that “by getting directly involved in the group’s work activities, the leader [we] influence(s) subordinates to hold certain beliefs and to follow certain procedures and processes (DuBrin 250). We had spoken with the presidents of each company early in the process as well as a member of the supply team. At the time, we established deadlines for each team in order to keep the process moving along and each entity seemed to agree with our due dates. Some teams had no issues meeting the deadlines while others constantly struggled. Communication consisted mostly of emails with little face to face meetings. In retrospect, it...

...Statistics in Economics The Rivalry: Wins per Season Phillies vs. Mets Throughout the years two teams laid the groundwork for what would be considered one of the greatest rivalries of all time. Baseball is America’s pastime and one of my favorite sports. I decided to do an in-depth statistical analysis of both team’s histories regarding wins since 1965. Surprisingly both teams, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets, have strong numbers but the Phillies came out on top when comparing both data sets. The Phillies have a mean number of wins at 79.72 and the Mets with a mean of 77.28 wins. So, by looking at these data sets from a comparative angle, the Phillies come out on top with an average of about 2-3 wins per season. Taking a look at the medians, you are able to see that Phillies also have a higher mean of 80.5 wins as opposed to the Mets’ 78 wins. By looking at the easy to find statistical values you are able to see which team has been statistically better throughout the past 45 years. After I took a look at the descriptive statistics I ran three different tests: the F-test, the t-test, and the empirical tests to test for each data set’s normality. The first test that I ran in Excel was the F-test, which is a test comparing statistical models to identify the model that best fits the population from which the data was sampled. My results of the F-test came out with a high variance for each team: the Phillies with 133.41 and the Mets with 220.21...

...Although the job descriptions of interns may differ, the basic expectation of adaptability remains relevant in every instance. I found this notion to be most interesting, as I saw this concept illustrated through my personal experience as well as through that of other interns in other professional disciplines. Having spent five months at Versace, I can confidently advise future interns to focus on the overall benefit they can bring to the organization, rather than focusing on the mundaneness of some assigned tasks. In retrospect, however, perhaps I should have observed the organization more before attempting to analyze my observations. Future interns may also avoid allowing their expectations to cloud their perceptions of the organization; they should seek to understand the interpersonal dynamics before forming an opinion. In order to be successful, an intern should be proactive and be unafraid to communicate lucidly with his/her supervisors. A social-organizational psychology student preparing to enter an internship should consider the suggestions to be observant and flexible in changing situations and environments. Observation of others’ behaviors and norms in the workplace serve as a good example to follow and pays off in person-organizational fit. I was once assigned a task to assist in the reorganization of the office space which the Marketing intern refused to complete. The task was to take a bag of keys and match the correct key to the door lock on each office. Although...

...Irony is extremely prevalent in the story of The Lottery, and its role is slowly revealed as the story progresses. Through the use of setting, characters, character interaction, and symbolism, Jackson is able to create a story in which irony does not create the story, but instead has the story reveal the irony. Using diction, imagery, and readers’ perceptions and associations, ironic elements are emphasized and the analyzation of the story in retrospect proves to be just as insightful as the initial reading. The setting of The Lottery is used as an anchor for the major ironic elements in the story. In the opening paragraph, Jackson uses descriptive language in order to paint a picture of ordinariness for the reader, describing it as...

...Abstract As (Vallone, Thomas, & Vallone, Jacqueline, 2009) observe, the area of wireless power transmission s but an undeveloped area of study. Many a promising applications have been posited for this area, owing to the fact that t provides for the transmission f power over great distances as, along with boundaries, less the need for transmission lines. On juxtaposition with current electronic technology, the latter makes use of microwaves, given that the energy and economic efficiency provides form some leveraging via products which are already in production. In retrospect, the last couple years have seen attempts to develop new technology which would otherwise accommodate this propagating by means of electromagnetic waves, in and around the visual light spectrum. In retrospect, as already mentioned, the technologies herein are but emergent. Introduction Despite the fact that the technology is merely in its infancy, the potential benefits are immense on its attaining of maturation. These could be significant for generations as well as society hitherto, given that on extrapolation, the global population is projected to increase exponentially. Five sixths of the global population currently hails from developing countries. As such, countries the likes of India, China, along with Pakistan are on a campaign to alleviate the standards of living. Per se, such are the trends which hint at a demand for energy of extreme proportions, and whose demand rate is directly proportional...
