Why a Woman Has the Right to an Abortion A monumental debate has proceeded to separate our country since January 22, 1973 when the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court case ruled abortion as legal in the United States. Millions of abortions have been performed since that day, and as a result the two arguing parties have named themselves either pro-choice, or pro-life. Both of these groups have logical reasoning supporting their position, however the impact of this decision goes beyond the life of a child. If that is true, we have a responsibility to protect the planet we live on. With many of our natural resources in America running out, overpopulation is a great concern in our world. We are already the third most populated country with more than 265 million people, and we are at a growing rate of 2.5 million people per year (overpopulation.org). Because we have more people we are losing vital assets such as rural land, which hurts our wild animal population, which then has an effect on our meat and food industry causing prices to be higher, and a potential recession in America. Controlling the population is generally not possible, however legal abortion would create a logical, partial solution to this growing problem. Also, because the United States made abortion legal in 1973, crime rate has since dropped significantly. In the 1980’s when the children who would have been non-aborted would have reached their peak crime committing ages, states who had high abortion rates crime went down 30% more than states with low abortion rates (Steve D. Levitt). Not only would making abortion illegal raise crime rates to what they were before 1973, they would be higher because if abortion was illegal, women would still find ways to perform them. Christians believe abortion should be illegal because it is murdering a child and that defies the bible and the ten commandments. Doesn’t the bible also say sex before marriage and adultery is against the ten commandments? The country has not ruled that those acts are illegal because that would be against personal liberties, but so is infringing on medical rights. Pro-life’s also say that children have the right to a life and the mother is selfish for wanting to end their pregnancy. Actually, children’s medical rights are placed with their parent or guardian until they are eighteen. Further, that personal decision is decided based on that mother’s unique situation and should not be encroached upon. In addition, people against abortion claim that a fetus can feel pain inside the womb and abortions have proved to be excruciatingly painful to it. It has been proven that the cortex needs to be developed for the fetus to feel pain, and the cortex is not even developed until 26 weeks, long after abortions are preformed legally. When examining the impacts of this important decision, legal abortion in America isn’t a perfect option; however it is the realistic
