Disco cemented its place in history with Robert Stigwood’s 1977 film Saturday Night Fever, starring John Travolta, a straight, white, suburban boy. Tony Manero worked in a paint shop in Brooklyn during the day and was the king of his local disco at night, wearing a tablecloth over his silk shirt during dinner so it would not get ruined (Stigwood). The movie was a blockbuster on a massive scale, making John Travolta and the Bee Gees superstars, their soundtrack album the top-selling album of all time, and disco the only thing anyone was talking about. But Saturday Night Fever did more than just expose the commoners to disco. The movie warped disco’s identity almost unrecognizably (Lawrence 130). Travolta became the de facto image of disco.
