The human body is made up of eleven organ systems. The eleven organ systems carry out many different tasks within the body. These systems include the integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, urinary system, and reproductive systems. As important as all of these systems are, I will only discuss the system that the pituitary gland is helpful to. It is called the endocrine system.

The pituitary gland is a pea-sized structure located in the base of the brain behind the sinuses. It is only a small endocrine organ, but its task is to controls many of the important functions in the body. Another task the pituitary gland …show more content…
The pituitary gland is divided into three different lobes which are involved in hormone production. There is the anterior, intermediate, and posterior lobe.

The anterior lobe,which is made up of glandular tissue, produces its own hormones. It is involved in the development of the body, reproduction, and sexual maturation. There are six secretions within the anterior lobe of the gland. One of the secretions is Adrenocorticotropin. This secretion stimulates the production of cortisol, which is a vital stress hormone, by the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are the small glands that sit on top of the kidneys.Cortisol has a number of functions. It promotes normal metabolism, maintains blood sugar levels and blood pressure, provides resistance to stress and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also plays a part in regulation of fluid balance in the body.When we’re under stress, cortisol is produced largely. The second secretion is prolactin. Prolactin stimulates breast milk production after childbirth. It also affects sex hormone levels from ovaries in women and from testes …show more content…
The posterior lobe of the endocrine gland produces antidiuretic hormone, which reclaims water from the kidneys and conserves it in the bloodstream to prevent dehydration. There are only two secretions within the back of the endocrine gland. One secretion is the antidiuretic hormone. It is known as vasopressin. Vasopressin regulates water balance in the body and conserves body water by reducing the amount of water lost in urine. The second secretion is oxytocin. Oxytocin causes milk to flow from the breasts in breastfeeding women, and may also help labor to progress.

Cortisol, thyroxine, oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are hormones controlled by hormones released in the pituitary gland. Thyroxine controls many body functions, including heart rate, temperature and metabolism. It also plays a role in the metabolism of calcium in the body. Oestrogen facilitates growth of the tissues of the sex organs and other tissues related to reproduction. Oestrogen also acts to strengthen bones and has a protective effect on the heart. Progesterone promotes the changes in the uterus that occur in preparation for the implantation of a fertilised ovum and prepares the breasts for milk production. Testosterone is responsible for the characteristics of the masculine body, including hair growth on the face

One of those changes occurred in the late 1960s when the development of immunosuppressive drugs made it possible for people to donate organs to patients who were not related to them (Fentiman 43). This discovery benefited many patients in need of a transplant, but also opened the door to controversies such as organ sales. The first proposal to sell organs came from Virginia physician Dr. H. Barry Jacobs in 1983. He suggested that whoever could afford to buy a kidney should be allowed to do so. As a result of Dr. Jacobs’s proposal, Congress banned the sale of organs in 1984, and that law still exists today (Meckler A.1). Another change in organ donation happened in 1968, when the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act was introduced. This tried to increase the donor pool and make donating a person’s organs at his or her time of death easier. The act, however, did not raise the donation pool enough to keep up with the organ transplant waiting list (Fentiman 43). The waiting list is the topic of another controversy that has been occurring for several years and still exists today.
