• How would you describe the role of a manager?
• Do you think the definitions given in the assigned articles and the video describe the role accurately based on your own experience?

Responses:
1.The role of the manager is to be a mentor, an advisor and a leader. As explained in Nelson Mandela’s quote “A leader …is like a shepherd” and in Linda Hills’ article; a manager should be capable to lead and at the same time advice and train its employees so they are prepared to act and respond to business challenges and be creative.
As Julie Gebauer explains in the video, managers should perform tasks at the group level not at the individual level. The manager should approach every task given thinking what would be beneficial to the group and the overall company. The manager should incentivize team work in its group. Create contexts for learning and development. A manager should always listen to his/her employees, analyze issues, take action, resolve, and motivate employees for improvement.
Based on my own experience, I agree that becoming a manager is a learning process. Managers are not born and it’s not something that can be taught in class. As Ms. Hills mentioned, Managers learn to be a manager by doing it. At my previous company, they have a program called Administrator in Training (AIT).
