Early childhood years are well known to be crucial years in forming a child’s educational foundation, as well as prominent years for fostering emotional and social development. Empathy, a key component in rewarding interpersonal relationships, is fostered during this time by parents, teachers, and other role models for the young child. While empathy leads to a deeper understanding of morality and emotions, the best form of teaching empathy to children is a topic that is lacking exploration. The purpose of this research is to test the effect of verbal correction on fostering the growth of empathy in young children, allowing researchers and caregivers alike the information they need to better teach children empathy, improving their interpersonal …show more content…
The stronger an empathic connection between citizens, the stronger the community and society as a whole due to increased communication levels and an overall increase in acceptance for one another (Kirmayer, 2008). Aside from fostering a sense of security in the child, providing positive experiences for the child, moments that elicit happiness, and joy aid in developing empathy. According to Coan, Davidson, Frye, Goldsmith, Light & Zahn-Waxler (2009) there is a “positive association between empathy and low-intensity pleasure” allowing children to build and develop empathetic concern by experiencing both the highs and lows of life. Creating a sense of security as well as a happy environment will help mold empathy in children, but is is not the only factors that determine whether or not a child will understand and feel empathy for other humans and living …show more content…

The focus of the material is to encourage children to understand the people and stories behind homelessness in a hope to instil compassion, rather than judgement or fear. Furthermore, the hope of the program is that it encourages children to care deeply for their communities. We created an hour and a half interactive lesson for a Grade 1/2 class at Briar Hill Elementary School with the hope that it would give the children a new perspective on people who do not have homes to live in. The lesson started with us reading the story, The Cardboard Shack Under The Bridge, by Tim Huff, and asking the students many meaningful questions on their interpretations of the pictures and what it means to be homeless. They then rotated around four centres where they got to engage in activities that helped them develop empathy for people who are homeless.
