SanGIS www.SanGIS.org The San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS) is responsible for maintaining a regional geographic information system landbase and data warehouse for the city and county of San Diego. The main function of this GIS is to organize and structure shared geographic data and all automated systems that use that data. The data warehouse maintains several hundred layers of data regarding lots, parcels, roads, bridges, additions, deletions, and updates of county land as well as private land. The main purpose of the application is to create a centralized database pertaining only to the city and county of San Diego. What this does, is contractors, landscapers, and essentially anyone else who is inquiring about data regarding environmental or geographic information, can pay to access the system. For instance, by cooperating with other local agencies, SanGIS can uphold the integrity of geographic information with accuracy and precision for any party that is interested in statistical information, data extractions, data sharing, etc. For an example query of the application, someone could inquire on where the closest fire stations, schools, public libraries, police stations, etc. are, using an interactive map. There are multiple filters to the interactive map; a base map that shows roads, county lines, parcels, and city lines. A second filter to the interactive map is called a dynamic filter. The dynamic filter can be turned on and off by the user and has three categories; districts, ecology, and places. It also includes data such as vegetation and public service stations.
The primary use would be if a company wanted to build a new building in a vacant lot, they would use SanGIS to figure out where the lot is in correlation to exact city, districts for emergency services, county lines for legislative purposes, as well as coordinates for their distribution and location. SanGIS can provide them with all the collective information in a format that is not only accessible, but also structured in a way they can record the data and transfer it easily.
The make up of SanGIS has many contributing factors, or layers. For one, surveyors in the private sector, as well as federal and state contracted surveyors, can submit and withdraw data they get from surveying land to update the database. Contractors and foreman can also submit and withdraw data regarding any rebuilds, build outs, demolition, and road building that has taken place to maintain accuracy and the integrity of the GIS. Cartographers can use satellites to contribute geographic coordinates and landscapes to the GIS and can also withdraw information regarding new roads or bridges to create their maps. These different layers all add to the dynamic and multi-functional use of SanGIS.
