The characters of this story are Ann and her husband, who remains unnamed throughout the story.
The story begins in the late evening with a husband and his wife, Ann, are doing the dishes. As she washes and he dries them, the subject of white people marrying black people comes up.
He feels that it is wrong, since they would never “know” each other, because of their cultural backgrounds and cultural differences. While doing the dishes, Ann, the wife, cuts her hand, the husband rushes to the bathroom to get the first aid kit to help his wife. he cleaned and bandaged her, and continued to do the dishes. He hoped that they were done arguing but she immediately continues with the question “would you marry me if I was black?” the husband gets quite upset now, and bursts out a big no. Ann then rushes into the living room and starts reading a magazine, rapidly going through the pages. The husband started cleaning the entire kitchen, and when he walks out with the garbage, he starts thinking about the argument, and the life they have had together.
When he came in the house Ann was in the bathroom. He apologized through the closed door and promised to make it up to her. When she questioned this, he said he would marry her. She tells him to go to bed, and to turn off the light, as he laid there waiting for her in the darkness, his heart began to pound really fast, just like the first time they were together, or when hearing a stranger in the
