W.S Merwin’s For the Anniversary of My Death and Yusef Komunyakaa’s Facing It both revolve around themes of death. Each author’s approach to the subject is vastly different, yet there are also striking parallels. Both poems were filled with imagery, which caused me to pause and consider how I relate to death, be it my own imminent demise, or the death of those around me. For the Anniversary of my Death, is a poem depicting the tale of a man who realizes that death is unavoidable. Each year as we go about our daily business we all without celebration, pass our individual death anniversaries. We have no way of knowing when this day is and few of us take the time to contemplate this truth. Most of us are living our lives in fear of that day, attempting to get as much life as possible into our allotted time. Few of us take the time to think that it may even be tomorrow, and if so what have we truly accomplished. Facing It tells the story of a Vietnam Veteran visiting the memorial for the first time, he stands facing the memorial, reviewing the names, unconsciously in search of his own name, as though he can’t believe that he has truly survived the war. He is facing the Memorial, but he is also facing his past, facing his humanity. Merriam Webster defines imagery as language that causes people to imagine pictures in their mind. However imagery is more than just pictures in your mind. When I read a good book or poem, I become completely take away, it’s so much better than television or a movie. I can hear the rain falling or the birds chirping. I can taste the fried chicken or the cold lemonade. I empathize with the characters, I have been known to laugh out loud, or cry on many occasion while reading. In my opinion a good use of imagery is an essential attribute of a good writer. In the poems I have chosen to compare there is a significant presence of imagery. While reading The Anniversary of My Death, I could almost feel the relief of a sunny day, smell the fresh air, and hear the wren singing. The writer uses imagery and rhythm to take the reader to a place of melancholy and then enlightenment. The poem is divided into two stanzas which direct the reader to the times before the writer’s death which is like “a lifeless star” and after he dies, when he says the falling of rain will cease and the song of the wren will be heard. The writer seems to truly embrace the idea of his death.

After reading Merwin’s work I wondered if it were not so much about his own death, but death in general. We as humans are on a tireless journey. We go about our lives, eating but not tasting, hearing but not listening, seeing but not really understanding. We tend to take life for granted. Merwin speaks of waving fires and a lightless star. Fires bring about destruction, even the fires that we use to heat our homes, they are burning logs; causing death. Or perhaps the fire is symbolic of Hell, taunting him, showing him what could be waiting after death. The stars that we see at night, the lightless stars, are not alive they are simply burst of gas left from the living stars.
He goes on to speak of the things he will miss when he passes, such as the love of a woman; many of us don’t appreciate the relationships we have in life. We tend to view past relationships as over, done with, no longer relevant. I don’t think that’s true, be it your kindergarten teacher, or your first love, every relationship in life has an impact on the person you are. Merwin reminds the reader that one of the things that will be dearest to us at our time of death will be our past loves.
In closing Merwin writes of the rain ceasing to fall and of hearing the wren’s song. The images this conveyed in my mind were similar to the story of Noah in the bible. Although Merwin only had three days of rain, there was a cleansing of sort. And after the rain there was quiet stillness, with only the sound of birds chirping. It seemed as though like Noah, he had God’s promise that all was well. Then he bowed, as though acknowledging that promise.
Facing It looks at the aftermath of war; death and destruction. We are taken on a journey with the author to visit his fallen comrades, to pay honor to their memory. He contemplates the stories of the other visitors, and reflects on the very real possibility that he could have also been among the tens of thousands of names listed there. He sees a soldier who lost his arm in the war and seems to convey having suffered a loss there also; not an appendage, but perhaps his innocence or peace of mind. He fights the urge to cry, but cannot help it as he has perhaps fought the urge to come to this memorial, but was drawn here still. While reading Facing It, I wondered if the author was writing about facing the images on the memorial, or facing the images in his head from fighting the Vietnam War. There are multiple occurrences of imagery; he speaks of birds of prey and the flash of a brushstroke. The writer observes the similarities between his black skin and the black granite of the wall. This brings to mind, that unlike in previous wars, in the Vietnam War skin color was not a factor.
The use of imagery in this work is fantastic. The “shimmer” of names on a blouse, the ephemeral beauty of brushstrokes that “flash” (in contrast to the booby trap’s “white flash”)—these could represent moments of quiet contemplation at the Wall, but Komunyakaa’s meditations are cut short by the bird’s wings and the threat of the “plane in the sky.” Earlier in the poem, Komunyakaa depended on the stone to “let him go”; this woman walks away of her own accord, leaving the names behind in ways that Komunyakaa cannot. His gaze is uninterrupted, until the bird’s wing intervenes by way of flash and flashback: reflecting the mirrored surface of the granite and the sky, caught in fragments between the jungles of Vietnam and the National Mall. It’s unclear in which context (past or present) we’re meant to see that sky and that plane. Just as the Wall is deliberately positioned between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial to lend it historical context, Komunyakaa’s images and fragmentary syntax help suspend the action between now and then.
Both authors have a grasp of imagery that draws the reader in. In both works the author doesn’t out right state how they feel about death and dying, but the reader is left to draw their own conclusions. In On the Anniversary of my Death, the author seemed to celebrate his impending death, true there are things he would miss about his earthly life, but he looks forward to the peace of death. In Facing It the author seems to have somewhat contrasting feelings about death, he mourns the countless useless deaths of the war, yet seems to question his own survival.
Having read these two works several times, and forming my own interpretations, I feel the need to enjoy my life to the fullest. Take the time to feel the warmth of the sun on my skin, the beauty of the rainbow after a storm. I want to experience true love, I want to travel to Washington and gaze upon the monument myself in respect to the many fallen warriors. I know that everyone makes “bucket lists” and few of us actually do all the things we aspire to in life. The point is, death is unavoidable, we will lose love ones, and we will all eventually die. We must just do what we can with the time we are given.

Civil Liberties

...Free Exercise Clause”, because it upholds the rights of the American people to decide on any religious belief and to be able to exercise their beliefs without getting in trouble with the law. One example of a public policy that is designed to protect the civil liberty is the “moment of silence” in schools. The moment of silence is done in all the schools in the morning during the announcements and there is silence for 60 seconds with no sounds or interruptions. This gives everyone the opportunity to pray, meditate or even just sit and think without being disturbed. I support this policy because everyone has their own right to pray without disturbing the rights of others and those who don’t chose to pray also have the right to sit without disturbing the ones who are praying. The article that I chose to write about was originally written in the American School Board Journal paper and was written by Edwin Darden in 2008. The title of the article is “Is Silence in the Classroom Really Golden”? He explains that having silence in the classroom is great to have but are we having it in our classroom just for religious purposes? He asks if a mandatory “moment of silence” in public schools is for students to relax and get focused for the day ahead, or is it an invitation to pray. One could argue the opposite could be true, is it an opportunity to relax or an excuse to encourage students not to pray? This is the type of issue that the courts struggle with when it comes to these types...

My Volleyball Research Paper

...better player. This is when I knew I wanted to be a volleyball player, and I could not do it without the help from my mom. I would dread waking up at eight in the morning everyday in the humid month of August. My mom dragging me out of bed and taking me to the gym. I would hate sitting on the floor until my body went numb everyday. One practice, I was sitting on the floor dazing off in my young imagination when my mom yelled my name. I jolted out of my daze and walked over to her. Twelve girls were huddled around my mom. They all seemed intimidating. My mom gave me the volleyball, told me to go back to the end line and serve. It seems like an easy task, but when my mom told me if I missed the team would have to run it was not so easy. My hands were sweating and my heart was beating at a...

Eating Habits and Academic Performance of Hrm Students

...On becoming a teacher… By Mary Ann C. Dela Cruz Looking back to the past, I remember the time when my mother told me that it is time for me to go to school to study. I am excited! I enjoy looking into my new pad, notebooks, pencil, and other things that my mother bought me, especially with my new shoes and uniforms. I told to myself, I will enjoy studying as I will learn new things and meet new friends. And when the first day of school starts, I woke up early, ate my breakfast, took a bath, and wore my new uniform and shoes. In few minutes, I am now ready to go to school. Like my other cousins, we are all excited to go to school and meet my first teacher. That day is so special to me, our teacher taught us to how to greet her and our classmates, introduce ourselves to others, and later, she taught us how to sing, count, and the ABCs. I enjoyed my first day and as days passed, I learned more things and observed my teacher on her next move and what is the next instruction to be given to us. Day by day, our activities are getting harder as more things are new to me. I also noticed the different attitudes of my classmates for some our crying looking for their parent. I am just quiet observing them, but what caught my attention is how our teacher reacts on the situations. How she pampered those little kids crying and how she patiently teaches us. There are times that I am thinking how great she was. It seems that she can not to feel the long hours of teaching...

Administrator and Teacher Interview

...Administrator and Teacher Interview Administrator and Teacher Interview Administration and Teacher Interview I remember sitting in the Principles Office one day during recess unsure of why she would want to meet with me. My knees were knocking, my palms were damp, and you could sense the amount of fear that was present in my body. As Ms. Bagakowski called me into her office she reassured me that this was a friendly visit and not one of discipline. She wanted to ask if I would be okay with moving into a different class because I was struggling in my current class. As I look back now on the experience I understand more of the reasons behind the switch and I also understand the role that both my Teacher and the Principle play in the school. The assignment this week was to interview both an Administrator and a Teacher and compare and contract their roles in the education system. I like that you used a personal example. When I went into Ms. Vance’s office I was quickly reminded of the fear I felt waiting for Ms. Bagakowski. Ms. Vance is the Director for Madison Christian Children’s Center in Phoenix, Arizona. As I began the interview Ms. Vance expressed her passion for children and how she became the director of Madison Christian Children’s Center. It wasn’t until she was mother that she really found her true calling to be a Teacher. She ran her own daycare from him and after her children were old enough to attend Preschool she went to work as a Preschool Assistant...

And I agree with it. I was thinking about what teachers and schools and education were all like when I was much younger. I remember teachers who seemed to be on a mission, a sort of crusade to educate, who wanted kids to open their minds to the possibilities around them. They were our counsellors, our mentors, the ones who guided us and listened to our sometimes extremely ridiculous ideas. GANESH KUMAR: Teachers encouraged us and never told us there was anything we couldn’t do. They earned our respect because of their passion for teaching, for the values they inculcated and for the integrity with which they conducted themselves. Were they a different breed? Aren’t there teachers like that anymore? A few of my friends have dedicated their lives to teaching, to illuminating the lives of children who were or are under their care. But I don’t now if there are many others like them out there. Teaching appears to have turned into just another profession. GOWTHAM.C:  Education has become a business – not that ‘business’ is a bad word. ...the world and all the people in it especially those in impoverished countries. I particularly enjoyed how the Balti people influenced Mortenson’s life in such extreme ways. The two prompts that I decided to write on are “Have you ever known anyone like Mortenson” and “Discuss his repeated brushes with failure and how they influence your opinion of Mortensen”. Let me begin by saying Mortenson is an amazing individual. He did something that not many people have the gusto to go through with. He truly loved the Balti people and wanted the make their lives better through education. When I first read this prompt I immediately thought of one of my youth leaders, Cherissa Newton. She hasn’t accomplished anything as substantial as building a school for people in some foreign land. But, she is a social worker who works with underprivileged children each and every day. What Mortenson was on a large scale, helping lots of people all at once, but what Cherissa does is on a small scale, helping individuals over time. ...Journal Assignment Grand Canyon University UNV 501 For my first article I picked an article entitled A Longitudinal Examination of the Link between Youth Physical Fitness and Academic Achievement. Both authors Rebecca London and Sebastian Castrechini work at Stanford University. They are both interested in knowing if the fitness does help achievement, London has done extensive research in this field. They both work at Stanford University. I selected this article because I am very interested in elementary education, and I am also interested in fitness and sports. This article allowed me to see if there was a correlation between students being fit and how they do in the classroom. This article is considered scholarly because both authors did extensive testing and research for this article. I was glad to find that kids who were fit did better in the classroom. My second article was The Significance of Mathematical Knowledge in teaching elementary methods course: perspectives of mathematics teacher educators. It was co-written by Rina and Dov Zazkis. They wanted to see how math teachers used there knowledge to teach a class. I picked this article since I both enjoy math and I am interested in knowing different ways to teach it. ...Writers,” a teacher was needed to teach freshmen English at Woodrow Wilson High School and Erin Gruwell took on that challenge. As it turned out, it was nothing like what she imagined it to be. There was racial segregation in the classroom and all her students had problems outside and inside of school. That however, did not stop her from being passionate about her job. She used new techniques to help her students become interested in the class while learning and made many sacrifices for those kids which no other teacher was willing to do. Although everyone thought the kids in room 203 were the “unteachables”, Mrs. Gruwell used her own ways to educate them and made a huge impact to those students’ lives including her three of her most difficult students: Eva, Jamal, and Marcus. When the bell rang for class, Mrs. Gruwell’s expectations went down the drain as most of her students came in her class late and the ones that showed up displayed disrespect and no interest for school. Even though her students were not what she expected them to be, she found a way to interest them into learning using her own unique ways. She entertained them in many ways such as music, and using music lyrics to teach instead of poetry that bored the whole class. She made the class time fun by having many activities and gave each of the students their own journals to write in and share about their everyday lives. Since the school was not willing to give students books to read because of the limited budgets...

Report on Ways in Which School Prepares You for the World Outside

...Report on the ways in which school prepares us, the students, for the world outside Introduction This report is about the ways in which our school prepares us, the students, for the world outside of school. I have researched this by asking numerous students of their opinions, and also by asking some of the teachers how they try to prepare students for their later lives. I also gave teachers an opinion poll where they selected how much they did/did not agree with statements made. Findings * From asking the opinions of students of how well school prepares them for later life, I have found that the general view is that school does not prepare you for later life on the whole and that it only prepares you for work life and teaches you nothing about other crucial elements of life, such as managing money. * Teachers, on the whole as seen from the opinion poll, strongly agree that the current education system, and how it is delivered, prepares you fully for future life. * Some students believe that teachers have the opinion that school fully prepares you for life outside of school because they have not experienced a career like they are teaching their students because they came straight from university and went into working * Despite the general consensus from teachers that the school prepares students for later life fully, some teachers believe that the education system on the whole does not prepare students for life at all because as the students go further...
