For this forum post, I choose Jane Goddall’s book “Seed of Hope”. In Seed of Hope, Jan Goodall and contributor Gail Hudson seemingly borrowed sentences and paragraphs from multiple sources to include Wikipedia without citing original material. For instance, according to the Washington Post Seeds of Hope contains language from Wikipedia in its discussion of 18th-century Philadelphia botanist John Bartram”. In Seed of Hope Goodall writes: “ ‘Bartram’s Boxes,’ as they came to be known, were regularly sent to Peter Collinson for distribution to a wide list of European clients.” The Wikipedia entry reads: “Bartram’s Boxes as they then became known, were regularly sent to Peter Collinson every fall for distribution in England to a wide list of

Macbeth Analysis

...Lady Macbeth. All elements of motivation lead up to the climax of the play: the murdering of King Duncan in Act II. What plants the seed of motivation for Macbeth (who later motivates his female counterpart, Lady MacBeth) is introduced first and foremost in Act I, scene i with the three weird sisters. The witches declare they will meet again when the “hurlyburly” (I.i.l.3), or storm, is done upon a “heath” (I.i.l.7), or open land covered in small shrubs, to meet with Macbeth. In Act I, scene iii, the three weird sisters meet with Macbeth as they predicted in scene i. “All hail Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!” (I.iii.l.50) cries the third witch, announcing the prophecy of Macbeth to Macbeth himself. This prophecy proposed is similar to the prophecy in the Harry Potter series that motivates the infamous antagonist, Lord Voldemort, to kill the protagonist Harry Potter in order to fulfill the prophecy that stated a boy was born (Harry) with the power to vanquish Lord Voldemort and his power. Like Macbeth, Voldemort had to eliminate (or attempt to) Harry so he could get what he wanted: to be an unstoppable evil force. Macbeth had to eliminate King Duncan to get what he wanted: to be king. The three weird sisters telling Macbeth that he is destined to be king is what plants the seed of motivation in Macbeth’s mind but what waters that seed is not yet revealed until Act I, scene iv when King Duncan, the current king, declares his son Malcolm to be heir to his throne. When Macbeth...

Watering the Wasteland

...Land In T.S. Eliot’s poem, The Waste Land, he compares the life of a modern man to a “waste land” in need of rebirth and recovery. Richard Schwartz, a scholar of T.S. Eliot’s work, concluded that, “Perhaps one meets this condition due to the lack of water, which becomes symbolic of the lack of hope Eliot had in the state of the world at this time” (Schwartz).  While not spelled out in black and white to the reader, one cannot miss the constant, conflicting theme of both the life giving and the destructive attributes that water plays in The Waste Land.  Eliot writes this poem as if it was water itself: free flowing with constant change. In the first section of the poem, “The Burial of the Dead”, the poet describes the parched land to be lifeless and arid. The trees are dead, the ground is dry, and the rocks are desolate. Overall, the setting is austere. It is at this point that Eliot brings in the dual representation of water. He writes, “the dry stone no sound of water [makes]” (Eliot). By referring to Moses getting water from the rocks in scriptural times, Eliot emphasizes the lack of water in the land both spiritually and physically. Here the reader senses Eliot’s overall lack of hope. T.S. Eliot uses water as a symbol of life. Without it one’s whole world would be a “waste land”. It categorizes water as life giving fuel for fertile ground and the opportunity for new growth. The rain at the end of the poem signifies the start of a new beginning and the washing away of one's...

...INTRODUCTION • Attention Getter- Did you know that sixty percent of the food you eat contains one or more genetically modified ingredients? This percentage continues to grow every year, but could increase if the FDA lowers their already negligent requirements on GMFs, making it easier to distribute genetically modified food. • Topic- The controversy over genetically modified food • Ethos and Audience Adaptation- As an organic gardener and a concerned citizen, I know how difficult it is to find seeds that have not been genetically modified or encountered genetically modified organisms. Aside from this personal reason, I have researched genetically modified food for the past two weeks and have read thirty articles and seven books regarding the subject. As college students, most of us are not concerned with how our food is grown or the farmers who grow them. But in an age where food is no longer produced naturally, it is imperative that you know how safe our food is and the repercussions of decisions made by biotechnologists, the FDA, and the consumer, who all drive the market of GMFs and stock your local grocery. • Preview- In my speech I will go over what genetically modified foods are, where they are found, the risks and benefits, and why the labeling of genetically modified food remains problematic. BODY 1) What are genetically modified foods? a) GMFs are made by a technique called gene splicing b) Gene splicing A. Target organism’s DNA is cut...

10 Reasons Why We Don’t Need Gm Foods

...10 REASONS WHY we don’t need GM foods With the cost of food skyrocketing – hitting not just shoppers but the poor and hungry in the developing world – genetically modified (GM) foods are once again being promoted as the way to feed the world. But this is little short of a confidence trick. Far from needing more GM foods, there are urgent reasons why we need to ban them altogether. 1. GM foods won’t solve the food crisis A 2008 World Bank report concluded that increased biofuel production is the major cause of the increase in food prices.1 GM giant Monsanto has been at the heart of the lobbying for biofuels (crops grown for fuel rather than food) — while profiting enormously from the resulting food crisis and using it as a PR opportunity to promote GM foods! “The climate crisis was used to boost biofuels, helping to create the food crisis; and now the food crisis is being used to revive the fortunes of the GM industry.” — Daniel Howden, Africa correspondent of The Independent2 “The cynic in me thinks that they’re just using the current food crisis and the fuel crisis as a springboard to push GM crops back on to the public agenda. I understand why they’re doing it, but the danger is that if they’re making these claims about GM crops solving the problem of drought or feeding the world, that’s bullshit.” – Prof Denis Murphy, head of biotechnology at the University of Glamorgan in Wales3 commercialization, genetic engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop yields...

Monsanto

...corporate giant that genetically modifies animals and crop seeds. On their website, they come across a deeply committed humanitarian organization that provides an ecologically sustainable answer to global hunger and malnutrition. The sad reality is that Monsanto is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and perhaps one of the most unethical corporate giants in the world today. I will argue that Monsanto is on a power trip, and that they have a hidden agenda that has nothing to do with compassion, ecology or human hunger, and everything to do with greed. In the following paragraphs, I will provide a brief history of Monsanto. Then I will examine some of the promises made in their marketing propaganda, and provide evidence that these promises are little more than blatant lies. Monsanto started out in 1901 developing a highly controversial artificial sweetener called saccharine. Monsanto eventually shifted their focus to genetically modified plants and animals. They are still a major chemical production corporation, developing and marketing Roundup and several other herbicides, Bovine Growth Hormone, and genetically modified seeds. Among the most widely recognized of their genetically modified products include corn, soy and canola. These seeds have a gene inserted that makes them resistant to Monsanto's own herbicide called Roundup. These seed crops are called Roundup Ready. The purpose of Roundup is to destroy weeds that threaten crops. Seeds that are Roundup Ready can be heavily sprayed with Roundup...

Critical Book Review

...Critical Book Review Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction Michelle Beel Liberty University Psych 307 Summary Dr. Mark Lasser’s book “Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction” gives insight to those who suffer from sexual addiction and to the families, friends and other people in their lives. Dr. Mark Lasser has chosen to write this book, to share with others his personal struggle and victory with sexual addiction. Dr. Lasser has written this book from a Christian view, to give other individuals hope in a difficult and growing disease, which is taking control and destroying our families. Lasser defines sexual addiction as “a sickness involving any type of uncontrollable sexual activity, and because the addict cannot control his or her sexual behavior negative consequences eventually result.” (Lasser, 2004, pp 23) Lasser goes on to state that this secret sin has existed for years, since the beginning of time, and it still to this day continues to be “misnamed, mistreated, ignored or completely misdiagnosed, and even though it has wounded, killed and humiliated countless individuals people still believe it doesn’t exist”(Lasser, 2004, pp 15) Lasser describes sexual addiction as a “secret sin which grows from seeds planted in childhood and symptoms go undetected for years” (Lasser, 2004, pp 15), being that this is seen as normal developmental phase, going untreated it becomes worse over time, having grave consequences on the individual. Dr. Lasser further points out;...
