Abstract
Our self esteem is how we view ourselves. Self esteem is a vital part of everyone’s life. So many different factors in life affect a person’s self esteem. The way people are raised can greatly contribute to how they will let life’s dealings affect their self esteem. Self esteem levels vary from person to person because everyone has a different upbringing and different life struggles. Low self esteem can lead to all sorts of problems like depression. There is also such thing as high esteem which can also bring on problems. Being that a person’s self esteem can be dangerously low there are lots and lots of information available to help raise ones self esteem to healthy levels. A person’s self esteem, whether high or low can bring a lot of negativity to their lives if they are not carful.

Running Head: SELF ESTEEM PG. 3 When talking about self esteem so many different things come to mind. Self esteem is a major emotion that everyone walking this earth has to deal with. Life could and would be so different for some of us if we didn’t have self esteem to worry about. In some ways you can say that ones self esteem will determine what kind of life they will live. Self esteem is something that everyone has which is why everyone is unique in their own way. Self esteem is one thing that can be broken and repaired all through time and patience. So many questions are asked about self esteem like how does it affect your everyday life or even your childhood. Questions like those examples will be explored throughout this paper. Just exactly what is self esteem? Self esteem is the respect or the impression a person gives to their selves. If you do not value yourself how will you be able to value others? If you don’t respect yourself you are labeled to have a low self esteem. Self esteem enables you to have the right attitude to succeed at home, work, school, and at life in general. People have gone as far as to equate self esteem with egoism, arrogance, conceit, narcissisms, and a sense of superior a trait leading to violence. (Reasoner, 2010) Those who are labeled to have a high self esteem generally have a higher level of respect for their selves. Being that self esteem is how we look at ourselves, our self worth, we tend to also think that is also the publics’ view of us. In many ways our self esteem helps us figure out whether or not our lives need changing or not. As we grow up from children into adults we are taught all sorts of things to be able to keep a good self esteem. Many of our parents used to reward us when we did things well or correctly. The rewards and praise they gave us were to keep us motivated Running Head: SELF ESTEEM PG. 4 to keep doing such a good job when we things well. These rewards that we receive are to help boost our self esteem and ensure that it never drops. You may have never noticed how great it made and makes you feel when something you have done is acknowledged. Parents have to teach their children about self esteem and just exactly what it is. Positive self esteem is important because when people experience it, they feel good and look good, they are effective and positive, and they respond to other people and themselves in health, positive, growing ways. (Clarke, 1998) The way you’re raised can help mold your self esteem. By the time we reach adulthood our self esteems have pretty much been set to fit just who we are. The way we are taught, the things we have to experience, and the path that we choose all are major factors in how high or low our self esteems are. Self esteem is something that we are working on from the time we begin to develop our own personalities. But everyone has their own opinion about how self esteem is developed or even maintained. There is a lot of research being done to answer all these questions about what exactly makes self esteem so important to people now than ever before. Whether self esteem has to do with an abiding sense of worthiness as a person or the experience of being able to solve problems competently, or both, self esteem is intensely personal, in part because it says something about who we are and how we live our lives. (Mruk, 2006) It is often helps us learn new things about ourselves and shows us how we all are very unique individuals. So far we see just how important self esteem is to life. It is a part of your personality that is most impressionable on anybody that you may encounter without your Running Head: SELF ESTEEM PG. 5 life and in part that is what makes it so very important. Self esteem affects your happiness and almost every other emotion you may have. Besides happiness another major emotion that self esteem greatly affects is your confidence. You have to have confidence in all you do so that others will also feel confident when working with you. As stated before no one can value you if you don’t value you yourself. With confidence, positivity, and a good self esteem you can achieve anything you have set out to you. Since your self esteem reflects who you are in so many ways you can say it somewhat a part of your self image. This is the image that you present to the world every time you leave your house and only you can present it how you want the world to perceive you and who you want the world to know you as. Your self image and self esteem can lead to life satisfaction when they are both positive. Life satisfaction does not come from money or material things but it comes from what you do and how you use what you have. Even when all things seem to be positive they can always be improved but you should try to enjoy your achievements once you obtain them. (Perera, n.d.) It’s been mentioned several times through this reading how there are two sides to self esteem. There is good self esteem which is when people seem to be satisfied with their self and there is low self esteem where people feel they have no self worth. They feel worthless although they have all the confidence in the world with certain matters. To suffer from low self esteem a person never sees the positive things that maybe right in front of their faces instead they worry about the negative. So many people are suffering form low self esteem and they have no idea what to do to fix this problem. When not careful, a person with low self esteem can become very depressed. “Their thought about Running Head: SELF ESTEEM PG. 6 themselves are primarily negative, their feelings depressed. (Guest, 1984) On the other hand those with a high self esteem tend to not a problem with slipping into depression. When a person has a high self esteem they have lots of confidence and self respect that people see when they meet that person. A high self esteem is a good thing but sometime it can be very a bad thing also. People have referred to those with a high self esteem as cocky and arrogant when they at times are not the truth. It can be a bit overbearing at times but there is nothing wrong with knowing who you are and what you want in this life. Not saying that those with a high self esteem have life all together but when you know what you want out of life you know what you have to do to get it so go after it. Life is always full of surprises that some people just do not know what to do when these surprises come their way and at times like these it will be made very clear the difference between those with high and low self esteems. In conclusion, I feel as though I support the idea that self esteem is a major emotion that makes each of us unique in our own ways and is something that we work on all of our lives to make right. Also I do believe that the way we are taught the facts of life as children make a huge difference in whether we will have a high or low self esteem. Being that self esteem is apart of your self image we all should learn to be more positive and judgmental upon ourselves. One’s self esteem can change with life’s events and with that being said that is why I feel the findings I can support. If life had no affect on a person’s self esteem then how could things like the way they were raised and things they have experienced be the start of the whether or not they will have a low or high self esteem. Researchers may never know the full aspect of all the factors that contribute to Running Head: SELF ESTEEM PG. 7 the make up of the emotion “self esteem” but they have found some fairly reasonable ideas. Life is full of mystery and wonder as to why we as human beings go through the emotions we do and how they came about. But on thing is true, your self esteem is what makes you who you are and no one can ever take that from you.
