...2. Personal Development Plan 2.1 Communication Skills Communication is ‘the act of conveying a message from one person or group to another person or group’ (McKee 2012). It is important to have good communication skills, particularly in business, as it is highly likely that I will be working with lots of other people and I must be able to communicate well with them to get jobs done properly. At the moment I would rate my communication skills as satisfactory, with room for improvement. The resources used to help me come to this decision are; an online communication test, asking my peers and looking at the checklist for effective communication (Exhibit 4.20, McKee 2012) to make my own personal judgement. After reading my results from an online test (Mind-tools, 2013) I have concluded that although the ability to be a strong communicator is there, there are certain aspects of communication that I struggle with a lot. Firstly, I struggle with considering how the recipient will read my message. I often find myself making assumptions that people understand what I am trying to say, because it makes sense in my own head. I generally can be quite ignorant towards how other people perceive me and the message I am trying to convey. This article was also included as Reading 1.5 in the sixth edition of Negotiation: Readings, Exercises and Cases by Lewicki, Saunders, and Barry. This article provides an excellent overview of negotiation techniques, avoiding impasses, and avoiding the pitfalls of hidden assumptions. This article is written for practitioners that conduct negotiations or plan to conduct negotiations in the future. The authors’ do not provide any reference to the academic literature (or any references at all). The portions of this article that cover negotiation techniques and avoiding impasses seem to provide a very thorough list of techniques, but the description of these techniques is generally limited to only one or two paragraphs. The portion of the article that describes avoiding the pitfalls of hidden assumptions is vague and lacking in substance. In addition, there is a glaring factual error in one of the examples provided by the authors, which may imply that there are other errors in this article. Despite these issues, Nierenberg and Calero (2009) have provided an excellent introductory overview of negotiation techniques and techniques to avoid impasses.
