...the story of the ship of Theseus. In this story, a man named Theseus docked his ship and over time, he and the ship, grew old and weak. Over time, the ship started to fall apart and needed new parts until eventually all the original parts were replaced with new ones. This newly renovated ship is the first ship to consider. There is also a second ship that was reconstructed from all the original pieces of the old ship that had been set into a separate warehouse and put back together. We now have two ships: the renovated ship (created by replacing the old parts with new) and the reconstructed ship (created by reassembling the original pieces that had been removed). The question is: Which ship, the renovated or the reconstructed, is the original ship of Theseus? Whenever one makes an identity claim, such that two things are the same and share all the same properties, one usually uses two different descriptions to explain such phenomena. For example, "Mark Twain is Samuel Clemmons". Mark Twain is the author that most people know for writing The Adventure of Tom Sawyer, but this was his pen name, not his actual name; thus, making Mark Twain a descriptive name, but nevertheless having the same identity as Samuel Clemmons. Back to the ship of Theseus, the problem lies when trying to differentiate which ship is the original ship based on the principle of identity. Are the two ships the same as the original ship with only different descriptions? Is one the original ship while the other...

...Ship Building Industry of Bangladesh The history of indigenous shipbuilding in Bangladesh goes back a long way. It is one of the early industries developed in Bengal based on its old business of building boats and sea vessels. Bangladesh has a strong background in building ships since ancient times. It is little known today that Bangladesh was the center of building ocean-going vessels in Asia between the 15th and 17th century. In the early 19th century, the shipyards of Chittagong built many commercial ships of up to 1,000 tons and also British navy vessels that participated in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Due to this historic prosperous background and also a natural geographical advantage, there are presently more than 200 shipbuilding and ship-repair yards in Bangladesh. | Ship Building Industry in Bangladesh | Prospect of Shipbuilding Industry in Bangladesh: The history of indigenous shipbuilding in Bangladesh goes back a long way. ...The Last Suffering Ship Reflection Dustin Teuton PHL/251 AUG 25, 2014 Robert DuBose The Last Suffering Ship Reflection The illness has taken its first life and people are starting to panic. By this point the crew has done all they can do to get the repairs done pushing them self to exhaustion. The nurses and helpers are tenting to all the patients and distributing the vaccine as fast as possible and to the right patients. I believe the way they are only giving half doses out and waiting to see who doesn’t show signs of getting better before giving the full dose is working and an affective way to calm more people down. I would try and isolate patients from non-sick passengers as much as possible to help prevent spread. For ship security most cruise lines or any kind of passenger ship should and would have a security team even if its trained crewmembers. They would also have a brig on board the ship for any type of crime that was committed, so in the case of the passengers who are starting to get edgy and wild trying to find the medication on there own and attacking crew members, I would have the security team deal with them in a manner that is stern but professional to show the rest of the passengers that in this case acting like a mad man and attacking crew to find the medication is going to land you a chance card straight to the brig. The captain should be updated by the doc every so often by a runner just to know what is going on with the illness. His main...

...craftsmanship in boat building over many centuries and transferred this artistic skill to subsequent generations across different cluster of population. Historical records say that Chittagong port was the best centre of building ocean-going vessels in the middle of the 15th century. Even in the 17th century, the entire fleet of ships of the Sultan of Turkey was built at Chittagong. Also in 1805, the British Navy built ships at Chittagong for the famous battle of Trafalgar. However, with the passage of time, the glory of shipbuilding in this region began to fade. Shipbuilding revived again when a number of local entrepreneurs of Bangladesh brought name and fame for the country by developing potential in shipbuilding by handing over some ocean-going vessels to overseas buyers from Denmark, Finland and Mozambique. Bangladeshi shipbuilders have also handed over few ice-class vessels to a German company and more vessels are going to be delivered by the next few years. Thus shipbuilding in Bangladesh is marching forward in a way to securing a firm position in the world market and at the same time, the country is returning slowly to its past tradition of building ships for foreign countries. Some leading local shipyards like Ananda and Western Marine are now engaged in building over 40 small to medium category vessels worth about $0.6 billion, mainly for European buyers. Bangladesh is blessed with 9,000 sq km of territorial waters, 720-km long coastline and 200,000 sq km of Exclusive Economic...

...Imagine being out to sea for your first time onboard a Carnival Cruise ship on a three day/four night cruise to the Western Caribbean. The weather is perfect, the seas are calm, and outside on the sundeck the entertainment on board the ship (along with a few mixed drinks) relaxes all of your worries away when all of a sudden you smell something that you shouldn’t when you are 150 miles away from land; smoke. Smoke caused by a fire in the engine room on the Carnival Cruise Ship Triumph. That’s exactly what passengers told reporters after returning to port. What happened? What caused the fire? Did response crews respond quick enough to prevent the spread of the fire? Were the appropriate maintenance checks completed as scheduled? This case study will examine these questions and others in an attempt to identify potential risk associated with passenger vessels. The Problem Improper Maintenance Upkeep In December of 2011, the Staff Chief Engineer Handing-Over (SMS Procedures, 2011) reported that three of the six Diesel Generators were...

...Proceedings of MARTEC 2010 The International Conference on Marine Technology 11-12 December 2010, BUET, Dhaka, Bangladesh STUDY ON SOME COMPETITIVE PARAMETERS FOR SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH N. M. Golam Zakaria, M.M. Rahaman and Kh. Akhter Hossain Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh gzakaria@name.buet.ac.bd ABSTRACT Despite Bangladesh has glorious history & heritage as a shipbuilding nation since ancient time, shipbuilding has been in focus only from the last couple of years. The optimism about this industry arose from the success attained by a number of local entrepreneurs who brought the name and fame to Bangladesh as a country with great potentials in shipbuilding by building and handing over some ocean-going vessels to overseas buyers. Since then, the shipbuilding in Bangladesh did not have to look back and now new opportunities are knocking at the door to flourish this industry further. However, due to global nature of this industry, an assessment of suitability to modern shipbuilding in terms of global standard is of prime importance. This paper focuses on studying some crucial competitive factors like labour skill, labour availability, labour man-hour, labour cost & productivity for local shipbuilding which are the inherent part for expansion of this industry. The analysis also focuses on the existing access to the resources like materials, knowledge and capital for shipbuilding...

...Your Guide to Tackle Emergency Situations On Board Ships An emergency situation on ship must be handled with confidence and calmness, for haste decisions and “jumping to conclusions” can make the matters even worse. Efficient tackling of emergency situations can be achieved by continuous training and by practical drills onboard vessel. However, it has been seen that in spite of adequate training, people get panic attacks and eventually do not do what they should in an emergency situation. As far as the seafarer is concerned, first and foremost, he or she must be aware of the different types of emergency situations that can arise on board ship. This would help in understanding the real scenario in a better way, and would also lead to taking correct actions to save life, property, and environment. We have prepared a brief instruction guide that must be given to all the seafarer onboard to tackle different emergency situations. Emergency Situation Guide Officers and crew should familiarize themselves thoroughly with the Fire Training Manual and the training manual on Life Saving Appliances of the ship. General Alarm In case of a general alarm: * Rush to muster station with life jacket, immersion suit, and act according to the vessel’s Muster Lists. * Act as per the emergency explained by the in charge officer. Fire alarm In case of a fire alarm: * Inform Officer On Watch. * Check if it is a false or true alarm. * Report back of findings...

...Ships have been used for a countless number of centuries and for many different reasons. Some reasons include trade, travel, hunting, and fishing. Although every reason is significant in different ways some have a greater significance than others, and some make a bigger contribution to different countries economies and culture. I believe ships have greatly contributed to different cultures and economies by their use in trade and travel. Trade is an important factor to different cultures and economies because trade allows people to spread their culture all around the world by cultural significant goods and also allows them to sell many types of goods which would help boosts their economy. According to FOUND: Ancient Greek Trading Ships, “Sediment at the bottom of the amphora contained the bones of freshwater catfish, olive pits, and resin”. This quotation shows that Ancient Greek trading ships used trade to spread their culture all around the world by trading goods important to cultural expression. Showing the way they use the amphora is an important aspect when learning their culture, and trade was...
