...Shaan Ansari Anthropology 101 UIN: 672171442 Alex 3:00-3:50 The Cultural Emergence of Jersey Shore Though the majority of the world’s population is grateful for the prominent facets of a sustainable bionetwork [water, food, and air] which maintain the indispensable requirements of life; they disregard one which adds pure substantial diversity, culture. Culture is the complete anthology of learned human behavior patterns. The idea of culture is universal across the globe and has been utilized and educated through a variety of traditions. Every concept of culture varies, which establishes the diversified nature. Along with diversity, lies the indisputable trait of versatility. A single host or individual has the ability to encompass more than one culture at a time. In the world today, culture most commonly sprouts from heritage and where one is born. It is thus carried on through the specific groups, generation after generation. Examples of prominent and active cultures are Chinese, Indian, Spanish, and Italian. Specifically focusing on the Italian culture of this era emerged a reality TV series known as Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore taints this culture through stereotypical extremities and contrived situational settings. It is evident the “culture” promoted within Jersey Shore is solely focused on irrelevant activities towards the genuine Italian culture. The cast of the show embraces a set of norms and values which are indubitably barbaric in relation to a universal lifestyle...

...After years of watching pointless television series and amateur movies that were not even worth the movies ticket price, I settled on the popular T.V series “Jersey Shore”. I understand that this is one of the ridiculous shows that have ever been aired but for some reason, I became very interested in it. The plot of this show is to capture the supposedly exciting lives of 8 members of the sun tan and hair gel squad, also known as the people of New Jersey. The camera crews captured countless fights, whether it is between the women of the show or because of guy troubles. I was engrossed in this series because of how insightful the background stories were. The people still fought and drank to the extreme but they were still capable of showing...

...ordinary people and catapult them to celebrity status. Jersey Shore is a reality based television show that is currently in its fifth season. This show has expanded into a clothing line and its cast has become so infamous that even if you do not watch the show you still know their names. Additionally, it has created a speech code for its dedicated viewers, such as the acronym GTL (gym, tan, laundry). Because this show has been and continues to be a success it brings some questions to mind. Why did people decide to watch the show? Why did they keep watching? What do they find so entertaining? And why has it become so popular? Through the concepts of Reception Theory it is shown that the show’s popularity is due to how the audience interprets the show’s media texts as entertainment. Real states that reception theory helps us “explore media culture by analyzing the complex, varied and intriguing ways that readers decode and interpret the texts of media” (pg. 94). What this means to me is that people can watch the same show for different reasons. One person can find it humorous while another can find the content relatable to their own life. In my opinion, reality based television shows have become popular because their text’s “meaning is not fixed but is multilayered (polysemic) and multireferential” (Real pg. 95). To better understand my method of research, I think a summary of the show is important. Jersey Shore has a cast of 4 girls and 4 boys and each have Italian heritage...

...Morning Beach It is early in the morning and the sky is still dim. The immured beach is quiet besides a flock of seagulls pecking at leftover food wrappers. The yellow, phosphorescent sunrise emerges in the distance. The warm, glowing rays greet me with a friendly hello. Miles of shimmering blue water and brown sugar sand encompass me. As I walk along blanket of sand, along the shore, my footprints show my path and are quickly washed away by the waves, turning the shore into a blank canvas. The crashing waves splash my skin feels as refreshing as an ice cold drink on a summer day. The howling wind whistles along the beach like an arriving train as I return to the main area. The rhythmically pounding waves sound peaceful. I walk to a long strip of shops to admire their exquisite commodities. Small, beachfront shops prepare for the day’s customers who will rummage through their merchandise. Key-holders set the seaside products outside their shops. Fashionable clothes and jewelry are propped in the windows, beside brightly colored seashells. I smell fresh coffee and pastries as I pass a Starbucks Coffee shop. As I continue my morning stroll, I only see joggers along the usually busy sidewalks of Clearwater Avenue. I head back to the beach. Some friends play a competitive game of Frisbee near the beach’s pier. The soft blanket of sand cushions one of the adolescents as he reaches high and then dives for the disk. I look to my left and hear the beach is now filled with...

...In general, Chapter 11 is about coasts, beaches and shores i.e. the land that meets ocean waters. The difference between a shore and a coast is that the coast is a larger zone than a shore. A sandy beach is a shore, however, the coast includes marshes, sand dunes and cliffs inland of the beach. Coasts also have sandbars and troughs right of the shore. Coast, shores and beaches are active zones that are eroded by waves, winds and tectonic plate movement. Coasts are active places and the location of a coast depends on global tectonic activity and the volume of water in the ocean. The shape of a coast is developed by many processes such as uplift and subsidence, the wearing down of land by erosion, and the redistribution of material by sediment...

...Reymar L. Canania Local Communities (GE 100-01) Brother Isaiah Walker February 10, 2015 Irish and I went to Hukilau beach here in Laie, just next to Temple beach for the Local Community class for “Bleach Cleanup and Research Project.” Our goals were to cleanup the beach shore and even the nearby area and pick our favorite one. Upon cleaning the beach by picking-up garbage in the shore and putting it to a garbage bag (Images 1.0), we found some interesting garbage that is lying on the sand of Hukilau beach. Images 1.0 On the top from the left is a piece of fine plastic net that looks like a protective net to cover a brand new basketball. Next is a piece of green net that is obviously used for fishing, and lastly is a deteriorating kind of rope that is tied together. Among the three, the blue plastic net is our favorite. We searched in the Internet and found out that the blue plastic net is actually a short fishing landing net, sold by a seller online in Walmart called shop411.com owned and operated by IAC Search & Media, Inc., and has headquarters in Oakland, California, with offices throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. In the other hand, although the short fishing landing net is a helpful tool in fishing, people who owns it should be responsible in using it, especially on disposing it if not usable anymore. We have witness in our own eyes on how this piece of garbage can be a threat to our safety not only here in Laie, but also to all...

...tourist cake may be difficult to reconcile. Sea levels are rising. Maximum wave heights have been steadily increasing during the last decade, from 8.22 metres in 1991 to 9.92 metres on 9th November 2001. The best defence against coastal erosion and rising sea levels is the humble beach, cheaper than traditional hard defences in both the short and long term. But the creation of sustainable artificial beaches is more complex than simply dumping sand or shingle on the shore and the organisation responsible for these operations estimates annual sand loss at 10% of the amount spread. Causes: Alarmingly, the Catalan supply appears to be running out. Rivers such as the Llobregat and Besòs now barely reach the sea due to water abstraction. Where they do, damming, reforestation and increasing urbanisation upstream all act to reduce sediment input. Marina, breakwater and sea wall developments prevent the natural erosion of the coast and inhibit the transport of sediments in a southerly and south-westerly direction along the shore by coastal currents. The result is the same. The supply of sand is...

...Exclusive Coast Around the world, along our ocean’s coast, there are miles and miles of nature’s beautiful beaches. These alluring shores with sublime weather become prime real estate for those who can afford it. When someone buys the property they expect to own the land that comes with it: so a person that buys a beach house expects that their backyard, the beach, is their private land. However, most people feel that all beaches should be public for tourism and personal satisfaction. That one cannot own “nature.” Despite the many heated debates over this exigence and the many laws that have been passed, individuals should come to the conclusion that the economic and recreational needs of the general public are greater than the needs of a select few. Today in the United States, there is a total of 88,633 miles of shoreline, give or take a few miles (United States 225). The US government census defines shoreline as, “the term used to describe a more detailed measure of the seacoast” (225). They included islands and territories, as well as bays, rivers and lakes in their measurement. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states that, “in 2010, 123.3 million people, or 39 percent of the nation’s population lived in counties directly on the shoreline” (National Ocean Service). They also expect that population to increase by 10 million people by 2020. With so many people in such a small area, it does not make sense for people to be blocking off their land. When...

...could be. One of the most unforgettable things was getting to watch the sunset on the beach. When we arrived to Cancun, Mexico I couldn’t believe how breathtakingly beautiful it was. As we drove to our hotel I could hear the proud mariachi band playing their captivating music. The smells of the authentic Mexican dishes that filled the air could make anyone’s mouth water. In the distance I could see the endless blue ocean slowly getting bigger as we approached it. (Then we turned into the driveway of a beautiful castle like hotel where we would be staying at during our vacation.) ??? Later that evening we decided to take a trip down to the beach. As I got out of the car I could hear the waves clashing against one another as they reached shore. I could smell the comforting salt water in air. The crystal clear water sparkled as the sun shined upon it. After spending the whole day on the beach, we laid a blanket on the warm sand and watched as the sun disappeared into the water. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever witnessed. The sky slowly went from a warm orange to a cool purple. We had a delicious picnic and then went back to the hotel to have a goodnight sleep. Cancun is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. I got to experience the culture and see some of the most extravagant beaches in the world. The wonderful time I had here I will always remember. I hope to one day revisit Cancun and explore more of their wonderful...
