The wealth effects associated with conglomerates have been controversially discussed in scholarly journals ever since the seminal papers of Lang and Stulz (1994) and Berger and Ofek (1995) suggested that diversification reduces shareholder value. Both find that conglomerates are attributed with a lower market value than a portfolio of comparable focussed firms operating in the same businesses as the conglomerate. This finding seemed to suggest the hypothesis of a “diversification discount”. In line with this Scharfstein and Stein (2000) postulate "it has become almost axiomatic among researchers in finance and strategy that a policy of corporate diversification is typically value reducing.” Yet, subsequently financial scholars have challenged this dogma of a diversification discount. They did so with respect to the method used (Mansi and Reeb (2002); Glaser and Müller (2010)) and the causal interference (Graham et al. (2002); Campa and Kedia (2002); Villalonga (2004)). Taking these latest developments into account, the empirical evidence on the value effects of corporate diversification is mixed. Abstract The subject of electrical hazards analysis has been recognized by a small segment of the electrical industry for many years. The petrochemical industry and many government institutions have performed research on this subject for over twenty years. For the most part however, the electrical industry, at least at the user level, has largely ignored the subject, essentially reacting to catastrophic accidents, rather than proactively trying to predict and prevent them. Recent changes in consensus standards, along with a better general understanding of the seriousness of electrical hazards have resulted in a renewal of interest in the subject. As the awareness of electrical hazards increase many are puzzled by phrases like; “Limited”, “Restricted”, and “Prohibited Approach Boundary”, and “Flash Protection Boundary”. Originally, tesla coils were designed to broadcast electricity and signals wirelessly, however, several engineering and monetary setbacks prevented the tesla coil from becoming the popular mode of energy transfer, and a power distribution method architecture relying on use of power grid lines (wires/cables) became the prevailing and accepted method. Now, tesla coils are primarily used for short-range wireless power transmission, for lighting up some types of lights, and for presentation/entertainment purposes. The operating principle behind a tesla coil is somewhat simple. Energy is sent to charge up a capacitor or set of capacitors. At a certain point, the capacitors are forced to discharge into the primary coil. When the energy that is stored in the capacitors is sent through the primary coil, a large amount of energy is induced “sent” into the secondary coil alternating current is basically just electricity that changes voltage. When a capacitor is fires the voltage changes from essentially zero to something really large in a very short time. Since there are more turns in the secondary coil, the induced energy has a higher voltage, but a lower current than in the primary coil. The capacitors recharge and start this cycle again. The capacitance of the capacitor and the inductance of the primary coil determine how quickly this cycle occurs per second and is measured in units of frequency called hertz. Instead of RF signals, light from a laser torch is used as the carrier in the circuit. The laser torch can transmit light up to a distance of about 500 meters. The phototransistor of the receiver must be accurately oriented towards the laser beam from the torch. If there is any obstruction in the path of the laser beam, no sound will be heard from the receiver. The transmitter circuit comprises condenser microphone transistor amplifier BC548 (T1) followed by an opamp stage built around µA741 (IC1). The gain of the op-amp can be controlled with the help of 1-mega-ohm pot meter VR1. The AF output from IC1 is coupled to the base of transistor BD139 (T2), which, in turn, modulates the laser beam. The transmitter uses 9V power supply. However, the 3-volt laser torch (after removal of its battery) can be directly connected to the circuit—with the body of the torch connected to the emitter of BD139 and the spring-loaded lead protruding from inside the torch to circuit ground. The receiver circuit uses an npn phototransistor as the light sensor that is followed by a two-stage transistor preamplifier and LM386-based audio power amplifier.
